Venus played very well. There was no pressure on her tonight so she was just swinging freely and it worked

Don't worry though, it was just an exo. It's only the GS's that matter right?

For some reasons Venus always plays EXTREMELY well in Hong Kong, so it's not a surprise she wins the match that easily.

She really dominated the match:eek:, hopefully she can play that well in AO too.

And Jankovic is just pretty blah today:o. Doesn't seem to be happy with herself as well.

Jelena's forehand was awful. She was trying to be aggressive on that side and made way too many errors.
She also seemed to have lost speed with the increased bulk (like Justine early 04). Except she can't hit hard enough to compensate.

Venus's serve was incredible. Her ground game was good, but not fantastic.

OOOOH this is good news even though it's only an Exho and Venus did beat Maria here last year and still... well let me know say it.

Anyway it's great news considering I was bummed about Caro losing to Vesnina (but I also like her) and Ana to MoMo. While I'm happy to see MoMo winning I so wanted this for Ana

I won't knock JJ's off season preparation as we don't know how much more she will fight during matches that really matters on the WTA calender

Why are people making such a big issue out of it?

Unlike some previous occaisons, Venus just decided to play decently , and look what happened. It was expected.

When Venus plays decent tennis by her standards, she beats mediocre and lesser talented players like Jankovic all the time, nothing unexpected.

Great win Venus. Exhibition or not, its not players aren't trying. There is a difference between this kind of exhibition and a charity one.

I'm sure Jelena would have tried harder had it been a real tour match, but Venus played well and served well and those are all great signs. Hopefully this will carry over to the Australian Open.

Venus was really up for this match and JJ should be embarrassed by her performance. She fought hard in the first set and had many break points in one game on Venus's serve but could not break. In the second set Venus was starting to lose concentration and JJ could not take advantage. After Venus got a lucky net cord JJ just seemed to resign herself to defeat and did not try for the last few games. The fans who paid for this should get their money back.

As far as I know [and I may be wrong] the Hong Kong exhibition is the only pre AO warm up for Jelena and Venus, so I don't understand why BOTH players wouldn't give it their all and play with all seriousness to get as much match fit as they can.

In that respect, I'm puzzelled as to why Jelena didn't give a better account for herself unless Venus was too much for her? Unless Jelena was trying out her improved physique and forehand against a top player and failed. I didn't watch the match so I hope someone can clear that one up for me.

Congrats Venus, I hope you can continue to maintain/improve and really bring that form to the Australian Open.

As for Jelena, I hope she improves too. I really do.

AcesHigh
Jan 8th, 2009, 12:06 PM
Yes, it was an exhibition. However, it's not like it's a charity exho and you dont lose to your rival 2 and 2 :help: If anything, JJ either has no pride or she was completely outclassed today.

Does this mean Venus will win AO? Of course not.. but it's a good sign nevertheless. People point to last year, but Venus should own Sharapova if she's playing well...it's just such a bad matchup. It's the opposite for JJ.

Anyway...i'm happy :)

So are you telling me than NONE of JJ's fans are Venus haters??? It work both ways, that is some Venus fans JJ and some JJ fans hate Venus and of course there are some that loves both.

Half of them posted in here not only to congratulate Venus but with an obvious alternative motive. Did you read the thread title and opening post? It was made to purposely taunt JJ fans. :)

Half of who? Yes I saw the original post and I did not agree with the knocking of JJ's preparation for 2009 to boost Venus win, but not to far behind there were the immediate "It's only and exho" rants etc. Taunting JJ and her fans is wrong but so is, people jumping in the thread to attacking Venus fans. None of it is right. And to me if you are going to say basically negative things to defend then you are no better than they person you claim is wrong.

No, of course not. There must be an odd Venus hater among Jankobitches. What I meant is that taht I didn't see any JJ fans disputing today's Venus' brutal murder of JJ. Venus was million times nbetter today, but it's also not fair to belittle JJ's previous wins on account of today's loss.

Anyway...i'm happy :)true dat.

No one was really attacking Venus fans or Venus herself. They just said that the match didn't matter as much because it was an exo. What's so negative about that? And besides, most people who said it's only an exo congratulated Venus in the same post, so that argument is moot. I didn't really see any positive posts from Venus fans hoping that JJ would pick up her game for the coming season or anything.

Fans are passionate about their faves so this is bound to happen. This match was an exho but it takes nothing away from the fact that it was a dominant win over JJ who has a very good record over Vee. Its also great for Venus fans to see the great results as we have gone through many lows and highs supporting her and to see her doing so well consecutively is just a joy.

Also, people are saying that Venus did the same thing last year to Maria - implying that this does not bode well for her in Australia.

Venus actually played well in Australia last year. It's just that in the match against Ana she came out with this weird thick wrap on her leg & her movement was suspect. I would love Venus to play like she did last year but without the injury. I think she has way more confidence now.

HALF THE VENUS FANS THAT POSTED??? LOL I read the whole thread and apart from the initial post the negative responses started at #4,5,6 all reminding Vee's fan and possibly the original poster that is was a mere exhibition, which was totally uncalled for, but totally expected. Venus fans then came to her defense and the war of words (for lack of better words began).

And do you really think that saying congrats Venus but remember this is only and Exho is positive? Why not just congrats and move on?? Plus I did mention in my original post that no one should knock JJ's 2009 preparation based on this loss. Also it seems to me that JJ fans want Venus fans to be all positive, yet they don't want to show the same respect to Venus fans. You will never ever agree once you are defending faves but I honestly think that people cannot expect from others what they themselves don't want to give.

To be honest (as much as I normally like Doni's posts), putting number 1 in quotations and digging at her off court training in the OP was always going to start arguments. If it was a simple "congrats Venus or hug JJ" then I doubt anyone would be saying "it's just an exho" etc.

I was afraid of that... :(

Anyhow, congrats, Venus!

Venus seems to bring it in Xiang Gang! I wonder how much they pay for the winner! :tape: Venus + money = PeakVenus (look at Wimbledon)

Bartoli, Mauresmo and Azarenka aren't decent players?

Anyway, I'm a big JJ fan, and I like Venus. There really aren't many/any JJ fans who are big Venus haters.

 But the fact is that it was an exo. There is basically no pressure on them, and of course that will greatly advantage the player who likes to go for their shots. Venus did win fare and square, but she has to beat JJ in a real WTA match with that score before it really means anything.

I watched live. :) So disappointed that it wasn't a three-setter, I want my money back. :tape:

- Venus actually had 2 DF's not one. The stats were wrong there.
- She definitely had more winners than that because I don't think they counted service winners at all.
- Jelena was a step slower and her defensive shots popped well up for Venus to whack away.
- Jelena had a couple of good forehand passes but they were few and far between.
- Jelena's volley practices in the off-season don't seem to have worked and they were pretty bad overall.
- Jelena was moaning to her coach all the time.
- Venus's fastest serve should have been a 195 kmph.
- Jelena was going for way too much on her shots. Ultimately, she had 0 backhand DTL winners.
- Venus played quite well but I don't think she was at her best. But then neither was Jelena.

That's it for now.

I dont think a lot of Venus fans are JJ haters. I just think JJ is disliked by many on this board at the moment no matter who you're a fan of.

That'll probably change when she wins a slam and everyone jumps on the bandwagon

I liked the "number one" in the title!
But Jelena always plays well at slams, so it´s not that alarming... but I think she´s praying not to end in Venus quarter!

Williams, who trails Jankovic 4-5 in head-to-heads on the WTA Tour, broke again in the third game of the second set and went on to seal the match with the help of another break.

"I had a good start," said Williams, who beat Jankovic in their last meeting at the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships.

"I think it put some pressure on her. I also wasn't giving her the errors I usually give to her, lots of errors."

The world number six said she had a "great feeling" about the upcoming season and was going to use the knowledge she had gleaned from her last two tournaments in 2008, both of which she won.

Williams, looking to win her first Australian Open title, said she was not surprised to be off to such a strong start against a powerful opponent.

"I've always been a good player off the jump. That's always been the way I've played throughout my career," she said.

Jankovic said she had found her first singles match of the season tough.

"It was very hard to get into the match. I felt very slow on the court and didn't really get my rhythm out there," she said.

"But it's the first match of the season so I can't expect myself to play the best tennis, which is normal, so I look forward to playing as many matches as possible and trying to get in form because I haven't played a match for two months."

Great read!

I am so excited about Venus! If what she has learned from the last two tournaments is what we P-RAY she has learned then 2009 looks to be a great season.

Solid win. But it sounds like Jankovic was trying new things w/ her forehand (i.e. being more aggressive) and it was an epic fail.

And it's just and exo. I would say the same thing if Venus lost so I'll say it now. It's a more seriosu exo than some other ones but in the end the match pressures are not there and players aren't 100% dialed in. Plus Venus played great last year and then played poo poo at the AO and all the way up to Wimbledon. But great job Venus :worship:

I really dont know why some of you could be so blind...

Jelena usually have trouble
in the first couple of early matches...
check the first few matches in Australia last year...

she almost lost to dellacqua and had very close matches
against the other player and Serena played bad
and poop..Jelena is in the semis of the first GS...

and
no difference here...
Venus played as aggressive as Sharapova last year
and had similar results...
Jankovic always needs match play...

Happy New Year All,

Needless to say, I was soooooooooooo proud of Venus winning the EOY championship. And I agree, she loves playing in Hong Kong. Good on her for putting the pedal to the metal - and taking JJ out. She's continually working on cleaning up her game. I've always loved the fact that she'll readily admit that there is always room for improvement.

To date, she has really lived up to her potential; although some had written her off the last few years. Like she mentioned in recent quotes, she's been close to winning both the AO & FO if not for her 'lil sis.

I think many players are going to be besting Jelena this year. Many have and will continue to learn how to play her. She is a tough enough player, very solid and all, and reminds me some of Hingis - but over all, she can't really beat up on the power babes. They'll have her number, but she'll still beat many of the players she should beat and stay very close to the top.

We shall see.

"HAPPY NEW YEAR - VENUS" "WELCOME BACK" "WIN THE FY 09 AO" "YOU CAN DO IT"

Wow. What a nasty thread.

Yes It was an exhibition.
Yes Venus Played Well.
Yes Jelena totally gave up after being broken in the 2nd.
Yes this looks better for Venus.
Yes this means Jelena will need to work harder.

Is it that hard to be happy for a player and be respectful for the same time? That goes for the topic starter too. It pretty much invited the arguments

Yes, Venus is always play good at exho. Last year she beat the in-form super mighty (then) Australian Open Champion. So I don't want to get excited much. ;)
But... a WIN again super villain Jankovic, in 2 sets is GREAT :bounce:
Go Vee!!!
