I could tell she was pretty upset about this one but I hope she realizes how well she has done this week compared to last year. Aside from the complete collapse in the first set, we got to see some of the old Lucie in this match and I have a feeling she was a lot better in this match than she was last year which is good. Just a couple of un-timely forehands in the net and double faults cost her the match against a Top20 player. Not too bad.

Vika is so good, she hits so hard but is so consistent, good win :yeah:

Lucie is flashier, but too wild.

Lucie completely loss concentration after getting to the lead. She was playing awesome but just lost it. Started hitting it short and let Vika get some rhythm and let her back into the match.

She couldn't string two points together by the end of it and struggled to construct points and stay patient. At least there are signs of her playing better again.

too bad for lucie.:help:
from what i saw from her she looked like she was hitting the ball good.

Lucie was steamrolling Azarenka, 5-2 set point, and then the double faults crept in...

She's getting her game back though.

To me, Lucie's way more fun to watch than most of the tour, so it's good to see her starting to post results again.

i wonder what azarenka's coach told her in the first set (when down 1-5)? I didn't see the first set--so not sure what was going on....I guess Lucie just lost concentration. I like Safarova--hope she has a better year than last.

Crazy stuff. Lucie was playing her best tennis since I've seen her in early 2007. Hitting the winners all over the place as early as possible, with precision. She used her lefty advantage well and made some crazy angles. Led 5-1* (could've been a bagel actually because she had a lame service game at *3-0). Wika looked out of sorts, clearly didn't know how to deal with all what was happenning. At *5-2 Wika's coach down came to the court and told her to hit more balls down the T, straight at Lucie. Lucie had a SP which Wika saved with a fabulous CC BH winner and then Lucka served 2 DFs. I wouldn't really say that Lucka choked, it's more like Wika's got her game together and played more smart which enabled her to come back. She also took not of what her coach advised her. Lucie had one more chance in the TB leading 4-2 and had a silly miss if I remember well at 5 all which gave Wika a SP which she converted.
Wika's serve has improved as the match went on. Lucie hit more aces though (mostly down the T, but out-wide as well... those ridiculous lefty angles ). Wika had 5 MPs on Lucie's serve at *3-5. Lucie saved one of them with a ridiculous FH DTL winner... One more with a BH CC winner, another one with some crazy ball-bashing, one with a 2nd service winner. (I missed the 1st one because the livestream went down). Wika couldn't believe! I was sure Lucie would come back... or more that I was sure that Wika would choke (as she normally does when she misses a MP :tape:), and actually Lucka had a BP, but she wasted it with some silly miss again, though she did well to earn this BP hitting some crazy shots in this game again. The fact that Wika was able to close it out after the disappointment of the previous game and facing a BP down tells us a lot how she improved the mental aspect of her game. :yeah:
I'm really really encouraged by what I saw from Lucka though. She was returning better than I've ever seen her (and it's not like Wika's serve is bad). I'm expecting a better 2009 for Lucie than 2008. Ajde!

i have a new found respect for victoria azarenka... if mauresmo loses to ivanovic (which i hope she doesn't), then i think azarenka might have a real shot.

i love the way she pulled herself together, even though i wanted safarova to win!

ps. the coach's advice was for azarenka to hit the ball down the center so that safarova couldn't do her huge angled winners.

lucie
this match was yours to win, it was just a shame that her form slightly dropped and azarenka raised hers
to 5-1 in the first set, lucie played amazing.
If she had served like she did against stosur, she would have won (and won the first set 6-0)

I only saw the second set, but what I saw was enjoyable. Some of Safarova's shots were absolutely blistering and Vika hit some great winners. I like her shot making.

Promising for Safarova - she's playing much better than she was last year. I hope Vika can win her first title here, too.

what a match. Lucie played unbelievable in the first set, well the beginning of it anyways. She can surely make some damage at the Aus Open.
