WHICH ANA IS BETTER---LONG-TERM---the RG Ana or theZurich/Linz/YEC determined, comeback Ana?This'll be my first and only post...would rather hear the opinions of the other fans than restate my own a bunch of times. With 2009 a couple months away, here's a chance for all of you to write a little book on where Thrilling Rollercoaster Ana has brought you as a fan:).
To ME,the current Ana is better, and we'll know WITHOUT A DOUBT next year based on how she defends titles...or plays following a title win...where she's ALWAYS struggled in the past.As to the second area, some might say,"Oh,she made the semis of(whatever) after she won The (whatever)Open."...let's be honest, though;Ana can reach the semis of a tourney even when she's playing mediocre, for HER,tennis. We can't only look at WHERE she finished;we must evaluate the quality & consistency of her play. You'd have to thoroughly search to find where Ana was consistently solid for 2 tourneys in a row.Any examples at all?How about THREE tourneys in a row?....Nothing pops into my head....NONE of this is intended to put :angel:Ana:angel: down;my point is that we'll have INDISPUTABLE evidence that Ana is better if she starts defending titles strongly or maintaining a high level on-court in back-to-back tourneys.
Even when Ana won RG,I wasn't convinced she was a "true" #1 because she lacked that fire, that hatred of losing, that great champions have to have...she was TOO nice.Though we can't ask Ana to fundamentally change her identity, she needed at least a portion of that drive that Henin,Hingis,Graf,Evert, etc. have had.Though RG WAS glorious,it didn't represent a major breakthrough that lifted Ana to another tier...just look at the follow-up results:eek:.Ana had EVERY REASON to feel confident at RG where EVERYthing fell perfectly into place for her:Henin had just retired;Masha and the Williams girls often suck on clay;Dinara, still outside the Top 10 then, and JJ didn't scare her at all at that stage;and don't you think Ana noticed that Dementieva was in the OTHER half of the draw? This was the only previous instance where showed the push that she has recently, yet it was more opportunism than it was any sign of growth within Ana.
....And THEN,the ugliness of Wimbledon where Ana looked like a timid, frightened little girl,on the verge of tears,vs. the lowly-talented Zheng(and this wasn't the first incidence of such fragility with Ana).In the bigger picture,Ana lost her love for tennis somewhere after RG.We can only guess what it was and I have NO interest in prying into her personal life(perhaps she'll discuss it when she's retired...or not)....Maybe Novak told her that he never wanted to be more than friends...or an old childhood pal committed suicide...or Ana read the Cathy Tanvier(or Andrea Jaeger)biography.WhatEVER it was,it stole Ana's love & motivation for tennis.Don't be fooled by her old press statements;DEVOTED Ana fans have testified that she was FAR from motivated to regain her position.Sven had to tactfully coax her on to the practice court where she whined and complained as if tennis were a chore.
Gracias a` Dios, some combination of Sven,Ana's family,a supportive Verdasco and,of course,Ana herself, restored that joy for the game that she's been known for:D.Even BETTER,Ana has demonstrated a dissatisfaction with less-than-the-best even when she's had valid excuses for losing...such as the fluke, flawless serving that Venus had in Zurich or the serious virus at YEC.She hasn't just focused for an isolated tournament as with RG 2008.No,over a THREE-tournament span,Ana had a grittiness that we've never seen from her.Sure, she's come back within individual matches, but that had more to do with Ana 'letting fly' and going for every shot pell-mell,with her raw talent overwhelming her opponent...you couldn't compare THOSE comebacks with the mentally-tough battles of champions who just REFUSE to lose. Finally,Ana has that previously-missing ingredient that will make her more than merely a talented ballbasher.she has that crucial desire to be,AND STAY,#1.
In closing,2009 will prove decisively if Ana has risen or not,and I'm CONFIDENTLY expecting wonderful results from Ana:).True to my word, that's all I've gotta say for this sort-of thread. What do YOU ALL think;where,tennis-wise,is Ana right now???
