Are you sure this is true? I know that a few years ago, UCLA had 9 scholarships but the following year only had 7 as a consequence. But if I remember correctly there were some special circumstances to that deal...
I'm not completely sure.

But I think your recollection being off is causing you to be confused. Alex McGoodwin took a medical redshirt her freshman year leaving UCLA with only 7 players to complete with that season. She was later granted a 5th year of eligibility which didn't count towards UCLA's 8 scholarships so they had 9 scholarship players McGoodwin's 5th year. The next season UCLA had 8 scholarships as normal.

I seriously doubt it was her decision. I bet she had her scholarship removed and could no longer afford to attend Duke. Duke is an academically rigorous school obviously, but if your an athlete, you are provided with enough help and support that pretty much anybody can float by.

NB: This is all speculation (well not the part about Duke athletes getting all the help they need )

She was a walk on. She was never recruited. She received a scholarship last season because we had one to give, but we were always looking for an eighth player. I don't have an update on Capra, but I should soon, as I go back to school Thursday. I'll make sure to talk to Reka and Ellah and get the 4-1-1. I'm really surprised about this girl. I don't know why she would transfer as a senior. Seems odd to me. She also doesn't seem like the world's best player. I doubt she's better than Ellah. But if we do get Capra in the spring, then we'd be a great team obviously.

I think it's looking more and more likely Capra will join Duke in the spring.

Oh man. That would make us almost unbeatable I think...

Capra
Nze
Reka
Liz Plotkin
Israel girl
Clayton

We could play around with this line up. Reka never loses a match at 3 anyway. Ellah was always more competitive at #2. Shouldn't lose many. Capra is a pretty dang solid #1, Plotkin wouldn't lose at #4 given how competitive she was at 2 this season, and Clayton is getting stronger day by day. I don't know anything about Israel girl, but I imagine she'd be a more than solid #5. That would be an awesome way to end my Duke career! I'd definitely go cheer them on at nationals!

This has been confusing, but I THINK you are right.

"It used to be that Division I recruits were allowed to take a year off without penalty before enrolling as a freshman. However, that will change for players starting this year - for the Class of 2010.

New NCAA bylaw 14.2.3.2.2 takes effect on August 1, 2010. Simply put, it states that players may only take 6 months off after high school graduation (as determined by the first year of high school enrollment) or the first opportunity to enroll after six months have elapsed.

Players who choose to go this route and do NOT enroll during the 6 month time frame will be charged with a season of intercollegiate eligibility for each calendar year after the 6 months (or next opportunity to enroll) per bylaw 14.02.9

After the 6 month period, if the student-athlete has engaged in "organized competition" the student-athlete must fulfill an academic year in residence for each calendar year after the 6-month period has elapsed. These years must be fulfilled before the student-athlete will be allowed to represent the school in competition."

This has been the most confusing rule ever for so many people  I didn't pay much attention to it because I knew I wasn't going to be affected, but I'm pretty sure it started with class of 2010.

NCAA Compliance
NCAA Rules Update - Enrolling After Graduation
by USTA Staff (with permission), USTA Junior & Collegiate Competition, 26 April 2010
This winter, the NCAA passed bylaws changing how long high school graduates can wait before enrolling at a Division I institution. The NCAA bylaw in question - 14.2.3.2.2 - specifies that tennis players must enroll in college within six months of high school graduation. Organized competition after those six months have elapsed will cause tennis prospective student-athletes to be charged with a season of competition and be required to sit out a year in residence upon enrollment.

As originally written, those bylaws would impact all graduating classes - starting with this year's class of 2010. High school seniors who had already planned to take time off after graduation would risk losing eligibility.

Date Change

There is some good news on the status of changing the effective date for this legislation.

The NCAA Legislative council has approved amending the effective date to August 1, 2012. What this will do is protect the graduating class of 2010 - and those players who had decided pre-legislation to take a year off. As of right now, it looks promising that those players will be able to take that year off as planned. With this change, the class of 2011 will be the first class subject to the 6 month grace period.

Do keep in mind that the amending of the effective date is considered a new proposal, so it is subject to the 60-day override period (dating from mid-April). Secondly, though it does not happen often, the NCAA Board of Directors can further amend this action if it chooses at its April 29 meeting.

Before members of the Class of 2010 affected by this legislation get too excited about the possible effective date change, remember that there a couple more steps in the process before it is official. In other words, this year's seniors should still have a back-up plan in place that allows for them to comply with the current effective date (Aug. 1, 2011) for the 6 month grace period - for most that would be Fall '10 or Spring '11 enrollment.

There is an article on NCAA.org about these changes as well for reference.

1. Amalgamate's post above comes from TRN Feb. 2010. The author of that article failed to realize that the August 1, 2010 start applied to all sports except tennis and skiing.

Here's my proof from earlier discussion (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=17519327&postcount=264).

2. tennisbuddy's post above comes from TRN April 2010. The author of that article failed to realized if the new start date is August 1, 2012 then the 1st class affected is the class of 2012.

The 2011 class will not be affected. If you graduated in 2011 you can take 1 year off then sign a L.O.I. by July 2012 before the new rule affects you.

I just read the improvements and those will each make the ranking system even better. As far as junior tennis in the US, we have that site's approach and the USTA's point-based system. The previous tennisrecruiting approach was the much more meaningful one of the two in judging ability and the one that college coaches used(use) religiously when scouting.....and with these improvements, that gap will be even wider.

When you're doing a ranking just once a year, it's usually out of date after 3 months. The only way the system they currently have would work is if you rank them from 1-500 but don't classify them into Blue Chip, 5-star player and so on.
I looked at this 2011 class coming up and you see way to many 5-star players with records against other 5-star players of 2-11, 3-10 or 4-12 which means these players are probably more like 4-star players. By updating them twice a year, that will alleviate some of the problem!

johnnytennis what are you talking about? TRN updates their rankings EVERY week (http://tennisrecruiting.net/list.asp?id=2115). The 1st column lists their current ranking and the 2nd column list their ranking from the previous week.

Their ratings, different than ranking, that they give out for blue chips, 5 stars etc. are based over a 1 year period from Sept. to August. The rating gives a snapshot of how a player ended the previous yearly ranking cycle.

I'm wondering if TRN modified their formula partially because some blue chip players drop out of the rankings when they start playing mostly WTA futures and challengers during the summer. The new criteria of including highest rank would probably keep these blue chip players on the list. And the other criteria of making more bottom players eligible to be ranked is probably designed to increase their subscriptions among bottom players.

Gouci... Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Yes, of course I know the ranking is updated every week. I am talking about the rating. This is updated once a year which was wrong because so much can change over 12 months especially in a sport that is played practically all year around...And like I was trying to say is my last post, there is to much of a difference between the top 5-star players to the bottom 5-star. A lot of these current 5-star players should be rated as 4-star and by updating twice a year, it will give more credibility to the rating system. That was my point!

From my observations the ones who try to apply their own simple concept of math to the rankings/ratings are the ones who may end up confused about it.

Example

The 5 stars players range from 26-75. Say you take the record for player #64. If her record vs other 5 stars is 3-10 that would be about right if the rankings are accurate. Why because most of the 5 stars are ranked above her and SHOULD beat her. In this case about 23% (11/49) of 5 stars are below her and 75% (37/49) are above her. Again her win-loss record should be about 23% wins to 75% losses or 3-10 if the rankings are correct.

On the other hand her record against 4 stars maybe like 20-4. What shows that a player is a 5 star is not her record against other 5 stars but her record against 4 stars. That's what says she's better than the level of a 4 star recruit.

Point well taken about tennis ranking using advanced math, and our observations are often too simplistic, but, my sense is that tennisrecruiting's ranking gives just a little too much credit to the player who stays longer in her natural age group, and gets some wins over five star players who are are playing up. Or maybe not.

Georgia Tech has had lots of defections the last 2 years.

Irina Falconi
Hilary Davis
Rebecca Marino
Noelle Hickey
Maya Johansson
Kirsten Flower

Starts to make you wonder?

The most unusual thing is that it really started after Tech won the NCAA title. Maybe girls were attracted to the fact that the team won the NCAA title but then realized the school wasn't for them (i.e. the girls didn't do enough research before committing)?

Flower was from Ohio so it was inevitable she would return and Marino had a Riske-like situation by planning to go to school and all of a sudden had great results.

Uh, yeah, that much is history. The comment that doesn't make any sense was:

"Flower was from Ohio so it was inevitable she would return."

As if all players from Ohio return home?? Trust me that when Kirsten left for GT, there was no intention she would 'inevitably' be coming back to Columbus.

I think she's a graduate of Delhi University, though I haven't managed to tie up the loose ends to prove it. A google on "Sanaa Bhambri" "Delhi University" returns a lot of relevant hits, including http://www.sportskeeda.com/2010/01/29/a-quick-chat-with-sanaa-bhambri/:
Sanaa is equally good at studies. Since her schooling at DPS, right through to college she has been amongst the toppers in her class. Currently, pursuing BA (prog) in French and Philosophy, Sanaa loves listening to music. Besides, she is a voracious fiction reader. But with Ankita and Yuki Bhambri for siblings, she is never too far from tennis. Her only ambition is to be in the top 100 in world tennis within the next two years. And the best thing is – she knows what it takes to live one’s dreams. She practices five hours a day to turn her dreams into a reality. Way to go!

I don't know anything about Indian higher education, but assuming they inherited a three year degree course from us, could she be taking a postgraduate course and have a year of eligibility or something:confused::confused:

davidjaime in your rush to post as much as you can you entirely miss the point on one of the most important things about updating a team which is being thorough.

A team update is half-ass when:

1. You don't use this board's search feature to check if the same info had already been posted earlier.
Minessota gets
Natalia Pintusava of Belarus
ITF Junior Combined Ranking of 35 (13 Apr 2009)
Ex. You're just 11 months late about Pintusova (http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=16856227&postcount=196).

2. You don't take the time to research which players have left the team to keep the team's scholarship capped at 8.

Any newbie can post all the incoming freshmen from a team roster. But the hard part is accounting for all 8 scholarships and figuring out who left.

Ex. St. Mary's had 1 graduate from last season but gets 3 new players. So 2 (Spitzer & Gunnarsson) must have left.

The hard part is figuring out which scholarship players leave which may take a little time. That's why you never see me updating 15 teams in 1 day. I just do 1 or 2 a day but make sure the team roster update is thorough and complete.

If you want to update a team and do a thorough job by listing all the changes than great. If you're going to do a half-ass job by reposting old info or leaving out the team subtractions than I rather you not do an update.

I WONDER if they actuallt take them to Hawaii for the one match JUNKET over spring break? Are they sailing close to the wind legally? Has no one brought a lawsuit? Has no one brought a lawsuit?

The reason why no lawsuit will likely ever be brought is that no one but the lawyers stand to gain. American football likes things just fine the way they are, and women's tennis (and other non-revenue sports, both male and female) exist largely because of the revenue generated by football.

Simply stated, without Title IX, it is fairly safe to assume that any school that currently carries women's tennis without also fielding a men's team would cut the women's squad for the same reason they have cut the men: Lack of funds.

Read on a Facebook pic comment of Cako with Bethany Beach doubles trophy that she's an official professional. We'll obviously know for sure by Fall, but wanted to let y'all know

Didn't she have a bunch of credits going in, though? Is it possible that she already graduated?

OMG I knew she wanted to graduate in 2 1/2 years but dang! :(
I think it has to do more with seeing how Alison Riske and her were both moving up the ranks together and Riske put aside scholarship to go Pro while Cako heads to College thinking what if? Riske then becomes 104 in WTA rankings also reaching semis at AEGON Classic losing to Maria Sharapova in 3 sets, while Cako is practicing in Tempe, Arizona. I just wish she could really enjoy the moment and not feel above it! Maria Sanchez spent 4 years and she truly developed and grew and now is moving up the ranks so quickly this year, even beating the younger Radwaska in March who is rank in the top 55 and recently made WTA Final!

she went to ASU with 2 years of college credits already but I thought she would use all 4 years of eligibility and get her masters.

Duke snags a transfer in Fresno State's Marianne Jodoin. Interesting to see where she fits in the line-up.

WTF...Marianne at least could play NCAA due to her being top dog at her conference..if she plays lower positions at Duke she might not be able to make the cut-off..

Quite a snag by Duke, for sure. She MIGHT play #2..

Fantic, have you ever been to Fresno?

Yes, only once. There was a triple header that day. The next day went to CAL to watch PEPP at CAL.

And why do you ask? Are you going to say Fresno is boring?

You go to Wisconsin's website and they have a photo of Stracar on a press release from July announcing the teams upcoming schedule this year. You would think they would update the website on a more timely basis if she has left the program! Also, Wisconsin shows only 3 people on their roster for the 2012-13 season. They must have a lot of recruits coming in this Fall! Badgers have had a fair amount of turnover recently!
