Final women’s wildcards announced
Medibank International Friday 9 January 2009

New South Wales teenager Emelyn Starr and Melbourne-based Jarmila Gajdosova have been awarded wildcards into the women’s draw at the Medibank International Sydney.

Originally the wildcards had been awarded to Samantha Stosur and Casey Dellacqua but Australia’s two leading players have now secured places in the main draw of their own accord as the next two direct acceptances.

Starr, 19, is Tamworth-based but trains with Sandon Stolle through the Australian Institute of Sport Pro Tour Program. During 2008 she was a quarter finalist at events in Mildura, Vigo and Rockhampton and recently reached a career high ranking of 413.

She also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open wildcard play off in December losing to eventual champion Jelena Dokic.

Gajdosova is ranked No. 98 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and during the 2008 season she reached the semi finals of the Japan Open and won tournaments in Korea, Taipei, Kawana and Traralgon. She was also a finalist at Rockhampton.

“I am very happy and would like to thank the tournament director and Tennis Australia for the opportunity to test my skills against the top players, I will try not to disappoint people. This is the perfect preparation for the Australian Open,” Gajdosova said.

“Having lived in Sydney for four years this is just like coming home and it will be great to play in front of all of my friends.”

“It’s great for Sam and Casey to see them enter the main draw on the strength of their world ranking,” Tournament Director Craig Watson said.

“It has allowed us to be in a position to award the wildcards to Jarmila, who is so passionate about playing for Australia and Emelyn, who is making a breakthrough on the women’s tour.”

The men’s main draw wildcards were awarded to Novak Djokovic, Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione.

The draw must not be very good this year if Sam and Casey can get in directly?

But good news anyway, Starr will have A LOT of trouble though!

Starr? :o She's a great kid, but boy she's gonna find it tough. Great experience for her though.

So Starr is getting a MD WC for the AO as well? Doesn't this participation in Sydney prevent her from playing AO Qualies?

She isn't going to make it past the first round...

I doubt she will get a wild card for the Aussie

^ No she can still make AO qualies. Unless she reaches the Sydney QFs which we all know is not going to happen.
