View Full Version : Who else see Zvonareva surprizing us at the YEC?

Playing the way she is at the moment, I can see her beating anybody on a constant basis:eek:

She might beat Ana, Elena if she shows up like always at the YEC:o, and Sveta.
Maybe Dinara, depends on the speed of the courts.
I can't see her beating either WS, or JJ.

frenchie
Oct 25th, 2008, 05:21 PM
The only players who will be tough to beat for her are JJ and maybe Serena

Koon
Oct 25th, 2008, 05:22 PM
She could make surprise if the draw is :
Dinara
Ana
Svetlana
Vera
;))If she plays the best she will reach to the SF :)That's surprise :p

Oct 25th, 2008, 05:23 PM
You mean surprising us by not crying?

Or are we talking tennis?

On either account I don't expect any surprises she'll beat someone and cry, lose and cry, lose and cry... ;)

The only players who will be tough to beat for her are JJ and maybe Serena

And Dementieva, and Kuznetsova, and Ivanovic, and Venus.

Zvonareva can beat anyone, but she doesn't. I want her to do really well, but I wouldn't bet on her to do anything. I thought Petrova would surprise in 2006, same with Hantuchova in 2007, so I'm hardly going to listen to myself here.

The same players will do well/win here as they always do.

Like any sport anyone can be beaten on any given day or time.

However, those quick to add Venus to the list of players Bepa has a chance again should be reminded of the H2H which Venus leads 5/1. Bepa last taking a set off her and beating her was 2003.

Just sayin!

She definitely can beat a top player and she did it many times but i don't see her doing that 4-5 times in a row because she still doesn't have the endurance and mentality that other qualifiers have.

 You're joking right? Vera seems to be the type that will beat everyone she's supposed to when playing well.. maybe even demolish them.. but need a bad day from a top player to have a chance.

I don't see her getting out of RR.

Rewatch the Moscow final,frenchie.

Should have won that one, great opportunity but proved that..Jankovic is a champion, played amazingly, Vera not able to handle the pressure, not taking her chances.

Vera is a great player, but she never peaks at the stages of the tournaments she should

Pheobo
Oct 26th, 2008, 06:48 AM
I think Zvonereva winning a set would be surprising enough.

She just doesn't have the nerve to hold up in a RR tournament where there's immense pressure on her in every single match.

If it was on ability alone then Bepa is almost anyone's equal. She has the talent, just not shown yet that she has the temparament. The chance was there at Stuttgart against JJ. But..

Oct 26th, 2008, 07:51 AM
i think she can make the SF depending on the draw. her upcoming match with Ana will be interesting and perhaps a preview of a possible YEC match up. if she holds her nerve in the final it might be a bit of a breakthrough for her and she'd be going into the YEC on a confidence high. but if history is any judge, i wouldn't expect too much. i'd die with glee if she did pull a YEC upset though.

Vera is a headcase when it comes to playing big matches and facing other top players. Last time she played, she got bagelled in all her matches or nearly.
I hope she proves me wrong! Go Bepa :D.

Depends what draw Vera is in. She can definitely beat Safina, Kuznetsova, and possibly Lena D (since she doesn't play so well at the Yec). The other four, I doubt it.

Agree, Vera just can't play her real level against top 10 player, just watch this final against Ivanovic, Ivanovic played crap all this week, Vera was amazing but we all know she'll collapse herself during big meetings.

God no.

Zvonareva isin't a bad match-up for any of the "elite". She just has the type of game which gives the top players enough rhythm without being able to hit them off court. It's a lovely, textbook game, but she doesn't have any huge weapon.

Well, Ivanovic is slumping and Sveta is a mental midget. Good prediction, but her opponents are not that great at the moment. I can see her losing in straights to Jelena.

I just hope she won´t reach the final because she will be so nervous that we would have the most boring YEC-Final of the History :help:

The same players will do well/win here as they always do.

Well, no. Not really. Because of the past dozen or so semifinalists, only three are playing right now, and only one has ever won the title before. The only players who have truly done consistently well at the YEC in the past 5 years are Henin (retired), Clijsters (retired), Mauresmo (crap), and Sharapova (crap/injured). Venus and Serena have relatively mediocre records at the YEC (compared to their records pretty much everwhere else), as do Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Jankovic, and Zvonareva. Ivanovic did fine last year, but she's been barely top 20 material since June. Safina is playing for her first time.

In reality, this YEC was wide open at the beginning. Considering Serena was highly tipped for success, it's interesting that she is the last player who has to win to qualify. Venus hasn't played here in AGES, yet comes through big...it doesn't seem too shocking in retrospect that Zvonareva would make the semifinals, but of course hindsight is 20/20. Considering Kuznetsova and Ivanovic being in such miserable form for the past 4 months or so, it's hardly stunning Zvonareva has clinched a semifinal spot. It will be surprising if, say, she beats Jankovic, or if she makes the final, or wins the whole thing. But baby steps.

Incidentally, when did Zvonareva get hot? Was she always this good looking? I have never found her to be all that attractive (especially not in photographs) but she looks FINE on court. Stunning, really, and a tempestuous personality to boot. Obviously not top 5 material all time, but there's room in the top 5 of the current generation. She could muscle her way in if she stays looking fine and well dressed.
