I watched most of that last set. Those first three match points were nerve wracking! Ivanovic did well to hold with a little help from the net. Thankfully Venus' serve saw her through. I think Ivanovic only won three points on Venus' (1st) serve in the last set but Venus was putting the pressure on Ivanovic's serve.

Rest up for the final Venus and take revenge on Pennetta!

Credit to both ladies for giving us a highly entertaining match :hatoff:

Venus served very well in the last two sets, closing out the match in clinical fashion. Her movement was excellent, which was pleasing to see after her somewhat sluggish QF performance.

I hope Ana takes away some positives from this; she's playing good tennis again, and showed qualities of a true champion when she saved the three set points in the 2nd set, and then digging herself out of a 0-40 hole in the final set to force Venus to serve it out.

Very positive match from both:)
Ana finished the match very well, the way she saved those 3 mps was really top class-Ana from early 2008, and she fought really well throughout the match!

Venus, what an improvement from her recent matches!! She was consistent, after that first set disaster in which she blew a big lead, she served really consistently and the backhand was on fire, great to see her back at a very high level:D Now let's see if she learned something from her last defeats to Pennetta, very intriguing match:) Venus could win this title for the second time after 1999 (where she beat Hingis in the final:eek: )

Best match Ivanovic has played in a while, her serve and forehand were good if a bit inconsistent, the backhand needs some work though still it looks like she may be working her way back into form.
Venus played well, her groundstrokes were a bit off at times but her serve was great in the third set, good luck in the final:yeah:

Very happy for Venus. Hopefully she wins the title now so people will STFU saying she's not even a top 20 player off grass.

Only caught the 3rd set of the match. From what I saw, Ivanovic was playing pretty poorly. Her drive BH was being made about 1 in 10 times. ROS was abysmal. It wasn't just the fact that she couldn't deal with any of Venus's 1st serve bombs, but practically all the risks she was taking on Venus's 2nd serve were just not coming off.

Venus upped her ground-game from yesterdays match. Match-up probably. Ivanovic's hard, flat ball suits her a helluva lot better than Schiavone's loopy topspins. Certainly seemed intent on moving Ivanovic from L-R, moving in behind defensive floaters. Couldn't get in as much as she wanted with Ivanovic taking such generous cuts off pretty much everything.

I'm guessing Venus wins tomorrow, if she serves well.

Bloody brilliant tennis is all I have to say! Congrats to V. She was there when it counted!

Ana will be hurt by this. She knows she could have won this match. You could tell by the look on her face when she was walking off the court. I really enjoyed what I saw on the court from her today. She showd grit and she had the fight that was lacking in her past matches. I saw some fist pumping and Ajde'ing and I liked it:hearts:

I'm very very proud of Ana, more than I can put into words. She showed the mark of a true champion serving to stay in the second set and the match from 0-40 down, 1st time: 2nd serve ace, forehand winner, ace, service winner, UE from Venus to hold; 2nd time: forehand winner, 2nd serve service winner, volley winner, forehand winner, volley winner to hold. Well done. :worship:

Backhand still needs a lot of work; was missing a bit too much at times. But she fought very hard and stayed with Venus until 3-3 in the final set. I have nothing but positives from this match and I'm very optimistic about Linz. She's definitely playing like a lower top 10 player right now. Very gutsy as well. :yeah:

Venus played very well except the choke in the first set; serve was absolutely untouchable in the 3rd set and hitting with more pace than against Fran. No more Camille Pin-esque tennis from Venus. :yeah: Good luck against Pennetta; it'll be very tough. :scared:

He is kinda right though, the serve was the key factor today.
In the first set, Venus' first serve was below 50% and she lost it, but when her serve was on she won the next 2 sets and the match.

Ana  Kinda fell away by the end, all credit to Venus. Very entertaining and high quality match. First higher tier singles final outside of Wimbledon since Stanford 2005. Despite the bad record against Flavia, she will go in as favourite for tommorow as it is such a huge match.

I am happy with the week Ana has had. It's been a long slump since RG. Hoping for a similar run next week in Linz and that she can end the year on a high in Doha. She is far too good to be losing early at these tournaments.

I think she only lost about 2 points on serve in the 3rd set:hearts:he might be right about this particular match, but to say that Venus does not have a top ten ground game, defensive play, movement and athleticism to compete in the top ten is ridiculous. of course, her serves helps her get out of trouble. but you can say that about Serena, Maria, Ana and all other players in the top ten. If Serena didn't have her serve, would she be in the top ten. NOT. If Maria, with her sluggish movement, didn't have a good serve, can we say top 30.

Shocking day for best 2008 players... Nadal, Ivanovic and Federer all lose in tight three-setters :eek::eek:.

Atleast Ana shows her best tennis since Roland Garros and if improvment continue she will be ready for Doha.

Ana also dont have luck b/c 4 years in the row Venus not take seriously tier-I and tier-II events... but now finaly decide to win one. Actualy Venus whole career never played seriously final part of season (all tournaments after US Open) so this Zurich will be her 1st career title in that period since 2000!

Oh thank god for another tier 2 final for Vee! It's been so long:worship::lol:

I picked it up at 4-6 5-2 and from then on Vee played a great match i thought. Nothing special off the ground, but her serving was just unplayable in that third set. Those 4 serves to finish the match- PEAK VENUS!:hearts::worship:

Ivanovic was hitting form however that she hasnt shown since winning the French really. Her first % was ridiculously good and she was trying her best to be as pro-active as possible, trying to take the net away from Venus etc. Backhand needs tons of work though, fairly redundant for the majority of the match, lacking all the intricacies in the footwork to drive through the shot. Still played great though, and it brought out a terrific effort from Venus to finish her off. The standard generally was pretty good.

Go Venus!:bounce:

Good for venus to finally reach a final outside of Wimbledon. She had a good draw and her only serious opponent is a very good match-up for her.She wasn't exceptionnal but it was good enough to beat Ana today.
Interesting final tomorrow against Pennetta.Either she gets some revenge or she becomes Flavia's bitch.

Hard luck Ana, but you're moving in the right direction, you're still the best Serb. Take the form into the YEC and do damage, against anyone other than a WS!

Third top 5 win I think of the year for Venus, a better number than some other folks ranked above her. 5-1 against Ivanovic, not many players have that either. A very good win. Now please perform tomorrow, take Flavia Flav out in 2 quick ones! That's how it should be!

Spot-on!

The ballbashing looks good when it“s on.But it can“t be on all the time, Ana rushed so much :o, she was like a dumbo at times, she hit some nice slices :yeah: but this is far from the Ivanovic which we saw the first half of the year. She was totally impatient today, rushing everything. Understand that you have to get the first hit against Vee and try to start dictating but not at any cost any time...

She absolutely threw her service game away at 3-4 or 3-3 third set, that was terible, she fought back but was too late, shouldn“t have lost her service before..

Venus plays well, her serve and volleys are fabulous.

btw.to some poster, when I said she wouldn“t be top 10 these days, I meant these days, like last three weeks or simply this indoor season, the poster suddenly turned it into all time. and to another one, Elena“s serve“s improved enough ;)

i realy didn't like this match. i just cant stand slap tennis. they were both just trying to hit the ball so hard, it just results in a super quick point ending with either an error or winner. theres was no building of rallies nothing i could personaly 'get into'. they both have dodgy technique to add to it.

ana looked her totaly nervous self as usual going for some stupid shots and venus's game was its usual hit or miss.

Amaze!! The little bit I saw she was much more aggressive. I think she gives away games to easily sometimes w/ 4 successive errors but at least she was being aggressive while doing so.

Ivanovic :hearts: Played well from what I saw. Hitting her serve well. Her forehand isn't on point yet but was decent. One thing though Ana, when your ball toss is flying horizontally it might be a good idea to catch it and start over.
Hopefully she'll be back in full force at YEC if not then, then by AO.

Just because Ana was in a recent slump does not mean she isn't one of the best players of 08 she made two slam finals and won one for Christ sakes. She has the Semis at Sidney, Qf in Dubai, won IW, Semi in Berlin, QF in Bejing, and Semi in Zurich.

I'm not denying that she isn't in her best form since RG (partly to do with injury) But the only other player to acomplish more than her in 2008 is Serena. I know the JJ'ers will say JJ has won more titles but she only made one slam final and she didn't even win it.

As far as I'm concerned Ana is one of the best in 08 (So is Serena, JJ, Dinara, and Elena)

Of course she is, it's not even questionable and certainly not a laughable claim. The only players who one could say has done better this year are Serena and Jelena, and still Ana is the one with the slam not Jelena.

Ana's backhand is complete shit, really. That's all what it came down to. Sometimes it seemed she was trying to hit a home run with it, than actually hitting the ball in court.

I'm puzzled though why she manages to bring such a high level when she's behind, but otherwise stinks. It all must be in the head, cause surely it's no coincidence how she was able to pull herself of 0-40, 15-40 games with such unbelievable tennis. She needs to learn to replicate that sort of performance in other situations.

i realy didn't like this match. i just cant stand slap tennis. they were both just trying to hit the ball so hard, it just results in a super quick point ending with either an error or winner. theres was no building of rallies nothing i could personaly 'get into'. they both have dodgy technique to add to it.

ana looked her totaly nervous self as usual going for some stupid shots and venus's game was its usual hit or miss.

is this what womens tennis has come to?

Pure strike-first-or-die, big serves + even bigger returns tennis has its fans, but I admit most people won't appreciate it. Few people liked this year's AO final, for instance, even though I didn't feel it was that badly played for a match of its type.

Venus used to be the worst possible matchup for Ivanovic, and to an extent still is.

Ivanovic served well, excellently even in decisive points. Which is amazing considering how lazy and rudimentary her service motion is, and how erratic her toss can be (those tosses to the right when serving to the deuce court :tape: ). In terms of junk, volleys and touch shots she was at her best, but her glaring shortcomings in high-intensity, high-pace rallies were once more apparent. I lost count of how many BHs she dumped into the bottom of the net because she was forced to hit them when out of position, and/or with her feet/body not set up properly. Also gave away many free points with ROS errors, but the ultra-aggressive ROS really is the core of her game.

Ivanovic plays some of the most brainless tennis imaginable, but at least she has learned to use her serve to get a return to her FH, and time and again she used a basic serve + FH DTL combo to dig herself out of trouble. Venus seemed unable to shift the direction of the ball when returning (and was taken by surprise by Ivanovic's sidewinders much more often than she should). I really can't understand why she sticks to her kamikaze ROS when it obviously no longer works against even halfway decent servers.

Anyway, Venus was a bit more consistent off the ground than against Alona B. and Schiavone (though it would be hard to be any more erratic than she was in those matches), and above all her serve didn't desert her when it mattered (3rd set), that being the main reason why she won - in baseline rallies, she was often overpowered by Ivanovic.

That's an interesting analisis of the match. I have to say I'm a fan of the amazing winner-terrible unforced error tennis, because the shotmaking can be truly spectacular. I also admire the defending game or the point construction of some players... but I miss the amazing winner everytime. I can be alone on this one though.. I don't know.. the important thing is always to enjoy the tennis.

I think Ana's main problem with her backhand is the sloppy footwork. Her BH is definitely not a natural shot for her, and she tends to use her right hand to lead it, which just makes a two hander even more awkward. And if she can't get her footwork together she just can't hit a proper shot. She really needs to work on that. I think her backhand has improved though, so I have hope that it will continue to improve.

I also think she really needs to work on her return of serve.. she needs to realize that she doesn't have to go for broke everytime. She can sometimes just block it back, especially when facing someone like Venus, who has such a great serve.

And I agree with you.. in the end it all came down to one bad service game played by Ana and some awesome serving by Venus. Even though I really wanted Ana to win this one, it was nice to see that Venus could control her serve and make it work in a third set. Against Jankovic in Stuttgart and Penetta in Moscow her serve totally deserted her in the third set and she had to play a lot with her second serve, which is highly attackable.

I was quite pleased with Ana's net play. She has improved so much at the net, and showed some nice volleys and a lot of touch.
