I don't want to start a new thread so I guess this is the best place....
There are three Romanians in the top 10 of junior rankings (Halep and both Bogdans) - has anyone here seen all three of them play and a have some opinion about which one is the most likely (if any) to suceed at wta level?

I have never seen Ana Bogdan play, but if I were to bet on any of them it would be Halep. She has a big game and a very agressive mindset on the court, never giving up. I have heard and read that Elena Bogdan is a pusher but the couple of times I have watched I found she mixes power really well into her game on her forehand. Halep has terrible luck with injuries though, if fully healthy she would probably be Top200 by now. I hope this is her year.

Let's hope that Alex' impressive run at Miami will be crested by another strong performance against Peng! Maybe she is finally overcoming her hard court problems. :)
Laura could be also very pleased with the final at Madrid! She wants to climb the rankings back as fast as possible returning to her old strength! ;)

Romanian Player of the Week:
Simona Halep(65) reaching the final of the WTA event in Fes, upsetting the fourth seed Arn in the quarters and repeating her run from last year only failing in the final to Brianti in straights. :yeah:
Romanian Upset of the Week:
Larisa Sporea(1162) defeating Anja Prislan(539) in straight sets tiebreak! :worship:
Romanian Fails of the Week:
Simona Halep losing in her second final of Fes in straight sets to Alberta Brianti(94)
Agnes Szatmari(408) being upset by the Swedish qualifier Hilda Melander(1162) :help:
Romanian Fighter of the Week:]
Larisa Sporea(1162) and Laura-Ioana Andrei(593) being able to close out their matches against Prislan(593) and Milevskaya(676) in straight set tiebreaks.
Simona is the first player who managed to be player and fail of the week the same time.
Despite her disappointing result, Ungur's come back to the ITF tour after her injury wasn't good either as expected... :o
Romanian Player of the Week:
Monica Niculescu(59) reaching the semifinal of the WTA event in Estoril, upsetting the fifth seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands and the second seed jarmila Gajdosova, only failing to the eventual winner Anabel Madina Garrigues in straights. :yeah:
Romanian Upset of the Week:
Monica Niculescu(59) defeating Jarmila Gajdosova(31) in three sets! :worship:
Romanian Fail of the Week:
So many fails that week especially on the ITF circuit, but the most shocking:
Alexandra Dulgheru(29) losing to Estrella Cabeza-Candela(245) in straights!
Also impressive Laura-Ioana Andrei's(591) first round loss to Sabrina Baumgarten(895)... :help:
Romanian Fighter of the Week:
Monica Niculescu(59) defeating Jarmila Gajdosova(31) in three sets after trailing a set and 2-4 in the second, eventually winning after a strong third set!
Alexandra's current clay form is devastating. Let's hope that she can come through her little slump  and also that Edina's injury from Charlottesville isn't that serious...
On the other side, Monica is in Top 50 again and very close to a new career high! :)
Romanian Player of the Week:
Sorana Cîrstea winning her first title since the WTA event of Tashkent in 2008 where she had to go over 3 sets in 4 of her 5 main draw matches, always losing the first set!
The victory there brought her back into Top 100 and guarantees her a main draw spotin French Open and Wimbledon! :)
Romanian Upset of the Week:
none...
Romanian Fail of the Week:
Top seed Mihaela Buzarnescu(365) got uspet by Yuliana Lizarazo(513) in the semis of Wiesbaden, though the Romanian girl went smoothly through her previous rounds only lost 9 games in 3 matches...
Romanian Fighter of the Week:
Monica Niculescu(49) qualifying for the main draw of Madrid, though she had to play semis in Estoril one day before. In the final qualifying round she beat Kudryavtseva being a set down and 2-4 in the decider! :worship:
Only a close lost in tiebreak against Scheepers hindered her from reaching the second round there
Romanian Player of the Week:
Liana-Gabriela Ungur(177) reaching the quarterfinal of the 50K ITF in Reggio Emelia after an injury break heading her way back to old strength. :yeah:
Honourable mention to Alexandra Dulgheru(29) reching the doubles semifinal upsetting together with Jarmila Gajdosova(28) the #1 team Pennetta/Dulko in the quarters, just to get beaten by the eventual tournament winner Peng/Zheng in the super tiebreak next round.
Romanian Upset of the Week:
None...
Romanian fail of the Week:
Alexandra Dulgheru(29) losing in the first round of Rome to the qualifier Polona Hercog(69) wasting 3 set points in the second set...
Also #4 seed in the quali Simona Halep(66) getting a bagel by Virginie Razzano(95) on clay... :o
And #6 seed Elena Bogdan(203) losing in straights to Galina Voskoboeva(294) in the first round of Zagreb is pretty disappointing...
Romanian Fighter of the Week:
Liana-Gabriela Ungur(177) winning her first round match in Reggio Emilia against the qualifier Ana-Clara Duarte(231) being a set down! :)
All in all, a rather bad week for Romanian tennis with Sorana Cîrstea and Alexandra Cadanu retiring in their second round matches. Also Alexandra Dulgheru's shape is concerning because she has to defend her title from Warsaw last year with a difficult draw and 3 consecutive losses on her favourite surface clay! :scared:
$10,000 Santa Coloma De Farners:
R1: (2)Ines Ferrer-Suarez (ESP) def. Diana Stomlega 7-5, 6-1
Romanian Player of the Week:
Mihaela Buzarnescu(360) winning the $25,000 ITF in Izmir upsetting the 3 top seeds of the draw not dropping any set in 5 matches! :yeah:
It is the first 25k win for the Romanian since her come back after the injury! :)
Romanian Upset of the Week:
Elora Dabija(452) beating top seed Patricia Mayr-Achleitner(112) in the second round of $25,000 ITF in Brescia in straights! It's the biggest win ever for the Romanian girl and the first for her over an Top 150 player! :worship:
Romanian Fail of the Week:
Alexandra Dulgheru(28) winning only one single game against the second seed Vera Zvonareva(3) after some good wins in the previous rounds and the bad clay form of the opponent, though I'm not really sure about her intention there....
Honourable mention to Simona Halep(68) only winning 3 games against Jelena Dokic(65) on her opponent's first clay match of the year...
Romanian Fighter of the Week:
Alexandra Dulgheru(28) winning in the first round of Brussels against Polona Hercog(55) who gave her a beat down the week before and also led in that match by a comfortable set. Then Alexandra finally pulled herself together and won in the end 6-4, 6-2 in the last 2 sets don't allow the Slovenian any further break point!
As expected Alexandra couldn't defend her points from warsaw last year and drooped out the Top 30, but her clay form seems to stabilize on a decent level just before Roland garros.
Let's hope for a successful French Open for all of the Romanian girls! :cheer:

Do you and other members think is appropriate to post some rankings here from time to time ?
Monthly is too seldom, weekly is too often so maybe every 2-3 weeks and if are major changes. What others think about this ?

But I am new on the forum and I may be wrong.
Other topic it may not attract so much interest and the postings will spread in too many directions.

Apr 28th, 2012, 01:56 PM
Definitely fail-worthy as well, with a good chance to win any other week, but nothing beats Simona's and Sorana's spectacles. A somehow healthy Svetlana would have won or taken that MP, so her victory in R2 was kind of lucky as well - and yes Laura was her punchbag and even in that match Pous didn't have any weapons or game to trouble Irina, but if you don't keep the ball in play match-ups are getting kind of useless. She looked absolutely drained out there, her fitness is worrying...
Anyone knows something about her because her name is Romanian.
Imagine if she will become an important player what reactions will be.
Maybe Begu is same as Horia Tecau better just in doubles.:fiery:
So upset by Halep defeat, she could had a good series of wins.

I think Simona deserves that figther of the week spot, even if she eventually lost the match against Venus ;)

She even led by a break in the 3rd (4-2), so of course it was good to bring it to a final set, still failed somehow. And if I add her to that list, it's hard to draw a line because even players that are losing matches could be named 'fighters'. I mean every 2nd Monica match is exceeding the 2hours mark not to mention her 3 set matches full of drama...
EDIT: I guess it's a definition thing. For me 'fighting' is not just staying for 3 hours on a tennis court. To me it's kind of the opposite of 'choking', alas coming from behind to win a close match.

I know. Actually rather a case of 'fail award', but we in the Romanian subforum only start counting after choking away at least a double break and with Monica's and Sorana's quality performances in Madrid that week, Simona's lapse got a bit lost.

I have a feeling that this week our girls will have good results.
so I'll update the rankings after it.
The main idea is Monica is going slowly down :( Sorana a bit better
and the rest of the girls pretty much the same

Pretty much, and to be honest, there isn't even a single match where a Romanian player is favourite to win. Best chances to go through is Sorana in my opinion, but to look at the matches properly:
Niculescu - Morita:
Monica won 4 games in their one and only previous meeting, although it has to be said that this one took place during her biggest slump in the spring of 2009. However, Monica has had 0 match preperation and we don't even know if she is halfway fit or just playing for the money. I mean if she would have felt better, she could have taken the Dallas MM as well. Usually struggles against flat hitting Asian players even when she is fit. No expectations, althugh Morita has been quite poor and a bad compatitor this year, so if she can she has to hang in there, but I don't think so.
Winning chance: 10%
Cirstea - Lisicki:
Pretty good match up for Sorana who apart from the FO performed very well at the slams so far this year. She definitely has the mental advantage here, saving MPs in 2 of her wins against the mentally instable German, who on top of that always struggles to find her rhythm after 'injury breaks' of hers. Sabine is actually a very poor return player on Hard considering her ranking and Sorana possesses a great serve these days when it's clicking, actually the serve is what brought her up again.
Winning chance: 70%
Halep - Benesova:
Toss up match with Simona being injured as usually at that date of the year and Iveta slumping and choking badly at the moment. Both players are lacking self-confidence at the moment, but I fear that Simona won't have the stamina to pull through.
Winning chance: 45%
Cadantu - Wozniak:
Got doubled bagel after a good first set in Budapest where she played up to her potential, but on Hard Court I can't see this one even getting close at the moment.
Winning chance: 0%
Begu - Wozniacki:
No, just no...
Only chance lies in a possible retirement.
Winning Chance: 5%
Gallovits - Voegele:
Someone who can't beat Falconi at the FO or Soler Espinosa at Wimbledon won't win this one for sure. Even if the draw looks good, it won't happen.
Winning chance: 20%

I would rate Monica's chances higher and Sorana's lower (She got double bageled by Sesil a few weeks ago, and Sabine is always dangerous). Otherwise, I agree. Edina could us surprise us tho.
Cirstea is the overwhelming favorite.
Edina has no chance at all.
Simo beat Nadia in Miami this year but she's just coming back so I don't expect much from her.
As for Irina... I don't wanna jynx anything.

After a „too good to be true” R1 there are 4 girls left.
I am a bit superstitious so is nice to repeat the same procedure. :p
Tatishvili wouldn't be ranked inside Top 100 when it wasn't for her 1286382 walking byes in the R1 of majors, so Sorana better wins this one. She should actually overpower her easily and according to her blog, she feels quite well. Still, you neer know with her.
Edina should enjoy the night session, it will be the last for her I guess. She has had a great week already.
Simona showed that she can beat Petrova, but I don't think the fitness will allow her to repeat that.
Irina-Camelia should just focus on her serve for once. That would be enough already to defeat Soler who even got beaten by Cadantu this year on Hard. The upset over Caro should boost her confidence and when she is playing well, she is at least playing well for the whole week, usually.

Not even the most optimistic Rus fan would give her 80% to beat Begu. This match is in Irina's racket, and unlucky for Arantxa Irina isn't a brainless ball basher.

Yes, Arantxa is getting bageled/breadsticked in every match she plays at the moment. This one is really Irina-Camelia's to lose and that's where the problems starts because most of the time it's not her opponent winning, but herself losing the plot.
She isn't a brainless ballbasher by any means, she is just moody and unsteady in everything she does.

Something strange happened to AO. The girls who eliminated Romanians was beaten only by the girls who eliminated Romanians. And this is the case in the final too.

Nothing new, either they get shitty draws to begin with or if they get a cakewalk for once, they mess it up big time.
It's also common knowledge that at least one of our girls has to play a Top 10 player in R1.
