Previous slam champs won three of four slams in 2008, and swept 2007. Do the newbies have a chance this year?

The previous champs: Serena, Venus, Ivanovic, Kuznetsova, Sharapova (and Mauresmo)

The high ranked newbies: Jankovic, Safina, Dementieva, Zvonareva, Radwanska, Petrova, Wozniacki, Pennetta

Statistically, thing are going to favor the former champs, so let's throw that out. Subjectively, I think Jankovic and Safina can beat with Serena, Venus, Ivanovic Sharapova at slams. Not would beat, but have a realistic chance. In other words, facing three straight matches against players just as good, or better, than them they have a chane of winning each match. But three in a row? Tough.

But draws do open up. Safina, for example, could play Radwanska in the QFs, Dementieva in the semis, and Ivanovic in the final. Or, given the current rankings, it could be Sharapova in the 16s, Venus in the semis, Jankovic in the semis and Serena in the final.

One of these things is NOT like the other.

I think the change of sweeping is lower than the chance to see a new slam winner. Ana and Sveta are far from their best, Pova's shoulder is questionable. So currently only Serena and Venus has a real chance to take the AO title. But their form are far from predictable, so there is also a good chance that one of the in-form newbies - Janko, Safina or Demi at the first place - will win their first.

And don't forget Paris. Janko, Safina and Demi are all good on clay while none of these champs showed good form in there for years - except Ana, who is slumping atm.
