Kristie Ahn has been very public in articles that she plans to go to college while playing other events each summer.

Anyone with an WTA above 500 is clueless if they think they have pro option... GET A DEGREE and develop your skills.

Ask Jane Chi how that works... she is the poster child for 'smart' and using college tennis to develop.

gouci
Nov 28th, 2008, 06:06 PM
Unfortunately the negative stereotype in tennis is if you don't turn pro by 18 you're a has been. Another negative stereotype is the only ones who play college tennis are those that won't or couldn't make it in the pros.

The USTA promotes these negative stereotypes by not helping elite college players develop their pro potential and passing over college players when awarding wild card entries into their events. The USTA is not looking for the next Jane Chi or solid pro but the next Williams sisters or future grand slam winners, which means allocating most funds developing the teens that have "potential" to turn pro by age 16.

Until a woman who played college tennis makes the WTA top 20 these stereotypes will persist. It doesn't help when a 2-time NCAA champion like Amber Liu has never broken into the WTA top 200.

The flipside is playing college tennis is a great experience & gets you a degree. On the other hand playing a full pro schedule costs about $50,000 a year in travel expenses. That can double if you bring your coach along. So unless you win more in prize money than your yearly expenses cost,... as a pro your family which usually pay the bills will end up in debt and the player without a degree. This is the fate for the majority of those who turn pro.

:haha: Seems like Sam wants to get out of Cali!

Or she did the math and realized there are basically no scholarship spots in those schools. Unless California has someone transfer or removes someone off of scholarship, they will be unable to over a scholarship spot (they don't have any juniors on scholarship). USC is already booked with Lao committing in 2010. Stanford I believe will have one open spot (Burdette) unless they do some fancy footwork again. UCLA though could have two spots with Schnack and Wetmore.

I've heard of two other So Cal HS seniors who are 'delaying for a year to play the tour' before they commit. These girls may have others listed as 'of interest' but I hear they have actually decided to delay a year. Seems like there is a massive traffic jam trying to get to those four Pac schools.

Also, heard Haley Fournier (good game) is seeking an opportunity that will allow her to play soccer in the fall and tennis just in the spring.

I think Cal might not recruit a third player for 09-10, so that they can recruit in 10-11.

If you look at the player profile, next to the Interest Level column is a column titled "Offer?." It allows a recruit to indicate if the school of interest has made a scholarship offer to her. Last week for Kaitlyn Christian under the Offer column it said "Yes" for Syracuse and now it says "No."

I am new to this forum and to the college recruiting process. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the following: In the past few weeks, at least three girls from the 2010 class, Julia Courter, Charlotte Calhoun, and Haley Fournier, have given verbal commitments. Is this common for girls to commit so soon? Is this becoming a trend? Since they are juniors, I am assuming they visited the schools at their expense? Do tennis coaches prefer to get early commitments? In an earlier post, it was mentioned one of the players was going to play two sports. How is this possible when tennis is in the Fall and Spring? Thanks.

Yes, Colleges found out last year that those that waited were sorely disappointed. In fact, some top 50 teams were in shock when they waited through the summer and discovered many of the top 75 players had already committed. Now that they were caught with their pants down they are actively recruiting two and three years early. Yes, many 2010 and 2011 girls have already visited at lest 5 tennis teams. You can go when you are in the area. Remember, even though they are giving you a scholarship..if you have to pay $600.00 every time you fly home maybe the scholarship was not so great after all. If you snooze your options may be limited get an early start and let colleges know you are serious. Never post that you are interested in more than 4 schools

I think the smart ones are realizing what a mistake it would be to pass up a good education at a great college vs. struggling on the pro tour making very little money. You can always try the pros after college!

Who is Christian being defiant to by going to USC? Maybe defiant towards Syracuse.

Is Syracuse just a squatter on Christian's profile and using it like a billboard  or did KC enter that high interest in Syracuse herself is what I want to know.

Syracuse staf goes on there using coach functions and marks up kids he would be interested in. Maybe his way of letting them know but deceiving.

Did same a year ago to a few and later they came down one after another. Coach can indicate an offer or interest also... even if the kids are not really interested; then the kids have to take that off. Kaitlyn clearly does not go on the site often. She is confirmed as a USC commit and has been since last fall.

Not sure why Arianna Colfer has not made Pepp her firm announcement (though I am told it is on her facebook page). She dropped UCI but left USC as a high option this week... yet USC has not money left for next year if Christian takes the open.

I think he meant definitely... not defiantely

While they are good, the bottom line is they are Stanford's No. 7 and No. 8 singles players. And while they are pretty good at doubles, they're not good enough to merit a full ride on just doubles. Furthermore, they could find better players that would further increase Stanford's depth. I mean if you swapped out Yen for McHale, McHale would easily have a starting spot and push everyone down a spot.

Looks like Courtney Clayton is still at Stanford and is scheduled to play in the upcoming regional this weekend.

I don't see Clayton on the 2010 roster... who did you get your information from?

She was on the competitors list for the Northwest Regionals but the draw is out and she is nowhere to be found. And her name has been removed from the list. I guess it was an administrative error?

Something I noticed from the 2011 class is two blue chip players have already committed after being offered scholarships early. Isn't that kind of unusual since a large part of the 2010 class hasn't even committed yet?
Can a coach offer someone in 8th grade a scholarship to get them locked up early? What are the rules on this?

Santamaria and DeSimone?? USC??

They can offer them and verbally commit but nothing is official until November of their senior year where they sign letters of intent.

They will have enough. Boonstra and Revzina are graduating, so they have at least two scholarships up for grabs.

The problem that Florida will have in the future is they will have to recruit players that will value the team more than the individual (i.e. having to play second fiddle to Embree and Will for however long they decide to stay at Florida). There will be some top players that won't want to play No. 3 singles. They might not mind playing No. 3 for a year but for three years, not everyone is up to that.

I can think of only one school that has done it successfully year in and year out: Stanford.

Florida never seems have to many that stay the whole four years. They either transfer or turn pro after a year or so. A lot of great individual players but the word "team" might not be used very often down at Florida.

They had it often when Andy Brandi was there, but not so much under Thornqvist. If he can keep Embree and Will for at least 2 years, they're going to be loaded. I think they're already pretty loaded this year and on paper, at least, could be the team to beat heading into the spring. I've been waiting for them to re-establish themselves as a power and it looks like they're on the way to doing that. They definitely have depth this year, something they've been lacking with all the transfers or players leaving early.

Well Caryssa Peretz for 2010-11 is a blue chip recruit.

The recruits Virginia gets IMHO seems to be about the right level for their top 30 ranking. I don't think you can look at their best recruiting class ever of blue chipers Kristen McVitty and Jennifer Stevens and expect that every year.

This is really surprising because from every article I've read, Belinda has wanted to go to Stanford. I wonder what changed - did she change her mind, or did Stanford go after other players they thought were better?

Barring transfers and loss of scholarships, Stanford had only one scholarship for next year, which went to Kristie Ahn (and was basically guaranteed to her more than a year ago).

I imagine Niu is affected by the new ruling that requires players to enroll within six months of high school graduation as she could have played on the pro tour as an amateur for awhile and wait for next year when Stanford has two scholarship spots open.

In addition, Niu hasn't had the most stellar results as a junior player.

Hope's is a name I've seen, but I've never looked up her record until today after she took a set (http://lta.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=01648140-FB3D-4440-AC4E-1396E6931791&draw=4) off Vickers at the British tour event. I'd assumed she was younger. Her LTA rating (http://www2.lta.org.uk/Search/PlayerSearch/PlayerDetails.htm?Id=1-WB-44887&BSMGuid=4b35e959-a1c7-4b76-a502-41cab0911949) isn't as high as some, but it seems she may be a bit of an academic superstar (http://www.whtimes.co.uk/sport/welwyn_garden_city_tennis_ace_hopes_for_wimbledon_ chance_1_16657).

Penn State needs all the help they can get. I thought they would be better this year in the Big Ten.
