Welcome to Zurich! The 68th tournament of the Tennis Tipping season. Read the rules and sign-up information and then decide to join!

Playing the game is simple:
- Before the tournament starts the qualifying and the main draw are made.
- If you're in the qualifying you send in your pick of day 1 matches in a PM to the person running the tournament. You also send the exact score of the chosen matches by the person running the tournament as a tie-breaker. There will be two qualifying rounds for singles held on Sunday and Monday. Qualifying rounds for doubles are on Monday and Tuesday.
- Main draw singles starts on Tuesday, while the doubles event starts on Wednesday. All qualifiers and players directly into the main draw send their picks and the exact score of the tie-breaker scores to the person running the game. Set ratios are needed if there are less than 8 matches. This will be indicated in the order of play.
- Results will be posted as soon as possible. Previews are given when possible.
- You have to send your picks, before the first match of the day starts, if you send your picks late, you will be replaced by an alternate. In later rounds only matches not played will be counted.
- If a player doesn't not send picks in the first round of a tournament by the start of play, then a LL is replacing him in the draw (this does not apply in later rounds)
- A match will not count in case of a retirement, withdrawal, if a player is defaulted or any late schedule changes
- You get a point for each correctly predicted winner.
- Notify me if you committed but do not see your name on the entry list after the commitments close. All picks should be sent by PM, in case if the board is down for more than 1 day, the tournament will be cancelled.

ITF tournaments also get points. So they are not just for fun. ;)

There will be an ITF in Ortisei in the same week.

I might extend the draw size of the qualifying tournament, but I also know peeople hate three qualifying rounds. I will decide sometime tomorrow or Wednesday. People need to have time to adjust to the changes.

I see your point, but I really can't force anyone to play ITF. I see you asked the opinion of the board and that seems ok to do. Perhaps they know a way to deal with the matter. Right now my concern is to have as many people enter the tournament they want to enter. I am sorry if that affects you.

if you "cant force" then whats the point of having an ITF scheduled with a manager there and some players committing?

so.. your point is "i want everyone to have a chance" and it is nice.. but, that is not Tennis and that is not TT!!! TT is not about everyone playing the tournaments they want.. for christ sake.. TT is more than that.. you re emuling a tennis player!! You gotta build uip ranking playing tournaments you sometimes dont like to.. that makes the tour much more attractive.. work your a$$ off to get where you want to. This is just: "lets enhance the draw of a Tier tournament, lets mutilate a tournament because I want more players playing"..

I believe the idea of tennis (and TT) is to play a tournament, build up your ranking, so you can play the tournaments you really want to play..

by this , you re making the idea of having an ITF pointless.. with this filosophy throw away all tournaments that dont give as much points and prestige as the bigger ones and just do 1 tournament a week because players are lazy and dont want to do what they have to: play ITFs

when i started WTAw TT..I had to play challengers, I even had to play ITFs qualies.. singles and doubles.. this is a COMPLETE lack of respect to me..

I dont care if tons of people want to commit to the bigger tournament, they should be left without playing because they re greedy, they should be humble enough to go, do the ITF thing, win some points and next year be back and play here if they want to.. just like I did during the first half of the season

this is a complete lack of respect to players who work hard to build up your ranks. James, this is not a personal attack to you ( and neither to rui, :rolls: which seemed like it today :tape:)

With my deepest respect i do have for you, as one of the "best" WTAw TT figures I have.. It is not your call to decide what size a tournament has. It is up to the TT board. If they want a 64 player draw over a 32 real tennis draw, they should announce it, for e.g. cos thats why we have a board. It is not in the interest of a manager to change the current draw of a TT tournament, it must be done by the board.

A manager is here to manage a tournament. and the way of managing is doing in the standart way. We dont want "Tokyo" to repeat. I believe it was said back then "stick to the standart thing".. Denijs, with all his best will did a weird 26 draw,.. i should have made the protest back then but i didnt want to look like if i was a sore loser or anything. Truth is.. I deserved a MD draw spot, cos I do,.. those are the ways tournaments are.

Now.. this is happening again?.. Why do I have to give up things I dont have to? TT is to be done one way, a tournament has to be done exactly in the way a standart tournament is.. not under the interpretation of the manager, im sure you have the nicest intentions, but, imagine a Tier II organization in real life doing a 22 main draw and enhancing the qualy draw just because they want more players and to sell more tickets? that would be a joke of a tournament..

TT tries to emule real tennis.. i just dont find it fair, not to the extra 8 who play qualy either.. they know there is a 16 qualy draw, if they still want to sign up, they re doing it because they re lazy enough not to play an ITF in which there are at least 11 main draw spots.. and there could even be 16 qualy spots too.. there is room enough for everyone to play..

James
Oct 12th, 2008, 06:49 AM
I can assure you people would not like it, if they were forced to play elsewhere. That has never been the task of a manager on here. I made a choice to try and let people play here as they wanted. It's the best I can do. It's the best Denijs could do last week as well. It's up to the board to propose changes to deal with the growing number of players.

I believe you don't mean this to be a personal attack, so I won't take it as one. I have done everything I could do though to get people to consider playing Ortisei, including asking people that signed up for both to made a choice. If they don't do so, I have nothing left than to accomodate the best way possible the number of people wanting to play here. Managers are not dictators.

Increasing the qualie draw from 16 to 24 players is not "making everyone play this event", what's more you say that we sgould stick with tha WTA tournament as we do in general, but you do not say that there are 32 players QD, but in TT there were alwyas only 2 rounds of qualies as a rule and we're not changing it, don't you see.
I can assure you that there would be some changes made by the board after this season ends and there's alraedy a list of points to discuss, what's imoportant there probably won't be a change in tournaments size :wavey:

You can always posts your thoughts or doubts in the TT Board thread ;) It will be considered by us, I can tell you that, but maybe it's not the best place here, as it being discussed will make harder for players to find importatnt posts in the thread, so you're invited to post your ideas directly to The Board :wavey:

Increasing the qualie draw from 16 to 24 players is not "making everyone play this event", what's more you say that we sgould stick with tha WTA tournament as we do in general, but you do not say that there are 32 players QD, but in TT there were alwyas only 2 rounds of qualies as a rule and we're not changing it, don't you see.
I can assure you that there would be some changes made by the board after this season ends and there's alraedy a list of points to discuss, what's imoportant there probably won't be a change in tournaments size :wavey:

You can always posts your thoughts or doubts in the TT Board thread ;) It will be considered by us, I can tell you that, but maybe it's not the best place here, as it being discussed will make harder for players to find importatnt posts in the thread, so you're invited to post your ideas directly to The Board :wavey:

 a couple of hours before posting here, i did post 3 posts in the TT rules and discussion thread.. but you seem to havent read it then  (in fact i suspect nobody did cos there wasnt any reply ) therefore i did the right thing in posting, hours later, here, cos at least you got to read it here and i actually draw some attention :o :rolls: :p

How is it bigger? The real qualy draw has 32 spots, in this TT event there are only 26 spots.

Daily recap - Day 1 (Sunday)

* First day of action here in Zurich brought us the start of singles qualifying. A surprising five of scheduled players did not put in an appearance. All the more lucky for the alternates. Libre83 and Poiree made good use of their chance to play by winning too. Certainly for Poiree this must have been a surprise. Only 12th alt, but still in due to everyone before her not sending in. Good chance for her to get some much needed ranking points.
* Top seed of qualifying FiBeR was not a happy camper, due to the current draw size, which saw him just lose out on the main draw. He lost to fellow Argentinian Diego36arg. His doubles partner Hotzenplotz followed up with a loss of his own, so the pair can concentrate on doubles. With a Moscow title just completed, much can be expected. Things certainly sparkle when these two get together.
* Winning the event you run is possible as Denijs demonstrated in Moscow. James was not so lucky, running into a loss against spirited Belgian Hantu, whose pick of Kvitova sealed the win.
* Bad luck for Gavnich77. He had one of the best scores of the day (7 points). He unfortunately played an opponent who scored just as well and did better on the TB.
* Seeds were not in full swing today. Out of 12 seeds, three did not show up and six lost their match. Dementieva_Dude, Forza Pennetta and Fencer were the only ones to survive. Looks like there is quality in the draw or is it the long season that is wearing some players out?
* Best scores of the day was 7 points. Obvious missed picks were Arvidsson and Niculescu. Nobody even dared go that way. Overall picks were often identical, with the odd Parmentier or Rezai thrown in. The match between Kvitova and Pironkova was mostly the one to make a difference.

Daily recap - Day 2

* Not a day for huge points it seems, as several players long saw a menacing zero behind their name, even if the number of matches played kept growing. Libre83 was eventually the only one to keep the zero in the end, earning him the bad luck of the day award. Brie Whitehead could not have done a bagel job better. As a result, he finds himself at the bottom of the lucky loser list. Positive as ever, he was one of the first to send in for tomorrow, so like Brie he is not likely to quit. Most likely doubles partner Denijs will force him out on the practice courts tomorrow, to improve his form for doubles.
* Players like Groenefeld, Hantuchova, Mauresmo, Cornet, K. Bondarenko and Sugiyama might be a solid choice at times, but today they certainly were the cause of many picks gone wrong. Anna-Lena and Kateryna were the ones to let everyone down. Even the best players on the day got that pick wrong.
* Best player of the day was Geo Tennis Fan in doubles qualifying. He put in a solid 5 points performance, only missing Anna-Lena and Kateryna as everyone did. His partner Rik. was less than stellar though only scoring a one. Here one sees that coordination between doubles partners can help one out at times. Their opponents Capriati Rules and Penguinbw 22 did not manage to do well either. In fact Geo Tennis Fan scored enough to win by himself.
* The majority of seeds in singles qualifying managed to go through. There were only three left though, with Forza Pennetta and Fencer scoring wins. Dementieva_Dude fell at the last hurdle against Hantu, who never believed he could win. Yet he still did, although he did not in doubles. That would be where Dementieva_Dude can still get his chance though.
* Alternate Poiree continued her fine form. Being ranked only 160, she is not afraid of those ranked higher. Smokovec was the next scalp claimed on the way to the main draw. It promises for tomorrow and the future in Tennis Tipping. The decision to stay on here, despite a low ranking, did pay off.
* In doubles qualify a veritable seed massacre happened. Three of four seeded teams lost, including Hotel/ Xiu ZhiFu, IceHock/ Tzar and Fencer/ Hantu. IceHock/Tzar started an impressive comeback after being two points down early on. It was Mauresmo who failed the completion of the last minute pursuit, sending alts Ekin and Lovehotel a round up.

So, if Radwanska wins in 2, I win, if in 3, Nikko wins, but what if she loses?

So, if Radwanska wins in 2, I win, if in 3, Nikko wins, but what if she loses?

Correct. If she loses, your set ratios are equal. We then head for TB1. You would win in that case (first set right).

Hmm, I should just default you both for making it so damn hard. ;)

Should Radwanska lose, I will have no TB's left and will have to resort to the old method of who gave more games to the winner. Eventually that would lead to you giving more games to Kvitova on TB3.

Daily recap - Day 3

* It is clearly visible the season is coming to an end. Not only the WTA stars are tired, but so are the TT divas. Scores were at 3 points maximum and some players feared another bagel day. SodaPop, Shuai.P and Xiu ZhiFu only barely avoided the zero thanks to Radwanska. Capriati Rules did not have Radwanska, but had Bartoli to save him.
* Titanic struggle indeed as Meelis and In The Zone were so close together, it took seven seas to hit an iceberg somewhere. Eventually it was In the Zone's ship that sank. Whether he will be king of the world again in doubles (with or without Leonardo Dicaprio) remains to be seen tomorrow.
* It was the day of the wild choices it seems, which saw Savestheday91 and MH0861 thrive naturally. Chakvetadze and Wozniacki both buckled under the pressure, despite many choosing them. Strangely enough nobody expected Schnyder's demise, even with her being a known basket case at times. Even better were those that predicted Li to lose to Medina. Only a few got that one right, so credit to Ruisantos and Slowvin for daring it.
* The top 4 seeds went ahead, so no seed massacre today. It was mainly the lower seeds not handling the pressure well. Aleksz and Slokid lost their respective ties. Moscow winner Denijs is still going though. Maybe he will do a Jankovic and win more weeks in a row.
* The third quarter was already labeled a qualifier bonanza earlier, with 4 of 6 qualifiers playing there. It turned out more like a qualifier graveyard with only Diego36arg surviving there. He had the luck he was playing another qualifier. It brought the run of Poiree to an end, but she was lucky to get in after all and gain crucial ranking points. The other two qualifiers Forza Pennetta and Fencer made it through safely, with Forza no doubt increasing his love for Francesca as she was the key to his win.
* Doubles qualifying was not a success for the Chinese teams, as both lost. However alternates Canuck and Drake1980 overcame earlier troubles of being left out of the draw by qualifying. Extra ranking points to them at least. Drake added a singles win to make the Canadian joy even bigger.

I will post the differences after 14.00 CET. I don't know if I will be able to place them right away.

All picks are in, but one. The only picks missing are those of Ivanovicfan!!!!. If they are not received in time, the doubles team will be replaced by first lucky losers Ekin and Lovehotel. They have both sent picks.
