I'm doing the freshmen class next week. Just kidding. :p

Nah I don't think its premature. It's very easy for a player to slip through the cracks once they drop out of the US junior rankings due to playing exclusively on the ITF women's & junior circuit.

I realized it's easier to keep track of all the top players early instead of trying to find the ones that drop from the rankings later. Besides this is only a small list of elite sophomores.

Congrats on your newest niece!

Everyone including your niece has to play at least 3 pro events before they even qualify for a WTA ranking. Not to mention they have to actually beat someone to get any points. I'm afraid a WTA ranking can't be given away but must be earned.

Allyn Elizabeth will end up crying and hating her uncle for NOT getting her option to go pro.

It's interesting that many of the blue chip recruits are now indicating an interest in Yale.

In her 1st three seasons Danielle McNamara the young 30 years old or under Yale coach has had two 2nd place finishes and 1 Ivy League title. But most impressive is how she now has Yale getting the consideration of blue chip players. :worship:

 NCAA rules:"You are are not allowed to have an official visit until after your first day of classes of your senior year." "The visit to the campus cannot be longer than forty eight hours in duration."

I don't know. I just saw her walking with Reka the other day. But I know that some basketball players commit right now, why not tennis?

There are tons of tennis players who have already committed to schools. Players can verbally commit to a school at any time. However, this is just a promise to the school/coach that said player will sign a binding letter of intent come signing day their senior year; verbal commitments can be broken without reprocussions. However, an official binding letter of intent cannot be signed until at least your senior year (different time periods throughout) and if broken there a consequences like loss of eligibility. I believe these basketball commitments you are referring to are just verbal and not actual signings (as those are only allowed senior year).

Again, if an unofficial visit, and she is on campus, she can talk to the coach all she wants. Off campus....you are correct.

A player's ranking has no bearing on recruiting guidelines - they are applied to all recruits the same. The point here is that she is on an unofficial visit so when she is on campus, the coach and players can talk to her without restriction. Can't step foot off campus and there are no meals, no jerseys, paid for by the school on the trip.

Unfortunately, many kids have selected schools before they are even able to take their official visits where the trip, meals, etc., can be paid for........wish they would move that date up at least the second half of the player's junior year.

To play devil's advocate again, this could also be pretty sad. If the top US juniors are going to college instead of having good pro results, then the US is screwed when it comes to having grand slam champions in the future.

But it certainly ups the level of college tennis which is great

Well that IS good, but ALL of them going to UF, STAN, UGA...not good :p

This just isn't true. Yea those schools bring in a few top recruits every year, but so do other schools. Because these are all schools with good tennis weather and great tennis programs. Why wouldn't these girls look to go to these schools? What do you suggest, spreading the talent around and giving each D1 school, no matter which school, a top recruit?

I mean let's be honest if I am an intelligent girl and I want to play really strong D1 college tennis, schools like Stanford and Duke are perfect. But the majority of these girls --and I will get shit for this-- just could not keep up academically at these institutions so they go to state schools where admissions requirements for athletes are lower than low and have an awesome tennis career while still getting a solid degree. Plus, there is something to be said about the location of these colleges. Allie, Lauren, Alex, and Olivia are all either native Floridians or have lived there for years. Two of UGA's recruits are from Georgia (Fuller and Anghelescu) with the other two from Florida and Texas (Jerjomina and Kimbell). Gibbs and Tsay are also both from California. These states are tennis hotbeds so it makes sense that the best institution in that respective state brings in the best recruits.

What are you referring to when you say "all of them"? It's not like Stanford is bringing in all top 10 recruits every year. And sorry, but you may not like it, but it is fair. Stanford is arguably the best university of academics and athletics in the country with a heralded tennis program. If you can use tennis to get in, why not?

 You are just made because these three girls aren't going to USC. Which is understandable because you want USC to have the best tennis team possible, but logically...just no.

Just be happy Lele couldn't get admissions to admit Maria Sanchez.

I know that, from a players' point of view, makes perfect sense. (Well I dunno, if talented players go to the same

team some won't get a chance to compete individually at large tournaments like NCAA, if she is playing at lower

singles positions..)

But what I meant was fair in TEAM COMPETITION. I'm not really for monopoly, you know. Compare STAN's recent recruits

to other PAC-10 schools, just no comparison, at least for the US girls. What fun is THAT? :p

Amalgamate
May 17th, 2010, 10:13 PM
Well okay. If you are going to compare Stanford's recruits with ASU, UofA, and Washington...yea there is no "fun" there because there isn't really any competition. But you have to look past their league and see that there are other schools who are also getting awesome recruits and Stanford needs to focus on beating those teams. The fun comes in when you have schools like Florida and Stanford with the rosters they will be sporting soon. Also, the best players flock to Stanford over ASU. Winning breeds winning.

Barte, Burdette, Tan, Ahn, Gibbs, Tsay..whoa. This is just too much.

Maybe for a next few years the topic should be not who wins PAC 10 but where will Stanford

position each players

But who knows, they might underperform like this lineup

Leimbach, Nelson, Fink, Fansler, Sanchez, Andrews, Entekhabi, Ramos (such stellar lineup :sobbing: )

Why compare with ASU? :) Should compare with USC, UCLA, CAL :D Well USC isn't that bad, Christian, Santamaria, De Simone..

Sigh. Congrats to Stanford, my second favorite school. I hope Duke still manages to get Capra and she doesn't turn pro. Someone needs to sit these girls down and show them that they earn 200 grand in college tennis, and the odds of earning that much in four years on the pro tour are very slim. 50k a year, you have to be what top 100, top 150 for that? How many college players break into the top 150? One every five years, maybe?

I know that, from a players' point of view, makes perfect sense. (Well I dunno, if talented players go to the same team some won't get a chance to compete individually at large tournaments like NCAA, if she is playing at lower singles positions..)

Actually, a couple of years ago, during the Liu and Barnes era, there were six Stanford players ranked in the Top 100 in the ITA system and I believe all six of them received bids into the NCAA Singles Tournament. If it wasn't all six, then it was five... I know it was a high number.

how do you know that she will be a 5 star?TRN will use the rankings of Sept. 1st to hand out their final ratings for the Class of 2011. Usually players ranked 26-75 are rated 5 stars. Haley Driver has a current ranking of 40.

Now the new ratings won't be revealed until October because TRN needs 1 month to make sure players have submitted all their qualified tournament results. But only tournaments up until the end of August will be used to determine the final ratings.

Nicole Long has made the biggest jump most likely going from a current 4 star to a likely blue chip player.

Her parents don't want her to go pro without a college degree. I asked Reka about that, and she gave that answer, plus apparently Capra is visiting the team all the time because she loves Duke so much.

Who are Davis and McPhillips? And if Capra plays, bang that's a guaranteed win at number one, plus we have Turewitz or whoever who seems like she'd be a solid 2, Mary Clayton, Rachel Kahan, Hanna Mar and Annie Mulholland, so that's six blue chips. Not too bad. Gorny can play well when she wants, and we still have time to land another top tier blue chip.

Davis is a top 20 ITF player and reached a 10k final over the summer, as did McPhillips. They are 2 of the top 3 class of 2012 in the country. If they both go to Duke, they better win NCAAs, or they will be compared to the mens Virginia team (all big recruits, fail at national level)

Definitely solid, but look at Stanford; Even if Barte graduates, Burdette, Tan / Ahn, Gibbs / Tsay

thats...formidable..is it the best lineup of the decade, even better than Liu era or what

Or at least I believe there is that clause where if a scholarship athlete leaves the school they can come back and still earn their degree (i.e. Marissa Irvin who played for Stanford and then turned pro and I believe she finished her degree at Stanford afterwards. I believe James Blake can do the same with Harvard.)

But the question is she in love with the team or the school? She might get along well with the seniors but they're not going to be there if/when she arrives (unless she arrives this January).

In general its hard to determine how top junior girls fair in college as most of them have been training/playing more than the most other junior players (i.e. most have reached their peak already and not going to get much better compartively to someone who hasn't trained/played as much). In fact most top junior players tend to regress once they get college in my opinion.

You are absolutely right! All you have to do is look back over the past four years and see how some of the Blue Chips fared and there were some players that definitely peaked entering college.

Based on Lee's ranking alone and not considering her actual play, she isn't going to much of an impact player. Yes she'll play in the line-up but probably will only be successful in the No. 4 to No. 6 range. Cal needs a future No. 1 player (when Juricova graduates in 2 years) or a No. 2 to No. 3 player with the graduation of Andersson and Cossou. Goransson has shown some glimpses that she can be competitive at No. 3 but for the most part her and Davis really are No. 4 to No. 6 type players.
