Second seed Dinara Safina says she wants to keep playing aggressively after a commanding performance on day one of the Medibank International Sydney.

The world No.3 blasted past Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in straight sets 6-2 6-1 in under an hour to set-up a second round meeting against qualifier Vera Dushevina, who had an equally as comfortable win over Australian wildcard Emelyn Starr today.

“It was actually not an easy match to play against her [Cirstea],” Safina said post-match.

“She goes for the shots, you know, so I had to avoid this and I had to be much more aggressive than she is. I think I did this pretty well today.”

After a break-out season in 2008, which saw her storm into the top 10 for the first time in her career, Safina said she would not be taking a backward step in 2009.

“If I want to win a tournament I have to be aggressive, because there is no player that you just think, ‘Okay, maybe I will win the match because the girl will be unexperienced and she will maybe [be] afraid of me’,” she said.

“I better lose the match going for my shots, and then I know it was not my day.”

“[Today] was a good chance for me to force myself to push even more to be much more aggressive.”

After beginning the year at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Safina is keen to play as many matches as possible ahead of the Australian Open.

“You always try to play as many matches as you can before the Grand Slam to find just to try all the shots that I’ve been working [on],” she said.

“Now I have played many matches, and still like I feel that I can improve and feel that there is a room to be more aggressive.”

Second seed Dinara Safina was similarly untroubled by compatriot Vera Dushevina, a qualifier, although the pattern of the match was unusual: Safina won the first three games, then Dushevina won three in a row to level, before the higher-ranked Russian took the next three to capture the opening set. SHe proceeded to dish out a bagel, winning 63 60.

women tennis is so emotionally and nervy, always has some surprise. Like you won the first 3 games easily, because the opponent bad. Ok, you full of confidence, and try to break again, it's a tight and long game, but something gone wrong and she can hold. And then, just for one moment, you are scared, because you tried everything but she won the game. You are shaky now, and easily lose your servicegame to love. 2-3. The opponent get some confidence and hold again. voilá, 3-3.

Safina advances to semifinals

Wednesday 14 January 2009

Dinara Safina has won through to the semifinals of the Medibank International Sydney after winning a tight tussle with Frenchwoman Alize Cornet today.

Despite double faulting on her first match point, the Russian second seed eventually managed to close it out 6-3 6-4.

It’s Safina’s second win over Cornet in as many weeks after the pair met at the Hopman Cup event in Perth last week.

Cornet was clearly struggling to handle the heat late in the second set, taking considerable time to recover between points.

Safina will now meet Japan’s Ai Sugiyama in the semifinals after she was handed a walkover by Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who withdrew with an abdominal complaint.

Kuznetsova, who has beaten China’s Peng Shuai and Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi this week, informed tournament organisers of her decision this morning.

Serena going to retire tomorrow. played two long matches, saved 7MPs (4 Stosur, 3 Wozniacki), and that big bottom is heavy to move, so this is enough for her, before AO.
LenaD playing 2nd week in row, now played a 2hr 40 min match against a pusher, maybe she want some rest, so maybe she retires too.

Hope Dinara steamrolls the "Aironwoman" tomorrow, to save some energy. ;)

I think Elena might do her russian duty and beat the american!:p Poor Caro... During the match it was obvious that Serena wasn't bothered enough and thought this is just prep for AO and still she won.
But this is all good for Safina! :yeah: She's been quietly getting to the semi....like a panther!

Newsroom
January 14, 2009

So next up for the Japanese veteran is Safina, who was far from satisfied with her performance against Cornet. Last week at the Hopman Cup, Safina was little troubled by the French teen, but it was a different story today as the pair traded breaks in the early stages of the first set. Safina made the breakthrough for 5-3 and held to take the opener, but with the air temperature hovering around 36 Celsius (97 Fahrenheit), two dramatic momentum shifts were to follow. Cornet raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set, but her unforced errors helped the Russian win five games in a row to end the contest, 63 64.

Afterwards, Safina provided a characteristically honest assessment of a match she felt she didn't deserve to take. "Of course I'm happy that I won, but I think it was a disaster, the match today," she said, despite recording a respectable 71% first service percentage to Cornet's 46%. "If she'd been a little bit more experienced I would have lost. I don't know what she did at 4-1, but I can say she gave me the match.

"I was a set up, and then I just wasn't aggressive enough," Safina continued. "Nothing was coming from me, it was all about her - either she makes a shot or she doesn't make it. It's not the way I want to win the match. I want to win it by myself, not that the girl loses to me.

“Either I play completely differently tomorrow or I may as well just take my racquets and go, because that's not the way I want to play. Sugi's a very aggressive player, and she will not lose the match, for sure."

Very honest from Safina!
Sugi- that's adorable!

I could sense she wasn't playing very well just from watching the scoreboard. Her serve was ok (or at least she had a nice %age) she just needs to step it up a gear from here on out.

PersephoneDisco
Jan 14th, 2009, 10:19 PM
I think she will step it up against Sugi. The H2H is a bit...but Dina's won the recent matches and that's all that matters. Sugi either plays really good or really badly and I hope the heat gets to Ai, literally.
Hopefully I'll wake up to a win that Dina is satisfied with!:yeah:

Jan 15th, 2009, 10:44 AM
good that she's in the final but I just watched the replays of the semifinals and she really has to step it up when she wants to have a chance against Elena...she made so many unforced errors, she has to work on that.

PersephoneDisco
Jan 15th, 2009, 10:57 AM
I'm not satisfied at all with Dina's performance, maybe if you switched the scores with the other semi then I could be content and believe it but the score says the match was far too close. I'm intrigued by the IN-FORM elena and how she performed....
Dina needs a confidence boost in my opinion..but she's in the final

"I played a solid game when she served for the second set at 5-4, then I played a solid tie-break too," Safina stated. "It was so hot; that's not an excuse though, because it's the same for us both. But I still don't feel I was playing my best, and it shows I've improved enough that I can play at 50% and still reach the finals."
“I don’t know when it was worse, yesterday or today. It was pretty hot even (when) I was warming up before the match outside of the court,” Safina said.
“I was just standing there, and I was like, I cannot move. But it’s not an excuse, because it’s (as) hot for her and for me.
Safina said she was helped by her coach's advice, on staying aggressive no matter what."Sometimes you play a match and you don't see things," Safina said. "My coach sometimes comes out and tells me I'm playing completely the wrong way. Today I felt something was wrong. He told me to just not back away from the baseline - he told me, 'Go back to Sydney, just don't run outside of Sydney.'" Krajan...

"It's just about who will play better tomorrow," Safina said. "You can't really play tactically against the top players. You have to go out there and just play your game. How can you change your tactics when they have no weakness?" - is she talking about herself or Elena?

Krajan made my day, he is hilarious, at least we found out they converse in english
I don't know why he came at the end of the second, it made her more annoyed and I kept thinking 'don't get into a mood, leave that for off court ;) :D' He probably thought her mind would wonder, and I can't blame him...

After what appeared to be a dressing down from coach Zjelko Krajan courtside, Safina cut down her errors and broke her countrywoman twice to claim the set in a canter.

Some even more colourful exchanges were had between Safina and Krajan after the second set, at one stage the 22-year-old telling her coach his laughing and joking with others in the stands was “pissing her off”.

The two managed a few smiles and chuckles to show there were no hard feelings but the pep talk hardly helped as Safina quickly found herself down 4-0 in the decider.

They make such a funny duo! Jealous Safina? Clearly the making up is fun ;)
