First Tier II title since 2004! :hearts: Some great serving, especially those 4 straight aces at 2-1 second set! :worship:

Too bad for Flavia.. her level was great in the first set except the tiebreak, then it seriously dipped in the second.

Awesome. Just awesome.

:spit: on those that think Venus never tries hard/competes at the end of the season.

*Pennetta was so error prone in the second set...but Venus' serving was vintage.

Go on, Venus! Qualify for Doha!

*Penetta will always be a Tier III and below Queen! :worship: to you, Flavia!

Well done Venus :woohoo:

She is far too good a player not to be winning some of these tournaments. She used to rack up loads of Tier I's and II's so it's great to see her win another one.

Great for Venus, she needed this win.match was not really good.Flavia was better in first set but Venus stayed solid.
Second set was kinda ugly.Flavia was too tired, a lot of UE, easy mistakes.Venus's serve was great too.
Not the most impressive title for Venus but it will gave her some confidence and now she's qualified for the YEC, so a lot of positives to take for her.

I've been pretty quiet about Venus this year, but honestly, this Zurich win means so much more to me than her fifth Wimbledon title. Irrational? Sure. But I know she can win there like nobody's business...it'd been so long since she won a Tier I or Tier II title, so so long. :sobbing:

I'm SO proud of her. She played great in the final, she really did, and I'm glad to see she took some pace off her shots to stay in rallies and not make horrendous UEs.

So happy Venus qualified by her own merit to Doha!!!!!!! What a great result, I haven't been this happy about one since the Olympics.

Was waiting for the Madrid final when this match caught my attention. Really high quality first set. Penetta dropped in the 2nd set, but it was a great effort from her. Venus really heated up on her serve, 4 aces in one game.

And how good is Harold? I can't believe he actually sat in the bag until the end of the match. That's up there with Baxter eating the whole wheel of cheese and pooping in the refridgerator.

Yay! Go Venus! I enjoyed that match even though Pennetta was playing a little better in the first set I still felt Venus had the advantage because she was just too solid. Pennetta shouldn't have been so negative in the second set. Venus played great those first three games and there wasn't much Pennetta could've done really.

There was a lot at stake for Venus anyway, a tier II crown, qualification for Doha and salvaging her head to head with Pennetta a little so it was a big win and I'm so glad she did it.

Also finally, FINALLY the malcontents will be able to change their tune from "Venus hasn't won anything above a tier III aside from Wimbledon since 2004" to "Venus has only won one tier II or above title aside from Wimbledon since 2004" and that sounds even more hollow than the old tune!

Only caught the final couple of games, but Venus was Ms consistency and Pennetta was a bit of an UE machine. Go Figure.

Is the surface in Doha pretty slow? If Venus is gonna have a chance to win the YEC this year, she's gonna need a fast surface.

Nice win for Venus - I'm glad to see her get another tournament win outside of Wimby - she more than deserves it. Interesting change in her play as well, definitely hitting less hard, but going for consistency and depth. Venus also effectively using her ability to run down virtually every ball and hit something back that is not a sitter.
Good event for Flavia as well. I'm so happy that she is finally living up to her potential. Hopefully she get a few more big wins on her record and get a top 16 seeding for AO. Shouldn't be a problem for her, and I agree with others who are seeing Top 10 potential here.

Such a funny trophy ceremony, there was a singer singing the song of Tina Turner, simply the best, but she made Venus you're the best of it, Venus dancing and her dad and girlfriend laughing. But the tournament director was crying all the time, cause it was the last time for the Zurich Open. I really feel sad for him, and I hope the tournament will come back, cause it was always one of my favourites. I also like the dog Harold, also during the interview, a lot of questions were about Harold instead of Venus or the match, even the commentator had to laugh about it. Great job V!

i know, i've met him a few times last year and b. ritschard really is such a grounded, wonderful person whose only purpose was to bring great tennis to zürich, not like many of those greedy and emotionless tourna. directors who are only out for the $$$ and glory. he fought so hard to keep the tournament alive and for now it didnt work, but he'll still try even harder for after 2009, thats the kind of man he is. he truly is a rolemodel in that respect. plus as you noticed he gets on well with all the players and thats also a reason why they kept coming back, but obviously at times the time slot of the tourna worked against its deep field that it boasted when firstly publishing the lineup.:sad::sad:

anyhoo, well done bernard and keep fightin :worship:

Well done Venus that was amazing. I saw that her tactic was to just stay consistent and serve big in big points. And boy did she deliver because Flava flavia was playing really well. As Venus said she seems to be listening to Richard's advice rather than going for all out winners and slamming the hell out of the balls!

I think she is looking really good for the YEC and I think that she will get lots of confidence from this. And all those haters can shove it!

Also few words for flavia - playing unbelievable, too bad that she dropped level during tiebreak but she really took it to Venus!Keep on going girl!

I agree. She really has been playing well since Wimbledon despites some bad match-ups and results.

I mean Li, Jelena and Flavia are all HELL for her!

Glad she could get this done!

Great great serving, a lot more patient.

Flavia will ALWAYS be a threat to Venus, i wouldn't be surpised if she won their next match. She just knows Venus's game so well. Thankfully Venus figured her out a bit in the end. The serving didn't hurt either ;)

Venus has much more experience then Penetta the result was expected I just felt Venus is too talented to lose to this player another time in a row. So credit to Venus for winning her 38th WTA tour title. It is also nice to see Venus win Zurich again and win a title higher then a tier III. I think this week will give Venus confidence that she beat Ivanovic a top player and also won the entire event well done.

It was the Swisscom Challenge trophy, Zurich stopped being it in 2005, and became Zurich Open.

now that is the venus i enjoy watching, she put more spin on the ball, used her speed around the court and wasn't trying to slap winners, and what a better player she is for it.
i feel justified in what i said about the ivanovic vs venus match now, having seen how much more enjoyable venus is to watch when she is being controled. such a good match to watch without stupid errors.

flavia played her part to and it was one of the better finals of the year thanks to boths point construction and controled hitting. venus always had the edge with her serve.

well done venus, if she played like that throughtout the year i could be a fan.

Um no, if she played like that throughout the year she'd be getting bitched around by any player playing well. That was like 2nd gear. I agree that at least she wasn't in a minus gear (i.e hitting millions of errors), but if she wants to win YEC she'll have to play better than that.

No. I agree shes been spraying errors all this year but she hasnt been letting the opponent control her the way Flavia was doing up until 6-6. She only won through because of her serve and her mental strength on big points.

And im saying that the top 7 players in the world are ultimatly better than Pennetta so where I agree that this is a smart play to do against the likes of pennetta but she'll have to up her level against the likes of Jankovic and Serena if she wants to beat them. The way she did against Ivanovic yesterday.

she has to be able to adapt her gameplan to each player. she hasn't been doing this all year but today she did and it worked. of course against the best she will have to attack a bit more, but if she can fall back on solid groundstrokes when shes tight or missing then she will be a much more dangerous player for jj and serena.
also there are times when the top players are off (us open qtr final vs serena is an example) where some solid groundstrokes would have got her through that match at the clutch times.
venus could avoid early loses, raise her ranking and ultimately be a better player if she incorperates some of todays play into her game. a venus with solid groundstrokes to fall back on and add into her game, is one of the top 4 favourites for the oz open for me, venus who is going for winners on every ball isn't even in my top 8 to win the oz open.

Flavia's tennis in the first set, look good enough for top 10 to me.

Poor woman didn't have a SINGLE break-point opportunity on the Williams serve, the entire match.

When Venus is serving that well, she is tough to beat.

I think it too, 'coz finally Flavia had a good service on first, bbut above all on 2nd serve...i will remember too all that Fla hasn't given to Vee Break points forr all first set...then:help: but it's normal she felt the tiredness of 4hours playing the day before!

but today Vee has a too strong service...i hope she will win Doha or at least beat JJ:devil:

Hey All,

Wow! Venus's first big win over Martina was at this tourney. It was Swisscom then. Venus was sooooooo over the moon upon finally winning her first tourney over Martina. I'll never forget that match. I think I have it on tape.

I am so happy for Venus winning her second title of the year and the last one in Zurich for a while. What a great ceremony and speech from Venus.

I agree, Flavia played a great first set. She's had two wins here lately over Venus - and had won their last three matches. I'm so happy Venus got revenge in a final and when it really - really matters. Props to Flavia for upping her level and playing great tennis here lately.

Venus played a great tiebreak (7-1) - and of course, it is part of the first set. Plus, she faced no break points. I'd say, she played effectively, with controlled aggression and inspired. Her serve was on - and that really was all she wrote from the tiebreak on. And, she held her own during the groundstroking.

She was also playing for the fond memories she held for that tourney. It will always hold a special place in her heart. And, she mentioned it in her remarks. She said the tournament director was there when she won it at 17 years old - and that they were still here. Wow!

"CONGRATULATIONS VENUS"

Andy.

I wonder how Pennetta will take this. Played out of her mind throughout the 1st set - best tennis I've ever seen from her by far - and still it isn't enough to take the set. Reassured because she really gave her all, and there was nothing else she could have done? Frustrated because she played her best and her best wasn't enough?

I think she will take it well. She seemed positive in her post match interview. Pennetta is having her best year yet, at 26 years old, she has to be feeling very well about her game.

I'm actually really pleased with Vee's performance, from the clips I've seen. She didn't look fatigues but was covering SO much ground. She was constructing points pretty well, showed some variety, and kept the UFEs low. I don't think it was the sub-par performance it could be interpreted as, that was Plan B - tailored to beat Pennetta! Venus can play a more aggressive game, and is showing off more of her variety too. I hope her fitness is good, because I've seen enough from Vee to genuinely believe she can win Doha, she can beat anyone!

BTW commiserations to Flavia Flav. She could eaily be top 10 if she can keep that up, she was playing very aggressively, moves well and if good at net... I wish her all the best for future tournaments and 2009, no reason why she can't break her tier 2 drought, or go after tier 1s no less.
