Venus wins 25th anniversary title
Venus Williams has won the 25th - and probably last - Zurich Open title. In a high-quality final she beat Flavia Pennetta 7-6(1) 6-2, receiving her trophy in an emotional prize-giving ceremony that concludes a great quarter-century for women's tennis in Zurich.

The first set was very close, neither player breaking serve, and both players hitting some great shots. But once it went into the tiebreak, Williams won the first six points and Pennetta suddenly looked tired.

Though she fought gamely in the second set, the title had effectively been decided, and the American went on to win on her second match point as a Pennetta backhand went wide.

A total of 5785 spectators witnessed the final final of the TENNIS.com Zurich Open in the Hallenstadion. At the closing ceremony, the long-standing tournament director Beat Ritschard, with tears in his eyes, thanked everyone for their support. Williams herself said: 'I hope to have another chance to play in Zurich one day.'

Zurich always was a great event, not only Lindsay won here several times.:hearts:
The atomsphere , the crowd and and and, there are several points, which made this tournament to a greatness.:worship:

Bye Bye Zurich!:wavey:

I didn't know the tourney was leaving. This tourney was always one of my favorites. I still remember when Venus beat Hingis in the final. Forgot the year, I want to say 1999. Vee wore her blue dress and Hingis had on a white and black addidias outfit. I remeber the classic photo of Vee holding up the trophy and Hingis looking pissed off behind her. This was actually my first recorded video of my collection of Venus/Hingis matches. Why no more tourneys in Zurich??

This is... was my favourite indoors tournament. So many great matches and great memories, despite that I'm not the oldest tennis-fan out there. I've never been that sad for a tournament to go.

Its sad that Zurich is going by the way side:sad:. But hopefully in the coming years the WTA will bring it back to the schedule :)

I am sad to see this tournament go. It was always my fave indoor event. It was always very stylish, and my faves (esp. Lindsay) always played well there.

It's sad the WTA, they should have kept Zurich.

I remeber the classic photo of Vee holding up the trophy and Hingis looking pissed off behind her.

As a Venus fan, that picture was worth a thousand words. It is among my numerous screensavers.

It's so sad...I always thought Zurich was a good Tier I (one of the stronger ones) and a send off to major players who didn't qualify for the YEC. This year it downgraded to an average Tier II and next year it'll be gone. So sad.
