pretty good match, both ended up with a +6 winner to error ratio. huge difference was venus's serve, its a huge weapon whereas chaks can be a major problem. venus said after the match that anna played well, and there was full respect from venus out there on taking on anna (prehaps even more than against jj as she seemed like she didn't respect or rate jj whatso ever). anna hit 2 just beautiful slice and one brilliant half volley drop shot winner. venus was very good at net.

now let me just go over the chak serve, ok i can deal with her going for 100% on every 1st serve because she hit 5 aces, but its so counterproductive as its low % and her second serve has just no spin on it at all. infact i'd go as far as to say chaks 2nd serve is one of the worst in the top 20. off the ground anna and venus were very evenly matched but chak was always behind because of the 2nd serve.

as for venus fans that will claim venus played bad, shut up i've seen venus play a million times worse than that and venus returned very well today and also served very well.

She played well at times and missed easy shots at other times. But I don't think she was overly negative.

on this form venus should have no problem making the qtrs at the oz, then its down to fight and will but she looks very serious about it this year.

im happy that chak will do well at hobart and given a good draw could go deep at the oz open.

Anyway, they are showing this match on Pay TV now. Anna's backhand looks different, not sure if I like it but hey..if it helps her play better fine. She does seem to be hitting the ball cleaner and Venus is playing good as well.

Tell me a time when Venus has played a flawless match PLEASE. This is the same Venus who busted on the scene eons ago. In a 2 setter she either has a brilliant 1st set and subpar 2nd or vice verse--- and for a 3 setter a brilliant 1st set, fade away for the 2nd and fight her ass off in the third. Why can't her fans just accept this? As long as she wins the match, nitpicking especially at this age is pointless the way I see it

You'd be hard pressed to find any match where Venus had fewer than 20ue's and did not win. Maybe Wimbledon where they don't count ue's the same as other tourneys... She's unbeatable w/20 or less ue's

This match does NOT disprove Infiniti's statement. Venus was sucking up a storm in the first set. Playing too quickly not taking time to prepare for her serve. She went down 1-4 and only then managed to pick it up.

I agree, Infiniti is 100% correct. Even when there's an easy scoreline it's never all easy for Vee.

You can count the number of matches on one hand where she hasn't had a glitch at some point. Otherwise Venus would have A LOT more 61 61 beatdowns to her name from her glory years.

Nonetheless, she has had some impressive matches, playing consistently good tennis against top players. I named some matches where I thought that was the case.

Perfect tennis for a whole match--not Venus Williams. But that would apply to almost any player. In the Capriati match at the U.S. Open, she regrouped quickly, refocused and then blew her off the court. The same player who had won two slams that year and in fact ended up being the POY. She only let her get six games!

Damnit, so annoyed I missed this match - was supposed to have the morning off but had to work at the last minute, grr! I'll echo earlier sentiments requesting a copy/youtubing/etc of this match, if anyone happens to have recorded it in some form, would love to get the chance to watch it.

Anyway - I'm really glad to see that this was a competetive match, and that Anna didn't just succumb to Venus with a whimper. I was realistically expecting a Venus victory (although part of me of course hoped for an upset!) but fearing an absolute slaughter if Anna's head wasn't roughly in the correct place. From the stats, it would seem to indicate that both played quite well, and for that I am glad. As an Anna fanboy, it is nice to see her looking hungrier and at least marginally happier.

Congrats to Vee and her fans, a win over Anna may not represent that much, but in general I have the feeling that Venus will be a greater force this year, and not just for brief flashes at her usual haunts like Wimbledon.

because she hasnt played them in a while
and
Kuznetsova and Chakvetadze have both
won their last previous encounters with Venus...
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME THEY PLAYED VENUS! If our girl plays the way she's capable of playing, nobody, AND THE ROCK MEANS NOBODY, can beat her. IF YA SMELL..... :hehehe:

Venus was hitting Kick 1st & 2cd serves in the ad at times and hitting them well for the most part. But that forehand return in the 2cd set at i think 0-15 was amazing.

see post 57 and 59 and throw in thumping of Justine in 2003 Aus Open semi-finals 6-3, 6-3 on hardcourt.

Fed Cup 2005: 6-1, 6-2 rout of Dementieva on clay.

I should have added recently. Please don't talk to me about her matchs in 2003 or 2005:lol::lol:
