Oh really? thanks. lol

She got one of the worst places as an unseeded player, Vesnina - Makarova play each other while Maria gets Vera, Maria never does well in Moscow so of course she has to play a fellow Russian. :(

Maria won only a few games against Zvonareva in the past. Never does well in Moscow and Vera is also really strong at the moment.
What will Murphy say about this?

We can't expect anything here. I just hope she can play well and then later see the result.

Good luck!

Who has Zvonareva beaten since the Prague Open at the end of Apirl? Medina Garrigues and Jie Zheng. I don't see any world beaters though. She's only had one good tournament since then in Guangzhou. This year she's lost to Erakovic, Tanasugarn, Stosur, Razzano and Peribiynis(?) at the USO.

She won Guangzhou without much problems. In Stuttgart she lost only 2 games against Bartoli.
2 tough matches against Jankovic. It's just not only the results, but Vera is also playing well.

I have never seen Vera play as well as she does right now. Seems to be much better physically. So I think Maria actually got the worst possible draw here...

So this is a tremendous challenge for Maria. It will be interesting, though, to see how well she is able to hold her own against a top player at this moment. After all, Maria has ambitions to become as good as Vera is now.

Good luck to Maria anyway

Maria played a really good match. She wasn't too far especially on the 1st set.She had a lot of GP at 1-1 on her serve but she had been broken and had some chances to break back right after but she didn't manage to break back after a long game.

On the 2nd set,she was double broken and broke back once but Vera managed to serve well at the end....

Maria made some amazing shots and great points. She came to the net quite often and her backhand was really efficient today.I think that's a positive match because Vera is in good form and with more luck,Maria could have jeopardized her even more. For those who wanna see the match, Nikkie gave the link : http://video.sportbox.ru/VidySporta/Tennis/v_20081007112000_mezhdunarodnyjturnirkubokkremla2

Remember that it's 11 AM Russian time. That's 12 PM in UK and 1 PM where I live. So not that strange.

Looking at the score, the stats and this thread it seems that Maria is making steps forward since the US Open.
Vera won only 4 points more than her. That just says she was better than Maria at the important points.

If she can avoid Jelena, Ana, Venus, Nadia, Aga, Viktoria and Caroline in the first 2 rounds of Zurich. Then I'm really confident.
Chakvetadze, Cornet or Schiavone would be a good draw.

I'm glad our girl is doing better.
I'll try to support her as much as possible in Zurich.
Berlin was great, but Rosmalen was a tough loss.

HowardH
Oct 7th, 2008, 05:58 PM
We all knew Maria had a very tough match on her hands against Vera, who has been playing so well. Maria was hitting the ball harder than normal- basically as hard as she can hit. I think she played very well. Vera had to work hard. I don't think Vera played as well as she did the last two tournaments, which helped Maria a little. Her groundstrokes looked better than normal. She more or less needed to do that to stay near Vera. She was doing ok in the rallies, but when she had easier balls she tended to either not take the opportunity or to make an error, whereas if Vera got an easy ball she would normally hit a good attacking shot. It was also difficult for Maria to not miss eventually when she was hitting at the same kind of pace that Vera hits at, because it's harder than her normal pace. Sometimes Maria would hit several attacking shots in a row without hurting Vera enough, then Vera would counterattack and Maria would tend to miss then. You can still see it at http://video.sportbox.ru/VidySporta/Tennis/v_20081007112000_mezhdunarodnyjturnirkubokkremla2 .

Nikkiri - I think there is quite a lot of general frustration that Makiri has not made clear progress this year. I know she has won tournaments but there are not many big matches that we can look back on with pleasure. Great job girls against 2 Russians:worship:

Oh,i'd love to see Masha with Ana in doubles again, well, they would be opponents but it would remind us some good memories! But Ana and Francesca need to beat Huber/Black before:o

Why was Maria hitting the ball a lot harder than usual?

Since Maria was up against a supposedly better and more solid player than herself, she had to choose an aggressive and more risky game plan than Vera, like hitting the ball harder, going for shots closer to the lines etc. Playing it safe only works in favor of the solid player.

A solid player wins a lot of points just by getting the ball safely back in play, leaving their lower-ranked opponents another chance to make an "unforced" error.

Many times Maria made attacking shots that would have been plenty good enough to win the point, against all but a few opponents. Vera not only returned the shots, but often managed to neutralize Maria's attack, too, eventually winning the point, as was pointed out in an earlier post.

If you saw Vera's recent matches against JJ, the roles were reversed. Then Vera had to be more aggressive (which she was), and JJ barely survived.

These girls aren't silly blondes, they know perfectly well what they're doing. And they're quite successful at it, too.

Also, Maria is a naturally aggressive player. She is visibly uncomfortable defending. Although Maria doesn't have as much raw power as many other top players, when she is in form she is still extremely dangerous when she gets an easy ball back because of her good precision and ability to find good angles.

Against a top player, she must of course make sure she gets to play her strengths and avoid her weaknesses. And that calls for an aggressive game plan, too.

It's just such pity that on a day when Maria's game worked so well, she had to pick a fight with the wrong person. :awww:

Maria & Flavia make a really good team :bigclap:

Maria's singles performance was promising, just hope the draws will be better in Zurich and Linz.

Vera just nuked Daniela, winning 6-1 6-0.

This puts Maria's draw and match in a little perspective.

That's what some of us said after the match,Vera is playing her best tennis so far in her career and Maria was close to her. So,i think that it's very positive for the next weeks...

You don't have to be optimistic to find something good in a bad situation.

That's just not wanting her to drive you completely insane.

What a beatdown Makiri and Flavia got. It was a nice run while it lasted. Now they need to figure out how to play against the elite teams like Black and Huber.

Well Flavia blew her singles match earlier :( and Black/Huber had a tough match in the last round, they obviously stepped it up in the SF as #1s would do. Disappointing but not too surprising.
