Yes I know it's horribly early:lol: but the groups and schedule for Hopman Cup are already out, so I thought I'd just start the thread already.

Groups:

Group A

(1) USA Serena Williams and James Blake
(4) Australia Casey Dellacqua and Lleyton Hewitt
(6) Germany Sabine Lisicki and Nicolas Kiefer
(7) Slovak Republic Dominika Cibulkova and Dominik Hrbaty

Group B

(2) Russia Dinara Safina and Marat Safin
(3) France Alize Cornet and Gilles Simon
(5) Italy Flavia Pennetta and Simone Bolelli
(8) Chinese Taipei Su-Wei Hshieh and Yen-Hsun Lu

I like it, Flavia vs Dinara again. And doubles should be awesome anyway:hearts:
Marat might not play though, I really hope he does:unsure:

Schedule for Italy
4 jan: Russia vs Italy
6 jan: France vs Italy
8 jan: Italy vs Chinese Taipei

It's a new season, I don't expect her to play as good as the last weeks of 2008. The start of 2008 wasn't as good as the end of 2007 either.

So, she lost in singles, 7-5 6-3. She was up 5-3 in the first and 3-0 in the 2nd:tape:
It wasn't a great match, lots of UE's, but still, till half in the 2nd set it wasn't so bad, you could see that all the things she improved last year aren't gone :)

They won the mixed in super tiebreak. It was fun to watch:hearts: Flavia totally owned Marat, won nearly all their rallies:lol: But that went in good fun :) She gave him this typical Flavia-devilish grin at the net:lol: And he said in the interview that he was toying with her. I think she was toying with him:devil:
The girls were by far the better doubles players, and seemed to have most fun too :)

Italy is pretty much ignored in Hopman Cup media so far I think:tape:
So, lovely cutout from post-tie interview after Russia-Italy:

Are you enjoying yourself in Perth?

(Flavia) Yes. A lot.

That was all they asked her:lol:

Ok, one more cutout then:

Well you tried to take on Flavia there a few times. I don’t think you won too many.

(Marat) No well you know, that I need to find my mixed doubles. What’s the point to play to Simone? There is no point because he’s, he’s playing really well and Flavia she’s a female. So you can toy with her.

Uh oh, uh oh. You’re in trouble! How are you gonna get out of this one?

(Marat) Easy. She likes the way I play it so she was kind to me and she played my game. So thanks for that to happen.

She just sucks:ras:
She was playing better the 2nd half of the 1st set, but then started the 2nd bad again:rolleyes:

She's missing too many easy shots, not hitting sharp enough, and standing way too far behind the baseline to be able to dominate, despite having the better groundstrokes.

i think this kind of game will give many truble to the other players 'coz there're no girls who play this tennis

I doubt it would be very effective though.

As I said, only saw it from the end of the 2nd set, but they played ok. There was notably more chemistry than against Russia. Flavia's volleys were pretty good but Bolelli played better than against Russia too.

And now to the winners. You must be both pretty excited. Good mixed doubles pair.

(Simone) Yeah, today me and Flavia I think we played good. Flavia played great in the second set, and she made some, something unbelievable now. So really we had fun. I mean we enjoyed the match.

Well Flavia, a tough one in the singles, but you’ve really come through as probably the best player on the court, the two mixed doubles games you’ve played.

(Flavia) Oh, okay. Well I have some problem on my singles. But I’m very happy with the doubles. You know, I enjoy a lot to play mixed with Simone. I think we play very good. Maybe we can think to play some grand slams?

I was just gonna ask that. Now you’ve played mixed doubles, you haven’t played too many mixed, but if you carry on here maybe, maybe it’s a new partnership?

(Simone) Yeah, we can try. I mean this is the second time we’ve played together. We can try to play something more both mixed.

I was thinking about that too :)

"I have some problem on my singles"
It's a big problem, girl :p

Pennetta was also happy with the doubles performance, but not with her singles loss to Cornet.

"It's different. Mixed doubles for me is not like normal doubles and I feel I play much better in mixed, I don’t know why. Maybe it's because I have a guy in front of me and I know I have to play at my best to beat them. I'm disappointed for my singles for sure because I didn’t play very well," Pennetta said.

"My coach said I played better than the first match, but I don’t have this feeling for the moment. I have one more match and need to play more aggressively and put more serves in the court.

"It's very tough to climb back, it takes time to play matches and find your touch again. For me it's good to be here because I can play three singles, three doubles and I'll be ready for Melbourne. I enjoy it a lot to play here, the crowd is incredible, it's fun to play mixed and it's good to be here."

I can't say I agree with Urpi either, she didn't play better against Cornet than against Dinara:p

btw, I stole this from a thread in GM.
If I remember correctly, Flavia makes top 10, if±
* Petrova loses 1st round, Flavia makes at least the QF, girls ranked 14-20 don't make the SF or beyond
* Petrova loses 2nd round, Flavia makes at least the SF, girls ranked 14-20 don't make the final or win
* not sure what's possible if Petrova makes the 3rd round;)

The 2nd set was bad :o
She won 7 games in a row to go 6-2 2-1 up and then somehow she let Mara back into the match, lost her head completely, still managed to hold on, but lost the set 5-7 anyway.
At least she was able to turn it back around and win the 3rd relatively easily:)

Some observations:
* her passing shots were good
* she won nearly all points at the net (doubles specialist eh;))
* the serve was ok, except for the 2nd set, when she hit like 6 DFs:tape: She hit quite a few aces, and in general, it was ok, despite a low 1st serve%
* she is FIT. Almost looking too thin, I thought.
* she's still our tempery girl;) Loved that:angel:

If she keeps her head together, Moore definitely shouldn't be a problem (she beat McHale 9-7 in the 3rd).

Tomorrow 1st round doubles btw.

I was at the match. Thank god she won. I spend the whole bloody day in 40 degree heat just to watch her play! Firstly there was like only 10 people on the court (mostly little annoying teeny boppers) and no atmosphere what so ever. She played alright. It seems to me when the serve starts to break down the whole game follows. She served pretty well up to 3-4 in the second and then it fell apart with double faults and silly errors. Was pretty patchy at times. Played some good points here and there. From what I saw she will belt moore and medina didnt play that well either. Mara is the most awkward player to watch :tape: Also on a side note she was really cute at the start of the match when all these sea gulls were flying around. She seemed scared of them which was funny. All in all I was really happy she won coz I was in pain the whole day in the sun.

from Flavia's interview after today's match:
"Un derby è sempre difficile perchè ci sono anche tanti altri aspetti - dice la brindisina - ti trovi a giocare contro un'amica e una compagna di squadra. Ho cominciato bene, poi mi sono un po' incartata: e quando il match diventa lotta con Mara è sempre difficile. All'inzio del terzo set mi sono ripresa: le ho tolto il tempo ed ho tenuto fino alla fine. Certo - aggiunge - mi piacerebbe entrare nelle top-ten, ma non voglio mettermi pressione".

translation: "Derbies are always difficult because there are other stuffs but tennis on court - siad her - you have to face a friends and a team-mate. i started the match well, than i put my self into some troubles: and when the match becomes hard Mara becomes harder to be overpassed. and the begining of the 3rd set i get better: i broke her rythm and i have been strong 'till the end. It's normal i want to be into top 10, but i don't want to put me under pressure...

Margaret Court
(12) Flavia Pennetta (ITA) vs. (WC) Jessica Moore (AUS) - First meeting
On paper, Pennetta should take this in a canter, for Moore is an 18-year-old wildcard ranked 136th in the world. But the way the Aussie contingent has been punching above its weight in Melbourne this year, anything is possible. Moore's first round draw couldn't have been more fair - she played fellow wildcard Christina McHale of the United States - but she'll notice a difference in class today. Ever since she played perfect tennis to upset Venus Williams in the third round at Roland Garros last year, 26-year-old Pennetta has been operating on a whole new plane, reaching her first Grand Slam quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, and mixing it with the big guns by reaching finals at Los Angeles and Zürich. It is worth noting that all those results came on hard courts - not bad for a player whose best successes had come at smaller claycourt events. To date the Australian Open has been her weakest Grand Slam, with one third round finish in six attempts, but that might be about to change.

i'll translate the interview...maybe we have been all too strik with her...
"it was a match i could win, it's very bad when you know you could win but you're not able to do that because you're play at you 30/40%. it's the first time it happens on a big Tournament and it hurts. once i feel like retiring but i decided to finish the match anw."
talking about her mixed:
"my foot hurted even if i was only walking, but i had decided to play with a man who lives playing doubles so i decided to play anyway..."

Flavia had a wrong behaviour yesterday, but a person who never eard of Flavia should understand thinks that are not true from this article, she never had a behaviour like yesterday before

Today was a pretty good day, as Gisela and I won our first doubles match of the tournament. We had a lot of luck, because about two minutes after we finished the match it started raining unbelievably!

I still have some jet lag, so I've been waking up at 6am :( I spent some time in my room, surfing the internet and watching some things, then went down at 7:30am with my coach and some players for breakfast. We left the hotel around 9am; I practiced with my coach for about an hour then warmed up with Gisela a bit for doubles, had a light lunch then went to play at about 1pm. I don't think they went back on court after it began raining. Anyway, since then I've been to the gym - nothing too much - then came back to the hotel around 4/5pm for a little siesta :) I woke up 20 minutes ago! And now I'm writing this.

I'm heading out to dinner with my coach, Gisela and her brother again. We may go out tonight but we're not sure where, but of course I won't be out too late as I'm playing my first singles match tomorrow!

I also said I'd tell you which movie we ended up watching. It was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, with Brad Pitt. It's his newest movie and it was nice.

Thanks for all of the questions. Please send more! I'll talk to you all tomorrow...

Ciao!

Flavia

How do you and your coach prepare for your matches, do you ever watch tapes of your next opponents? - Savino, Italy
We don't use tapes, mainly because by now we've seen almost all of the players play! There are new ones here and there, but normally I've either played or seen the other player playing before, or have a good idea of how they play.

Last year you had a lot of great moments playing doubles with Maria Kirilenko and you were always laughing together. What kinds of things make you laugh on court? - Damien
We were just enjoying ourselves so much. We know each other pretty well and we are usually pretty confident when we play together, so we can relax a bit. Sometimes one of us will say something stupid in the 15 seconds in between points, like when we're talking about what we'll do later that day, and we'll just laugh. I think it helps us to just have fun with each other!

Will you be playing in the new tournament in Marbella? - Tony, Spain
I'm not sure yet. Right now I only know my schedule until Miami, and soon I'll talk to my coach and plan the rest of the season. For now I'm just focusing on the tournaments I'm in, and not looking too far ahead. Especially this week and next week, I'm just going to try and do my best and enjoy myself.

Congratulations on reaching No.11. How does it feel? - Maurizio, Italy
I was very happy about it. It's always good to be No.1 in Italy, but No.11 in the world is also a very important number. But I wasn't trying to get there. We've been working very hard in the last year, and it's great the results are showing, but I'm just trying to stick to my job and doing my best. I think everyone else was talking about it more than I was, although of course it's a great honor.

Hello again everyone!

I was going to start the blog tomorrow, but I had some time this evening to write so I'm starting it now :) It will probably be a short one though, because I didn't really do anything that interesting today!

Yesterday it was raining here so I couldn't practice, but today I woke up early and had a long practice session, just to get used to the conditions and the courts. Then I went to the physio and came back to the hotel. I spent a few hours in the room just talking with friends, going on the internet and relaxing. Around 7pm, me, my coach, Gisela Dulko and her brother all went to the shopping center and spent a few hours there. We had dinner too, and we just came back now, it's about 9pm. Now we're going to see a movie but we're not sure which one - we have a site on the internet where you can watch movies and there are so many to choose from (of course I'll tell you all tomorrow!) After that I'll go to bed.

That's about it for today! Talk to you tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

It was a difficult day for me on the court today. I didn't play a good match at all. I just didn't feel in the match, and I wasn't pushing the ball hard enough. It wasn't a good feeling. Maybe the high altitude had something to do with it, but we prepared for it so I don't know. I tried to fight until the end though, and I had chances to make it - like when I was up 6-5 in the third set and she was serving at 15-30, but then she came up with three good serves and then played too good in the tie-break. I tried so hard to come back and win it. I think you always have to stay on the court and fight, no matter what the score. As you get closer and closer, anything can happen. One ball can decide everything. But next week is another tournament and I hope to do better there :)

One strange thing is that it was raining during the second set until I was down 4-2 in the third! It was light rain so we didn't stop, but we did stop for 10 minutes in the third when it was harder. Then 4-3, 5-3, 5-4, 5-5, 6-5... and the tie-break.

I have to look at the positives though. I'm still in the doubles, and Gisela and I played very well yesterday, so I think we can fight for the title. I'll definitely be staying here to focus on the doubles, practice, and get ready for Acapulco. And, of course, I will continue to blog!

It's about 7pm now... I'm going to take a shower and am going to the player party really soon, which should be really cool. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow! I'll also answer more questions tomorrow... thank you so much for all of them!

The player party was really fun last night! They started off with a good dinner, which was very international. They had pasta, salad, meat, fish, and just about everything anyone would want, which was great. After dinner they played a lot of music - Spanish music, samba... They called two or three guys to dance, and they would take players and teach them how! It was really funny. Usually it's always the women who are dancing. I tried a little bit but not too much, because I was tired :)

Today we practiced a little bit for doubles in the morning and won our match, then I practiced with my coach for another hour. I just got back to the hotel a little while ago. Tonight we're going to a party for the tournament's sponsor, which is in a very good restaurant. I'll tell you more about it tomorrow.

That's it, nothing special really happened so far today! I'll answer some of your questions now. Goodnight!!

Flavia

Do you still talk to Silvia Farina Elia or Rita Grande, now that they aren't on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour anymore? - Micha, Germany
Yes, I have spoken with Rita a lot of times lately, I just saw her in France at Fed Cup. We SMS and are in touch, for sure. I speak with Silvia sometimes too, but more with Rita - I played doubles with her in her last year on the Tour.

Do you ever watch tennis matches just for fun? - Bobby
No, I actually don't :) When my friends are playing I want to see them, yes, but other than that I don't. I like giving support. If I'm watching TV and it's on I can watch for maybe two or three games but no more. Before I was a player I did watch it though - my favorite players were definitely Monica and Jennifer.

Does all of the travelling and living in hotel rooms get boring? - Tony
Sometimes, yes! We spend 25 to 30 weeks of the year in hotels and travelling on planes, trains, cars... I really miss home sometimes. You want to stay home with all of your things, and whenever I come back I just want all of my stuff around me! I bring some things with me sometimes but most of the time I can't do it. But I have been living this lifestyle for a long time, so I'm used to it now!

You beat Venus Williams three times in a row - how did you do it, is she your favorite opponent? - Andre, Germany
I feel comfortable when I play her. The first time I played her, in 2007, I lost to her, but I beat her a week or two later, then two more times last year. Her game doesn't bother me too much. She is so powerful and hits the ball very flat, and I like that. I think I do, at least! Then I lost to her in Zürich last year, so maybe not! Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

What is your favorite Italian soccer team? Daniel, Venezuela
I don't like soccer a lot. I started understanding it a bit more during the World Cup in 2006, though. Now I have a lot of friends playing in the Milan club, so I support them for the moment. It's a good team to support!

It's from their first doubles match in Bogota this year against Mayr/Peskiric. :)

You beat Venus Williams three times in a row - how did you do it, is she your favorite opponent?

stop with this question :sobbing:

Oh, I found it in "Gisela's on court pictures" (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=226627&page=45) :) I believe it's been taken from the official website.

Flavia Blogs from Bogotá - Thurdsay, February 19, 2009

I spent a lot of today practicing and at the gym, but I also went and watched my doubles partner Gisela's match, and she won 6-3 in the third, which I was happy about.

Other than that I didn't do too much today, just spending some time at the club, mainly in the player lounge and the restaurant. We just pass the time together talking, doing stupid things on the internet :P Sometimes we'll catch some of the matches. Sometimes there are video games too. Actually, I have a Nintendo DS and sometimes I bring it along to tournaments with me. My favorite games are strategy games, like ones that test your knowledge and memory, and things like that. But I didn't bring it here, because right now I'm reading this book by Khaled Hosseini. It's a true story about a woman from Afghanistan, and I'm completely into it. I'm not too much into reading books but it's very good.

Now we're all going out to dinner in a famous restaurant here in Bogotá, called Andres. Everyone has been telling us it's a very special place and it's something different from what we've been doing, so I'm very excited!

Tomorrow we have our doubles semifinal. We already won one title together in Hobart, so it's our chance to make another final. It would be very good for us.

I'm off to the restaurant soon - I'll tell you all about it tomorrow :)

Ciao!

What is your best and worst personal quality? - Meryam, Egypt
This one is always tough to answer, because you really should be asking the people who you spend a lot of time with! I think my best quality is I'm always smiling and positive with people, but maybe it's also the worst thing, because sometimes I might be too nice to people who aren't so nice. But luckily, I don't think I've met a lot of bad people.

How do you celebrate a good victory? - Tom, Israel
It depends. If i don't have to play the next week, I'll go out and have a good dinner - I'm Italian, so I love good food! Also maybe a drink, and maybe some dancing. So if I'm not too tired and don't have to go off to another tournament right away, I can enjoy myself with friends. But if I'm playing again that week, maybe just dinner, no dancing or anything else. You have to be ready to play!
