2006 USO QF: Henin-Hardenne def. Davenport 6-4, 6-4. Seems like a pretty straightforward match, simple win for Justine based on the scoreline. And obviously she did own Lindsay in the second half of the American's career. But Lindsay was playing better than Justine for much of the first set until she lost a very long game on her service at 3-3, after being ahead 30-0. At the start of the second set, Justine was treated for a shoulder/back problem and Lindsay took momentum until 3-1, 15-0. That's when Justine stepped up her level another two notches. But not without Lindsay fighting and still playing great until the very last point.

Overall, the quality of this match was just ridiculous. The length of the games and rallies within this match, considering the pace and depth of shot by both women, was insane. It was just pure ball-striking from both Henin and Davenport. Even the Belgian, who is known a little bit for some flaky shots and mishits, was smacking the ball absolutely cleanly. Right in the center of the strings every damn time. The sound of this match was so good because they were consistently crushing the ball in the sweet spot of the racquet every point. Justine was also mixing up the play with clever, well-timed dropshots. Lindsay was hitting her first serve remarkably well, and it took Justine's anticipation on return to be able to break the American's serve three times in total.

For sure the Henin/V.Williams semifinal at the US Open of 2007 was a better match. More dramatic, tense, athletic, varied, with fantastic volleys at the net. But I think this Henin/Davenport match also deserves some more credit and recognition from fans and analysts, especially considering it was near the end of both their careers!

Agreed. Great match.

On a side note, JuJu got beaten by the same scoreline in the final. Just sayin. :)

I never saw that whole match, actually. I'll have to look for it one day, youtube or DVD or whatever.

Eh... seriously? I was really disappointed by this match and by Lindsay in particular. But it was 2 years ago so I dont remember it exactly.

Nah, I'm glad this one is forgotten. Justine was just on her own level and Lindsay was unhappy/injured and generally in a bad place in her tennis. She kept it as close as she could but it was never really competitive. 2006 was just a horrible year.

I agree that 2006 was a horrible year. Perhaps the worst in tennis history? Certainly the worst year on the WTA this decade!
