Sony Ericsson championship in Doha recording strong ticket sales

More than 21,000 tickets and 95% of premium seats have already been sold to prestigious season-ending event featuring top eight women’s tennis players of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

The city of Doha is getting ready to host, for the first time, the Sony Ericsson Championships, the prestigious season-ending tournament featuring the top eightwomen’s tennis players and top four doubles teams on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, competing for record prize money of US$ 4.5 million. With the tournament less than a month away and stars Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina, Elena Dementieva, Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova having already qualified, anticipation is growing so much that 21.000 tickets have already been sold in less than 10 days, including 95% of all premium tickets.

The Sony Ericsson Championships will be held from November 4th through the 9th at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex, which is undergoing a complete transformation. This is the first time that the Middle East will host the Sony Ericsson Championships.

Ticket sales started less than 10 days ago, and in the Lower and Middle Tribunes, 95% of the tickets have already been sold to the general public and the sponsors. In the Upper Tribune, 20% of the tickets have also been sold.

“We are very pleased to feel the warm welcome given to us by the fans and sponsors for the upcoming Sony Ericsson Championships - Doha 2008. While our construction work continues, our stands at the City Center and Villaggio Malls, as well as, our ticket sales office at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, are receiving an amazing number of requests for more tickets. This is all proof that we have a great event in our city and we really look forward to seeing a full stadium for the Sony Ericsson Championships - Doha 2008,” said Tournament Director, Karim Alami.

“I am delighted that the Sony Ericsson Championships have sold out nearly the entire capacity for the Lower and Middle Tribunes in such a short time,” said David Shoemaker, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour COO, General Counsel and Head of Asia Pacific. “The speed of sale demonstrates fantastically well that world-class women’s tennis and the Sony Ericsson Championships are hugely popular in this region. I’m positive these fans will be thrilled by what promises to be an incredible week in Doha, both on and off the courts.”

The Qatar Tennis Federation and the Qatar Olympic Committee are committed to staging a successful Sony Ericsson Championships, and in this regard are upgrading the entire look of the Khalifa International Tennis Complex, including ensuring a world class structure to host the world’s best tennis players. An additional 3500 seats are being built and VIP boxes added on the first rows of the Center Court, allowing the Stadium to comfortably host 7,000 people everyday. The entire complex is undergoing improvements, with the lounges being refurnished and entrances, parking, media, signage in stadium, being completely upgraded.

The Sony Ericsson Championships will be held from the 4th to the 9th of November 2008. The three daily matches will start at 5pm Tuesday through Friday, 1pm on Saturday, 3pm on Sunday and will be played at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex located in front of the Main Post Office at The Corniche.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm so the fat cats have purchased their tickets, but they will be too busy sipping cocktails to see much tennis. in the stands for tennis fans they've sold 20% of tickets, not sounding great to me.
