Tennis: Rising star joins ASB line-up

The ASB Classic women's tennis international has secured its second major competitor for the 2009 tournament.

Rising Danish star Caroline Wozniacki joins tournament draw-card and world number five Elena Dementieva in the field.

The 18-year-old is currently ranked 15th in the world, having started 2008 ranked 64th.

ASB Classic tournament director Brenda Perry says Wozniacki has opted for a change from her usual preparation in Hong Kong.

She says she wanted actual match preparation and to be closer to Australia.

Wozniacki's best 2008 achievements include two fourth round appearances at the Australian and US Opens.

Well done Brenda Perry, nice work :bounce:

would Brisbane not be better for the heat adjustment thing

also Brisbane is in Australia it just seems like it would be more benefitial than Auckland

I prefer Auckland so she can find her groove to kick off the season and avoid a sophomore slump after having a breakout year and for tougher competition she can always enter Sydney

Denmark doesn't really have any ATP players that could play Hopman Cup along side Caro.

Great idea for Caro to play this event. She'll most likely be seeded quite highly I believe :)

Auckland is in NZ, and it's not as hot as Australia there usually. It's a little bit cooler (approx 5 degrees on avg). But I think it's a good choice nonetheless. :)

Apart from the heat adjustment (and Brisbane has a different heat than Melb anyway - it's generally alot more humid up there as it's "wet season" in the north of Oz over our summer), why would Brisbane be more beneficial? Auckland has a more similar heat to Melb, even if it's a bit cooler, and it's only 3.5 hrs flying from Auckland to Melb. It's over 2 from Melb to Brisbane anyway. Brisbane is also 1 hour behind Melb, so the time difference between Auckland/Brisbane and Melb isn't that big either.
