View Full Version : Players Personalities?

Ok let me ask you guys this:
I went to the US Open this year and spent alot of time at the practice courts and one day Venus came out and talked to what looked like family friends. She stood ten feet from the autographs section by the practice courts. As soon as she was done talking everyone yelled and screamed for venus and what did she do... Walked Away.:( I believe this was after her match that she had won.
In my opinion, if your one of the top players on the tour and you have many many fans shouldn't you pay them back for the support they have given you year after year? I found what she did as arrogant and very rude.
?????
This was just puzzling to me?

I totally agree. None of the top players would be where they are if it wre not for the fans. Venus and Serena are the worst at fan appreciation as far as I know. They only way they sign is if you buy their book. That is crazy and annoying!!

Well actually, in terms of tennis playing, they uld be exactly where they are without fans, because fans do nothing to help their tennis game. But fans also buy the tickets to the tourneys therefore enabling the players to get paid. That said, I'm not really into collecting autographs, I'd much rather be able to take a nice pic of a player I like. But I can understand people would be disappointed if they wanted an autograph and missed out because the player just ignored everyone. Some players just don't like to sign I guess. Plus it depends on the situation - ie when they are being asked to sign. obviously some moments are more appropriate than others.

Venus :hearts: she is the silent type..comes and does her job [gives it a 100% concentration] and goes..

She isnt an attention-whore like Jankovic who even strips in front of the crowd to get attention.

Are they forced to sign autographs? No they aren't. Tennis players have lifes and other things to do sometimes. And those people there I doubt many of them are fans, just because they knew her name doesn't mean they are fans and support her.

I've heard plenty of nice Venus-fan encounters though. RussianBoy had a whole thread about it in Stuttgart, Cam mentioned a nice encounter with Venus, a few other posters have posted about nice enounters with Venus, and I think there's a picture of spiceboy with Venus eating like pigs together. Venus might just prefer one on one encounters as opposed to wild mobs of ebay autograph sellers. Many people can testify to positve encounters.

It's like saying top athletes should be role model's.

Fact is, if they did not have the talent, ability, and worked hard to get
where they are at, none of you would know their names or really give

So that makes someone rotten because they refuse to sign autographs all the time? Venus has had wrist problems in the past, maybe after practicing hard for an hour she doesn't feel like putting her wrist through the strain of rapidly signing a bunch of autographs. There's a reason for everything. And JJ is only nice to fans because she's an attention whore. :tape:

The way they sign autographs now can not put any strain on a wrist all they have to do is scribble and people are happy. She might like attention, so do the Williams sisters. She does not get attention by signing autographs for little kids she gets it for having a personality and Jelena has one.

Sure, it's not their job to sign autographs but it's not my job to say 'hi' and 'thank you' in every day life but I still have to do it. Autograph signing is just something that comes with the territory when you are famous and adulated by millions around the world. Seriously, it doesn't hurt to scribble on a piece of paper or oversized ball for a little kid. Players should be thankful of the fans. If it weren't for millions watching these matches on TV and attending these events, women's tennis would just be another obscure sport no one gave a shit about. Players reach the top of the sport on their own merits but none of them would have the fame and fortune without the interest from the fans.

I'm not attacking Venus here in particular. This is just a singular situation. But I've seen pompous, self-important, aloof tennis players at events who just ignore their fans... and that's just rude! :p

 I usually stay out of the WS v JJ arguments but I just have to know, which players are 'rising up around them'? The WS must feel so suffocated.

As for the OP, I think the sisters are very tunnel-visioned at the slams. I think they are different players then, in temperament and other things. If I went to a slam it would be to see them play. If I wanted to meet them I would try to catch them at a lower event (which I know isn't easy to do), especially a tier II or III event where I expect they would be a lot more relaxed and easy going.

It was a general statement for all players to show how much more depth there is in the tour now, and how the sisters are winning as much as they once were. I didn't say anything about them being suffocated.

I partially agree; I agree that there is much more depth in todays game than there once was but I don't agree that it has resulted in the WS winning less. Venus and Serena don't centre their lives around tennis like they did back then; for them they've learnt that it's not the "be all end all" of their lives which explains their countless outside activities in recent years no matter how much they say that love tennis; which presumably they say because they don't want to get a backlash from the tennis world

Of course, that's just my opinion.

And as for feeling threatened why should we? Venus and Serena are still both winning, and their matches with Jelena are pretty close; more so with Venus, in fact I feel Serena has Jelena figured out.

Any objective WS fans would actually say that it's just a matter of time for Jelena to win her first singles slam and hopefully for her and her fans that's soon; good luck to her.

Yes I agree with you as well to some extent, but back in the day when Serena and Venus were dominating, they weren't losing to players like Srebotnik, Li, Kvitova etc... So I would definitely say that they are not consistently playing up to the same standard as they once were, as well as the fact that the tour has increased in depth.

I don't know why some WS fans might feel threatened, maybe it is because Jelena challenges them, although yes I agree that Serena has somewhat figured Jelena out. But why do WS fans have to constantly mention how amazing Serena and Venus' grand slam results have been and then in the same breath comment on how Jelena will never have any success at the grand slams? Its like they have something to prove and are just attacking Jelena for no reason other than because she is one of the main rivals to the WS.

Anyway, doesn't matter. I'm getting a little off topic here

I don't know why some WS fans bring up the fact Jelena has yet to win a singles slam, I really don't. Maybe they say that to annoy some of Jelena's fans, I've done it to Schorsch as childish and unclassy as it is. But I have said that the forums bring out the worst in people.

Anyway, I wouldn't say the Williams Sisters have had success at every slam and I wouldn't say Jelena has had no success; after all, Serena and Venus lost horrendously at the French Open and Jelena has been amazingly consistent making her first final appearance at the US Open. Facts speak for themselves. In fact, I would have bet my life savings on Jelena making her first final appearance at Roland Garros, clay suits her game more, but I suppose as a developing player she's slowly transitioning into an all court player.

WOW! So off topic......in a bid to get back on topic, at first glance I thought the thread was about players' personality in the sense that they could be introverted/extroverted. :bounce:

I could never understand why a person who isn't a fan of certain player would still seek that player's autograph...
I've read numerous stories of Venus and Serena being really sweet to fans and other times they ignore them.. It's sad if you're a fan especially a kid, but if not, build a bridge and get over it.
I've read numerous stories that Anna C is a bitch but then I've read a couple of positive stories.. Players are human, they are going to have their bad days and their good days..
As for players owing fans something, I ask for quality matches and my favs do that :) It is the player's talent, ability, self belief and hard work that they are successful not because of their fans....

Venus to me has the sweetest personality out of most of the girls I see. She also keeps it real too. Serena on the other hand lol....can be a bitch..but I like that about her..it shows her competitiveness. Jankovic, Pierce and Kuetz seem like they are really laid back and cool. Henin and Ivanovic seem a little too robotic to me....as if they are fake for the cam. Sharapova is OK i guess...she seems to xerox some of the things the Williams sister says. Mauresmo and Hingis are a little on the messy side with their personality...they seem bitter imo. Bartoli and Davenport seem like they are very honest people from their personlity.

Exactly - I agree that player's can have a bad day. But it's still wrong for players to ignore their fans and act all high and mighty. Of course - there's also a time and place where it would be unreasonable to demand a player's time with autograph's etc.

But anyway back to Jelena. In report after report from posters at events who show photographs and say something about the players and their experiences - you get how Jelena does take the time and doesn't just ignore people. So glad to be a fan of hers. So good to have a #1 right now like that.

I have been to the USO the last two years and let me tell you she is awesome when it comes to the fans. Even her hitting partner told us that. Her mom is also the sweetest person.
