if they do not, they will have to pay a part of the money that the tournament give to the players.

if they have to pay, it will be the second time in 2002 that they need to pay a part of the prize for a tournament in Québec because in montreal we only had 1 top 3 and the rules is a 2 players in the top 3 for a tier 1 event like Montréal.

I have heard from very good sources, that they have a lot of trouble to find 2 players in the top 20 event to come in Québec city. The tournament was horrible last year and i don't think it will change this year...i see nothing good at the moment. I have heard that the 2 top 20 players who will maybe play in québec are: saughenessy, rubin(but it would be a surprise for me if she come with the result she have done at LA) or farina. except rubin i see nothing interresting there! Hope Jenny Hopkins will come.

One of the palyers should be Maleeva and the second might be Chanda Rubin... Shaughnessy is no longer Top 20 player...

Serena and Capriati played Montreal(serena pulled out but was in the draw) so they would not play a fine for that.

Meghann Shaugnessy was about 11 in the rankings last year when she won here!

the top 20 means the top 20 of the Gold Exempt List

I think WTA should have changed dates with the Luxembourg event as soon as they knew the Masters was moving to LAX since it would be a good preparation for some of the girls and a perfect place for players fighting for a spot in Los Angeles Season Ending Champs, especially seeing that all tune up events are in Europe

They do have 2 top 20 players ..they've got Dementieva and Maleeva..plus Kremer..even though she just slipped from 20 to 21. What I don't understand is how this event is so horrible? For the past 6 years it's been chosen by the WTA players as the best tier III tournament on the tour.

This could be Dementieva's first tourni win? I'm glad she'll be here! Good luck to her and Maggie- I'd actually prefer to see Maggie win this one!!!!

Kremer doesn't count.

Why doesn't Kremer count?

cos she isn't on the initial 20 of the Gold Exempt List
only those 20 are counted.

see Gold Exempt Ruling ;) (see Stats section of board) or WTA site for ruling.

Wow, I never realized how much flexibility one has being on that list. Its a great thing for players outside the top ten. So who do u think will get the four WC for the Gold Exempt list...I know Anna will be one again. What do u think Bovina and Vera Z; chances are?

Hey other Great news!!!!!!!!!!!1 Farina Elia is coming too!!!!!!!!!!!!So that means that we have four top 20 players....Come on, Kremer is 20 with the retirement of Testud!!!!!!!!!!!! These are great news...only disappointmen, Martina Sucha withdraw because of an Injury. But it gives the place to Drake which is a good thing because it is a wild-card they can giv to another canadian player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good tourney everyone!!!!!!!

you need to be inside top 50 after US Open (top 16 get in, top 17 this yr as Testud is retired)
so i think
Anna K
Pierce
Vera Z
Bovina

they don't go by ranks on who they choose after someone retires, but by "popularity" and if they are marketable.

I'm pretty sure they gave Testud's place to Chanda.
