Why must Rezai go for everything all the time? She needs to be more controlled.

great match from lena;) but rezai just tried to blast the ball.
i like how rezai poured the water on herself and smiled at the camera.
i think this is the best elena has done pre AO so hopefully a sign of big things in melbourne:bounce:

She's been solid all week. Hope she takes the title, it would be a good warm up for AO.

Fair dues to Elena. The only player thus far this season to go out and stamp their authority and owning a player like they should. Not a fan but all credit to her. She hit some great shots. Had answers for everything Aravane tried.

GJ Elena :yeah:

Scrappy match, although any match with Caravane and a top notch baseline grinder is bound to be.

Caravane wasn't firing at all, but even in the other two matches I saw of her this week she wasn't playing all that well, and Dementieva is about as bad a match-up as it gets for her. Caravane's game is so risky that she can't even bank on rally shots hit down the centre of the court. She's not as slow as people make out though. Yes, she has terrible agility and is always susceptible to routine wrong-footers but if she's moving L-R-L-R she's fairly mobile.

It's FW which kills her in these type of matches. It's so primitive that she can barely stay in 5-6 shot rallies against random top 100 players, so how is she supposed to against Dementieva? There's no way she can be anything but an extreme BB when we look at it from this aspect.

Lena hit more outright winners IIRC. The timing on her BH is much better than it was earlier on this week. She's spinning her 1st serve in about 80% still, unfortunately. That will hurt her against the elite. A match against an extreme BB in Rezai was never going to produce a vintage performance, so I think it went as well as possible.

Elena looking good in Auckland... she looks fantastic physically and so focused - with the right draw, an AO title is not out of the question, especially with question marks hanging over the form/fitness of other top players.

Rezai fought hard all match and it really seemed like she was trying her best, Elena's defence was just way too good for Aravane to consistently trouble her. I hadn't seen Rezai play in about a year, her game is still limited (great fun to watch when "on") but I had totally forgotten how gorgeous she is. Am I alone in thinking this? Sometimes she's not in the best physical shape for a pro athlete, but her face is really striking and her body seems to have toned up.

I think it was a great - professional - performance from Elena. She just showed how it should be done.

And it's her best season opener ever :hearts:

Walk in the park for elena, she should win this title to up her confidence right before Melbourne, there´s no one close to her level here. She also should get at least past the 4th round at AO this year. That´s just a bad mark on her career that needs to be wiped. Hoping for a good draw and at least a quarterfinal/semifinal appearance.

The next tournie she plays is sydney sweetie... Not: the other one, just so you know :p

Anyway, ranking wise this is a great strategical movement from elena if she´s fully fit. She could hit the top3 if she wins here, does ok in sydney and finally goes past the 4th round at the you know where. (not gonna say it)

Awh well, i´m not expecting anything from elena during the australian tour. She sucks here, we all know it. :o

i said this when the entry list came out, that this was lena d to lose. kittyking tried to tell me there was depth in the draw but really lena d's on a different level to any other player in the draw, much like davenport was last year.

lena d is getting much better at winning tournaments she really should win.

Well its not a huge even thats for sure, it wont go down as a major accomplishment in Lenas career but it still a tournment that has to be won and Lenas not won it yet.

The players are all there to try win and although Lena is by far the best there was in that field, there were still names that could make an upset, especially with the Lena of old, this one is playing as one would expect the world number 4 to.

Vesnina could be tricky, however she hardly beat a British wench which is not a good sign for her, but then again its another match tomorrow so we wait and see.

Lena will get teated in Sydney and Melbourne.
This is a good start up for her. This might be her best year ever. Tough to top a Gold medal, but who knows.
No Justine, who knows about Sharapova.
