Jelena Dokic heading to Hobart after being granted a wildcard into qualifying

January 07, 2009 JELENA Dokic will continue her preparations for this year's Australian Open in Hobart after being granted a wildcard into qualifying for the Moorilla Hobart International.

Dokic battled hard against two-time grand slam champion Amelie Mauresmo before falling to a 7-6 (11-9) 7-6 (7-5) defeat at the first round of the Brisbane International on Monday.

The 25-year-old is aiming to claw her way back into the sport's elite after spending 2008 on the second-tier ITF Futures circuit.

Morilla Hobart International director Michael Roberts said he was only too happy to have Dokic on board for this year's tournament.

“It will be great to see Dokic back in action at the Domain Tennis Centre, she is a great player and will be a fantastic drawcard for the tournament,” Roberts said.

“She was in good form in the Australian Open Wildcard Play-off at Melbourne Park last month and played well against a tough opponent in Brisbane.

“Hopefully she can continue that form into the main draw here.”

Qualifying for the Moorilla Hobart International begins on Friday with the main draw beginning on Sunday.

I'm just amazed that she hasn't been given a wildcard to the main draw. She's possibly the best chance they have of a home player doing well. It seems a strange decision to me, unless they want her to get match practice and assume she'll qualify.

she has quite alot of points to defend here :scared:

i think TA really wants to share the WC's around... no aussie player will recieve to maindraw WC's to AO warmups:)

I guess that's a good idea. Just when you compare it to British Tennis it's very different there. It looks obvious to me that Jelena plays and responds better to a bigger stage and ups her game.

jelena has always seemed to match her game to the ability of her opponent - hopefully she maintains the high level of play in Hobart though

I think Dokic wanted to do the qualifying instead of the direct main draw. Clearly she knew she wasn't ready to play with the top players in Sydney since she couldn't beat Mauresmo, so its better if she played with the players ranked 100-40

A good draw would have been a MD wildcard and Vaidisova first round !

I'm in Melbourne actually, but i'm going to Hobart for the weekend. I'm sorry for you that you can't see her play, especially since you bought your tickets. I'm not particularly a fan of her though, so I don;t think I'm "lucky" because she is playing Hobart now. I'll feel lucky if Wishink can in a round on Friday so I can see her play again on Saturday.

I think that was a wise choice she needs to ease her way back onto the main tour IMO.

I know, right? :sobbing:

Probably the right move for Jelena. If her form doesn't drop, and she should qualify for the MD relatively easily. Must get some wins here and/or a win at the Australian Open to defend some of these points.

Even though I'd of been happy with wherever she played I think this is a smart decision:).

She should have a good chance of qualifying here:bounce:!

I think this is the right decision. She will get real match play in qualifying and likely do well. After seeing that Mauresmo match, Jelena needs matchplay. A MDWC wouldn't guarantee it.

I think its the right decision. I think she will qualify and there are a no. of big players in the draw, provided she qualifies. Which is exactly what she needs right now.

Wise decision. :)

She will probably get more matches playing Hobart, rather than Sydney.

Excellent decision! :yeah:

She needs to play opponents below Mauresmo's level first to build confidence so she can do well against top players like Mauresmo in crucial moments. :)

They should have given her the main draw WC, since she´s one of the best australians AND is playing Fed Cup... wacky directors

No they shouldn't. She got a MDWC to Brisbane already, and they are trying to share it around, and she's probably better off playing quallies to get more match practice anyway.
