I remember during the Serena vs Zheng match, one of them asked Mary Carillo "What does Jie need to do to win?"

And Mary said "Grow." :tape::tape::tape:

Oh Carillo's needlessly an arsehole most of the time. She once said 'Mauresmo played like a dog', in reference to her losing to Serena at the Aussie in '05.

One of the most inappropiate comments was from Chris bailey during the RG final in '05:

' I am not a Mary Pierce fan'

Talk about keeping it impartial:rolleyes:

^ Yeah, I remember Mary Carillo saying that she still believed Maria was the better player after Serena beat her in the 05' Aus semis.

She also called Els Callens, Els "Elderly" Callens while commentating a match a few years ago. I think she was only like 31 at the time.

Then, in 2006, this was kind of funny, but Venus had lost in the 1st round in Austrailia that year, and Serena had just lost a set to Na Li. Mary Carillo said that this is the time in the match where Larry Scott goes "Whoa Na Li" in reference of both WS going out in the 1st round.

Mary has a love hate relationship with the Williams. It's like she expects more from them on the court then everybody else, but when she doesn't get more it's like she tries to punish them by bashing them. A lot of sports writers and commentators who didn't have very successful careers do that with professional athletes. It's like they envy the pros and are forced to give them props when they are winning, but as soon as they start losing it's like open season where they can spill all of their hidden vile and jealousy for not being gifted athletes themselves.

But poor Jelena was so tired walking to the helicopter that she had to take to get to the court, no wonder she lost.

I can understand why some players might not like to be put on a low court but look on the bright side player. Think about how happy the fans who only managed to get ground passes must be to be able to see a Top 10 player.

i think Mary Carillo is funny. I remembered before Venus played Maria at Wimbledon 05, she said to beat Venus you need to "mess her up a bit, mess up her hair, get her out of her classy element". Now what kind of nonsense is that? that's why I love her, she says some crazy sh!t

Exactly!!!
There is polish Eurosport commentator (Lech Sidor) and he's good at knowing everything about how to play tennis, but anything about the players private lives or schedules or anything apart from their games.
Anyway...

I really used to like him, until I got to read in a newspaper that he thinks that women's tennis is boring and in general - sucks!

That coming from a guy, that the next day tries to convince us to tune in, coz there will be "another great match" (and as we all know Eurosport is all about woman's tennis...)

I quite like most of the guys from British Eurosport, with the exception of Frew McMillan, because he sounds horribly smug and cannot admit when he is wrong. In Doha today, he was saying how Monfils was the second highest ranked Frenchman in the rankings and the other commentator said, ''no he's the third because Simon is the top French player (then Tsonga) at no.6''. So instead of admitting he was wrong Frew said, "oh, I just saw Simon and thought it was a British player." If you say so, Frew...

I think at the YEC in Madrid in 2007, they said that Hantuchova was "emotionally stunted!"

You're right about Frew being smug and a bit annoying, but he does actually offer a lot of good insights when covering ATP matches... his knowledge of the men's game is deep and interesting... it's just such a shame he shows the same disinterest in the women's tour that 90% of "professional" commentators display. It's extremely frustrating when commentators are apparently unaware of major news concerning WTA players for months and months after events take place. Certain Eurosport commentators, as an example, were still surprised by news of Chakvetadze's robbery when the matter was discussed on air months down the line.

Yes, I agree that he is a good ATP commentator but his disinterest for the women's tour is so evident. Having said that, I've always felt the rest of the Eurosport commentators show a genuine interest in women's tennis but maybe I'm not being observant...

I can't think of any good quotes off the top of my head, but Virginia Wade likes to make the odd cutting comment now and then. That said, she gets away with it without seeming offensive because she is jokey enough with her tone of voice. I demand more Ginny commentary, she should totally sign up with Eurosport and quit lazing around all year waiting for Eastbourne and Wimbledon!!
