Dinara you played disgustingly bad. But all credit to Domi she played incredible tennis. Dinara was just making unforced error after unforced error, it was really bad. Oh well

I'm watching it now, 6-7 6-1 5-1. that's what you get for doing two things at once

It's was great match! Safina just went off the rails, was too many errors. Dominika's consistency was the key :)
Overall a fantastic match for the final.

Dinara down 16 15, and playing that poorly. Then she had 2 break points for 55, but Domi didn't choke it all away

First thing i noticed that Dinara hits 45 forehand unforced errors :haha:

I'm watching as well and they're pretending like it's live. I hate it when they do that. :o

But exciting match :D

I thought it was live on T.V here, oh well. Good to know Safina still put in an effort to fight back and a GREAT win for Domi. She never won a set over Safina before so good that's she could get a win.

Safina has really struggled agaisnt the counter punchers here, both Su Wei and Domi. Clearly she needs to add more dimensions to her game, get some confidence and fix that forehand DTL! Domi played well though, running as much as usual and pounding Safina's forehand. Hit a lot of great backhand winners. Goodish match (hope it gets better)

i don't think safina will keep up her 2008 form in '09. great win for domi, makes the final intresting as i think marat should win his singles so it will come down to the doubles hopefuly.

Me too. :( I guess it was much too convenient for them to start after the ABC News and 7 30 Report. At least we got to see it at all though. it's nice to be able to watch tennis at night again.

I liked what I saw of Cibulkova:) She could smile a bit more though, take a leaf out of Lisicki's book. I didn't see her smile once in this match and it's 6-7 6-1 *5-4 30-15

Safina at her worst. Cibulkova did what she had to do to win.

Cibulkova is 7-0 this week if you count a W/O might need to be 8-0 to win, great form.

Very exciting at the end of the match, Dinara triedto make a large comeback like she has done so much in the past and it seemed like she would pull it off having break points for 5 all. But Dominika was so tough and really has the mental abilility to go very far in tennis.

This exho tells NOTHING about Safina's form. It's hillarious and frustrating that so many posters here seem to believe exhibitions mean something.

you have got to be kiddng me. i really thought they had this. only an exho, but it would have been a boost for dinara going into the aussie.

congrats to cibulkova.

Exho or not exho same thing... probably both players treat it similar way so great win for Dominika. However I never stop wondering how people can judge players form after couple matches (sometimes even one).

Good match Cibulkova did really well but it would of been a different story had Safina been able to hit a forehand in from the 2nd set and 3rd set until 5-1 down in the 3rd.

and her form in Mosocw and YEC? I guess that doesn't mean anything either right?

and it's not like this is any other EXHO. Players are playing for their country and don't want to let each other down. Remember how emotional Serena was against Safarova last year? I'd say that was a pretty good indication of her form going into the aussie open!

Safina was tired in the end of 2008 -- plain and simple. The girl went W-RU-RU-3r-W-W-RU-SF-W-QF-SF before YEC, of course she couldn't keep that form forever. But it doesn't mean she's gonna suck big time now.

And no, Hopman Cup has nothing to do with representing your country. It's a pure exho -- see 2007 edition. Only has (or have?)-beens like Hewitt and Hrbaty take it seriously because they know perfectly they're done on the Tour level.

Yes and no.
Yes because he's also a has-been, although he's still capable to produce one impressive result per season (Wimbledon SF for instance).
No because he never cared about Hopman Cup. Even in his best years.

You said that they only cared if they were has-beens. This is irrelevant then.

I think you can tell players took it seriously by the way they played. Just about every player was annoyed if they were not playing well or missed a shot. Maybe they subconciously didn't want to win as much as say a normal tour match but no one wants to lose and they all wanted to win there matches and the hopman cup. Plus most play it as a warm up for the Australian open cause they get lots of matches so they feel they need to get competitive after the break again.

It was a super match for Dominika after saving 2 bp to serve out the match! She finally beat Dinara!! Slovakia won the Hopman Cup for 3rd time. Last time was 2005 with Hrbaty & Hantuchova! 1st title for Dominika!!
