Hope Mel can make the MD and that Georgie gets into Q.

Its weird in the past players ranked 230 have got into quallies here. Now Georgie at 217 is still a few places out.

Sad to see the defending champion have to pull out, but it means Mel's in! :worship:

Of course, it's a double-edged sword, since she'd have been likely to win matches in qualifying and will now need to win a main draw match to avoid her ranking taking a hit, but it's an important step for GB Tennis to get two girls into a slam as main draw DAs for, I'm pretty sure, the first time this century. :)

Good luck Melanie. :)

As you say, two GB Girls in the Main Draw of the Australian Open is brilliant for British Tennis and I am sure someone will know when this last happened.

Good luck Melanie. :)

As you say, two GB Girls in the Main Draw of the Australian Open is brilliant for British Tennis and I am sure someone will know when this last happened.

The last time there were two GB women in the main draw of a slam without needing WCs was at the 1993 US Open - Jo Durie and Clare Wood. That was 61 slams ago!

I think the last time there were two GB women in the main draw of the AO was earlier the same year, when Monique Javer was a DA and Clare Wood qualified.

Its great to see :D though none of them have great draws. Anne and Bally are the only two that I could see taking wins, Mel has a very tough task in Bartoli and I dont think Katie has the game for an on-form Niculscu. If Anne is playing decent and Anna is playing like she has done for the last 6 months basically then I think she can get through. Bally has it tough but shes been impressive in the last four sets shes played, dropping just four games, so who knows. Good Luck to all of them though

Mel South and Mario Bartoli, how many times have i seen that draw. Mel South has put up a good fight before now against Marion and if Bartoli is still injured then Mel could stand a decent chance but the odds are against her. I have a bad feeling that Chakvetadze will refuse to be eliminated out of round 1 and play like she did about a year ago but she hasnt shown any potential in the last couple of months and i think Keothavong has the best draw out of the 4 Brits. Niculescu is such a hungry player, i saw her play Chakvetadze a while ago in the indoor series last year. She won in 3. If she is on top form i dont think Katie will be as consistent enough to beat her and i think Katie has the toughest draw. Bally will come out strong and i can see her winning her match but Groenfeld played so well at the US but since then there are no outstanding results. I think it will be an even affair because both players are alike in ways.

Laura Robson out of first couple of months of tour due to stomach tear.

Go Brits !! :D

jake270392
Jan 18th, 2009, 03:11 PM
Yes I think if Anne can play consistantly and stay focused, then shes got a good chance of winning, Chakvetdaze is off and on, she can play amazing tennis but that depends on if she doesnt throw a tantrum.
With the other Brits, their all the under dogs, which could be a good thing as they dont have anything to lose and the players their playing, are all beatable. So GL to all Brits.

Brits bow out of Australian Open

Mel South, Katie O’Brien and Anne Keothavong battled hard but lost in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday.

South, the British number two, was playing in her first Grand Slam main draw event without the aid of a wildcard.
The 22 year old has risen to a career high of 102 in the world courtesy of a run of good results towards the end of 2008 which was enough to see her secure a place amongst the elite in Australia.

South never looked overawed by her opponent, Marion Bartoli of France, despite the difference in ranking and led the second set 4-1 before a run of five straight games helped the 16th seed and Wimbledon finalist in 2007 to a 6-2 6-4 victory.

Despite the defeat, South still had plenty to be positive about: “I’m disappointed to have lost particularly having played her a couple of times before and knowing I could beat her.

“I played a really bad game at 4-1 in the second set which was frustrating but getting into the main draw on my ranking has been a good start to the year for me.”

South is already looking ahead to next month’s Fed Cup competition and beyond, relishing the opportunity to get back on court. “It’s been a good tournament, not just for me but for all the British girls.

“I’ve got plenty of confidence making main draw and just need a couple of wins and should crack the top 100. I’ve been working hard recently with my coach Simon Walsh and it’s nice when that hard work pays off.”

Speaking after the match Head Coach of Women’s Tennis Nigel Sears said:

Mel showed great spirit to put the first set behind her and get to 4-1 in the second. It’s no disgrace to lose to someone like Bartoli.”
