Amelie

Just saw the last two sets and at the beginning of 2nd set she seemed lost out there and so passive, Coin was passing her right and left, but Amelie raised her level and finally started to hit her shots with more conviction.
She came back from 2-5 in the 3rd by charging the net and firing aces on big points. And the tie-break was good : most of MP saved by great points.

Coin played very well : good serves, great volleys.Tough for her but i'm happy for Mauresmo. She showed great nerves to win this :)

Outstanding match from both players  :worship:

TB was of a high standard. Good to see both players winning the points rather than lose them majority of the time.

Allez Amelie :woohoo: I'm so relieved she got through in the end.

Julie  Ever since I watched her play against Groenefeld, Wickmayer & now Amelie she's really impressed me with her game & her never to die attitude.

Jan 7th, 2009, 03:07 AM
Mauresmo should be counting her lucky stars because she shouldn't have made it through for the second match in a row. Good on her though, she really stepped it up in the last couple of games and in that fantastic tie breaker. Shame for Julia because she played some good tennis. Great backhand over head to save match point and Amelie's defensive slice when Julie was at the net was fantastic as well.

FANTASTIC end to a pretty eh match. WORK ON YOUR FOREHAND MAURESMO!

Nothing comes easy for Mauresmo anymore.
Coin has some game but if Mauresmo was on hers then there really would be no competition today.

She's just not the same player from three years ago.

I think it's quite embarassing to see a slam champion and former number one playing like a twelve-year old pusher, I'm not sure what Amelie is getting out of these matches. Ivanovic will double-bagel her if she isn't careful.

I agree that Mauresmo was just average against Dokic and a bit lucky to get through but honestly today she raised her game (at least in the 3rd)and Coin would have defeated a lot of players.Coin will clim in the ranking quickly playing like that.

Poor Coin, came so close! She really collapsed at 5-2 up in the 3rd, and then regrouped at 5-5 but couldn't capitalize on her many chances.

The tiebreak was beautiful, and much of the match was good... but much of the match was also scratchy and tight. I wish someone in this tournament would just put Amelie out of her misery. She's been so passive and defensive. Can someome remind her that she's a Grand Slam champion and that she got to her titles with offensive play, not by being a wall. At times she did attack the net, mix up the pace, and play smart, but she still let Coin decide the outcome of the match.

This has got to be the match of 2009 in ALL of tennis so far. The tiebreak alone put this match on another level as both ladies hit winner after winner. Too bad match had to end when Julie backhand approach shot sailed long.

LindsayRulz

She still plays too defensively to be a treat for Ana IMO, her defense was quite good during today's match though, but it's not enough against a top player.

Crazy match, impressive quality tiebreaker. Both Coin and Mauresmo had to come out with great shots, even a few on MP's. A shame for Coin she worked so hard but Mauresmo is going to need to improve another 10 levels if she is going to play ana.

Well if it meant that the tiebreak could last another 13 points then I'm glad it happened and it's very good for Amélies confidence that she had the mindset and the talent to get herself out of the 3 matchpoint situations for Coin. It's clear to all the Amélie fans that 08 Amélie is gone away and hopefully for good!

Anyone who calls Amelie a moonballer is out of their mind. She throws in the high loopy forehand every now and then, but that's good strategy. Amelie and Julie were exchanging some pretty impressive rallies. I think a lot of people on this board need to find some old tennis clips on youtube to learn what true "moonballing" is. All those Venus/Sharapova screamfests have distorted all perspective.
