First Day Wrap Up

Best Victory: Venus Williams def. (5) Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 7-6(7)

Venus displayed her grass court dominance in the first set and was cruising for an easy win but seemed to turn into a hot mess while up 5-3 and lost the next 3 games in a row to go down 5-6. After a quick wore-drobe change into some sexy white shorts (pictured above), Venus broke Jelena's serve easily to force the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was full of drama, shrieks, splits, complaints, injury time outs, line question, water break time outs, shoe tying time outs, racket changing time outs, towel time out, and that was just from Jelena. But in the end, last year's finalist took the tiebreaker 9-7 to end the match in straight sets.

Worst Loss: Agnieszka Radwanksa def. (6) Amelie Mauresmo W/O

Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo has been missing in action for weeks now and her fellow grass court experts are literally falling apart on the surface. The rosewater dish is looking like it could be anyone's at the moment and a suprise victory is surely in the making. Hopefully Mauresmo, Spears, Williams, and Krajicek will get it together!!

Hot Mess of the Day: Britney Spears def. (4) Kim Clijsters 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4

Dear lord! Brit had such a hard time closing this match out. She lead 5-1 then turned into an error queen and wound up losing the second set and was barely able to scrap her way through the third set and into the second round. The defending champion has had a slow start to the season as have her other grass companions but things are starting to pick up as Spears, Williams, Krajicek, Pennetta, and Azerenka who are all grass experts are into the second round with Alicia Molik who recieved a round one bye.

Quote of the Day: "I heard that she eats puppies and new borns for breakfast." John McEnroe on Maria Sharapova.

Stat of the Day: 82 - The number of errors from Spears and the same number of double faults from Dementieva even though she didn't play a match today. :weirdo:

Kirilenko Downs Granny, Onto Semifinals

World Number Eight Maria Kirilenko has stormed into yet another semifinal on tour, defeating senior citizen Alina Jidkova 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the Quarterfinals of the International Women's Open in Eastbourne on Saturday.

Kirilenko has kept up the stunning form that saw her reach the Australian Open final where she was robbed which she lost in a heartbreaker by turning up the heat on the grass season. Kirilenko won the title in Birmingham and is the only player on tour to reach the quarterfinals or better at every grass event this season.

"I really commend Alina for her effort today, we didn't start until 6pm tonight and I know that's past her bed time. She really hung in there and I think her great grandchildren in attendance were really proud of her showing!"

Caption: Alina, left, with her husband Gerard and their great grandchildren before the match!

Jidkova, coached by the same desperate mess that led the now-forgotten Nathalie Dechy earlier in ATC, tried every trick in the book to throw off Kirilenko. Her antics peaked after the second set, where Jidkova took an injury timeout to have a physician to look at her hip, for which she recently underwent a hip replacement surgery in the off-season.

We think it's time Alina finally got put in a nursing home for good and her coach select a more inspiring choice to lead in ATC.

Sorry for the lack of points/posts this week Dav! I'm a bit stressed out at the moment, I've just got sooo much going on :(

That said, I'm sure I'll find time for Wimby points. That 2nd set has gotta go.

Congrats Tamarine ;)
