--------------------------------------------

- Gisela Dulko [DF] lt. ELENA DEMENTIEVA [5], 6-7 (2/7) 5-7

Gisela made a 4-0* start after Dementieva made a rash of unforced errors in windy conditions, but then Dementieva got her act together while errors crept into Gisela's game. It became *4-3; Gisela then extended her lead to 5-3*, but when she served for it at *5-4, she got broken to love with four errors, and went on to lose the first set after Dementieva dominated the tiebreak.

In the second set, Gisela showed good emotional resilience, and it went with serve until *5-5. But Gisela lost the next two points on a bad line-call and a dead netcord, giving Dementieva just the opening she needed to break and serve out the match.

I enjoyed watching Gisela play. Not only is she very pretty, she also showed flairsome power and spreading rallies in this match, and has cut out those silly chopped forehands she was hitting at Eastbourne.

DEMEN ____*@* *@* T 7(7)

The match was first on Court 2, and started at 12:12 BST. I watched this match on BBCi, but missed the first three games before BBCi Freeview 301 switched to tennis.

Gisela started *3-0 up after "a rash of unforced errors" from Dementieva in windy conditions.

Gisela serving 3-0: Dementieva forehand winner down the line. 0/15. Dementieva forehand long. 15/15. Dementieva off-forehand winner. 15/30. Body-jamming service-winner. 30/30. Gisela forehand winner down the line - on the sideline - but Dementieva didn't even try to run for it. 40/30. Gisela came to the net and hit a crosscourt backhand punch-volley winner.

Virginia Wade (re. Gisela): "She's light. She's not as heavy a hitter as Dementieva, but she gets just as much pop off the ball."

Dementieva serving 0-4: Gisela netted a forehand return - "her first really poor shot" [Virginia Wade]. 15/0. Dementieva netted a forehand off a mildly awkward deep crosscourt forehand from Gisela. 15/15. Gisela sprayed a wild crosscourt forehand lob-return wide. 30/15. A long rally saw Gisela retrieve well, then have the upper hand, but she netted a sliced backhand. 40/15. Gisela hit a backhand pass-winner down the line off an approach that sat up nicely for her. 40/30. Gisela hit a delectable backhand dropshot-winner down the line. Mark Petchey: "She couldn't have hit that any better." 40/40. Gisela mishit a crosscourt forehand lob-return wide, and groaned. Ad Dementieva. She hit a forehand just long. Deuce #2. Gisela netted a sliced backhand return with a cute little "ah". Ad Dementieva. Double fault (second serve just wide). Deuce #3. Gisela netted a forehand. Ad Dementieva. Gisela dumped an off-forehand dropshot halfway up the net.

That was a good game for Dementieva to get her serve (such as it is) going, and one or two unforced errors are creeping into Gisela's game now.

Gisela serving 4-1: Gisela's forehand clipped the netcord and rolled over for a winner. 15/0. Double fault (second serve clipped the netcord and fell back on her side). 15/15. Dementieva hit a deep forehand return with a bad, error-forcing bounce. 15/30. Dementieva forced a short, weak ball and hit an easy off-forehand winner. 15/40. Gisela backhand long.

Yes - a definite momentum-switch! :-(

Dementieva serving 2-4: Dementieva backhand lob long off a deep forehand down the line from Gisela. 0/15. A deep, low-bouncing ball from Gisela forced Dementieva to hit a backhand long. 15/15. Dementieva forced a short, weak ball and hit a crosscourt forehand winner. 30/15. Gisela netted an awful sliced backhand - was that supposed to be a dropshot? 40/15. Dementieva hit a forehand long, and said "niet, niet, niet, niet, niet, niet, niet." 40/30. Dementieva off-forehand winner back behind Gisela.

A crucial game for Gisela to stop Dementieva's run of games and hopefully take a commanding 5-3* lead.

Gisela serving 4-3 (new balls): Service-winner out wide. Dementieva muttered after missing a forehand return. 15/0. Dementieva crosscourt forehand winner just inside the sideline. 15/15. Dementieva forced a short, weak ball from Gisela, ran it down and hit a backhand dropshot-winner. 15/30. Gisela hit a crosscourt forehand just wide after a long baseline-rally with anxious grunting from Dementieva and a cute little "ai" from Gisela. 15/40. Dementieva netted a forehand off a nice short-angled crosscourt forehand from Gisela. 30/40. Gisela forced Dementieva to hit a defensive backhand lob wide. Dementieva sat on a line-judge's chair and retied her shoelaces. 40/40. Gisela hit a brilliant short-angled crosscourt forehand virtual winner, and pumped her fist. Ad Gisela. Serve out wide + crosscourt forehand winner of flairsome power just inside the sideline.

Dementieva serving 3-5: Service-winner out wide (106mph). 15/0. Dementieva off-forehand clipped the netcord and died away, forcing Gisela into error. 30/0. A spreading rally of flairsome power from Gisela: off-backhand + off-forehand winner just inside the sideline. 30/15. Dementieva backhand dropshot-winner. 40/15. Gisela netted a forehand off a deep ball on the baseline from Dementieva - if only Hawk-Eye were on Court 2.

And the moment of truth for Gisela, as the last remnants of that 4-0* lead allow her to serve for the first set.

Gisela serving 5-4: Gisela netted a forehand off a deep backhand down the line from Dementieva. 0/15. Gisela opened up the court but netted a forehand. 0/30. Gisela, pushed ten feet behind the baseline by a deep ball, hit a crosscourt backhand wide. 0/40. Gisela sprayed a horrible down-the-line forehand wide off a short ball from Dementieva.

Dementieva serving 5-5: Gisela's forehand down the line was called long but overruled as good by the umpire. On the replay, Gisela blasted a forehand return long. 15/0. Dementieva forced a short, weak ball and hit an off-forehand winner just inside the sideline. 30/0. Gisela forehand long. 40/0. Gisela dumped an off-forehand return halfway up the net.

Mark Petchey: "She has to hit out now that Dementieva's raised her game."
Virginia Wade: "Some poor errors coming off Dulko's racket because of indecision."

Gisela serving 5-6: Gisela sprayed a wild crosscourt backhand wide off a deep ball down the middle from Gisela. 0/15. Gisela netted a forehand on the third stroke. Ad Dementieva (SP #2). Dementieva forehand return long. Deuce #3. Dementieva went for a backhand down the line, but it was just long & just wide. Ad Gisela. She came to the net, but Dementieva's crosscourt forehand pass forced her to stretch wide and net a forehand volley. Deuce #4. Dementieva off-backhand return. Ad Gisela. She hit a forehand just long. Deuce #5. Gisela crosscourt forehand + down-the-line forehand forced Dementieva netted a backhand. Ad Gisela. Dementieva netted a one-handed backhand off a deep crosscourt backhand from Gisela.

It's amazing how negative Dementieva's demeanour became after 0/30 - muttering to herself so much in that game.

Virginia Wade: "Gisela paying the price for serving too many to the forehand. That's where she prefers to serve, but if you don't get the slice on it, it can go right into the hitting-zone."

6-6 tiebreak (all scores Dulko/Dementieva):
{0/0*} Gisela netted a forehand as she didn't get a good footing.
{*0/1} Gisela crosscourt forehand pass just wide - should have lobbed.
{*0/2} Gisela hit a "magnificent" forehand winner down the line after resisting a barrage of big shots from Dementieva.
{1/2*} Gisela netted a cheap sliced backhand return, and berated herself.

{2/6*: SP #4} Gisela forehand just long. Dementieva won the first set 7-6 (7/1) at 13:14 (1h02m).

Gisela showed her frustration by whacking the ground with her racket at the changeover - and well might she.

Dementieva battles into fourth round (Reuters)
Reporting by Paul Majendie, editing by Clare Lovell
>>>
Russian fifth seed Elena Dementieva battled her way into the fourth round at Wimbledon on Saturday: 7-6 7-5 after a patchy and slow start against feisty Argentine Gisela Dulko.

Dementieva was annoyed with herself afterwards, determined from now on to be much more aggressive on her serve and come out fighting from the very first point.

The Russian, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon two years ago, started by dropping her first four games on a sunny number two court.

But then she suddenly found her rhythm, fought doggedly back and landed the tiebreak 7/2.

"This is the last thing you want to have: a slow start on a grass-surface. Everything is so fast. You really have to be ready to serve from the first point, and be aggressive and take advantage," she said afterwards.

"I have played a couple of times against Gisela before, and I have never beaten her. So maybe today in the beginning, I was a little bit nervous," she said.

The second set was an intriguing battle of wills, with the determined pair level-pegging all the way to 5-5, when Dementieva made the crucial breakthrough on Dulko's service, and then held on to win.

The victory taught Dementieva some valuable lessons.

"The most important thing for me is to be focused in the beginning, and not give such a big opportunity to the other player," she said on her 10th year at Wimbledon. "I have to work more to play better here."

Dementieva said it was so difficult to win a Grand Slam because "you have to stay fit and healthy for two weeks, and it's all about sometimes a slow start, but then how you can progress and how you can improve your game."
