I was so sure Zheng would tank this that I put money on Pavlyuchenkova. :p

I really don't know what Zheng was doing here after successful play in China. She is not even in the doubles draw and her and Yan need to get some points if they want to qualify for YEC.

they'll only play doubles together again at G.S tournaments and Tier 1 tournaments in 2009. :p

So Zheng wants to focus on singles now just like Na Li? Or was there a fight between them? :p

Who will partner Yan then in regular doubles? Sun? Peng?

Wow, didn't see this coming.

I am completely surprised too, especially by the proportions of the defeat. Looks to me to be the result of: 1) tiredness, 2) underestimation of Павлюченкова who hasn't impressed this season.

Love to see Pavlyuchenkova go this the distance this tournament but she has only gotten past the second round twice in WTA play. (she has fared better at the Challenger level)

Still, she has improved volumes this year and I think she is gonna be a big factor on the tour in the next few years.

Pavlyuchenkova was #286 at the start of the year and she is now #76; with this victory she will probably enter the top 70. She is the fastest riser this year out of everyone in the top 100. It's pretty impressive.

I was just about to go find how much she has risen in the rankings this year at such a young age to show Malva, but you did it for me. ;)

Well done Nastya, it's a good win whether Zheng tanked or not.

Me too!
How can you say she has not been impressive when she qualified for Wimbledon and then beat Cornet and Na Li before losing in the third round to A Radwanska? In fact she has won rounds in the main draws of her last three slams which is amazing for a main tour rookie.

She had a couple of ropey results the last two events but has clearly bounced back in style. Keep it going!

My perception has been colored by two factors:

1) Pavlyuchenkova had a really great Junior career with her first Junior grand slam going back to January 2006; I remember people saying she was the next big thing, and that was already long ago. What was her ranking at the start of the year is not very relevant for a top Junior entering the WTA tour. She was not just another lowly contender but somebody who was showing a lot of promise and highly praised by many. And the point differences are relatively small in those lowly regions of the ranking scale. Thus, I personally was expecting a lot from her.

2) Each time I was paying attention to her this year, with thee exception of the first two rounds at Wimbledon, she was losing. And at Wimbledon, after having been initially impressed by her beating Cornet and Li Na, I was expecting a lot more from her in the match against Radwańska. I watched the match with full attention, and frankly felt disappointed: she went down meekly without offering any challenge to Radwańska who didn't have to put much effort to beat Anastasia. In short: a match without history.

not really suprising for me, Jie should better rest now, she shouldn't even bother to play in this tournament after a good run in Beijing ;)

First piece of useful information.

Another would be from somebody who actually saw the match.

I thought it was because Zheng didn't play enough Tier III tournaments?
Like Li Na will have to play Luxembourg later this year.

Way to go Nastya, you sound like a great player~

I then realize Zheng was ranked out of 200 in the beginning of the year...she shouldn't have had any committment.

Well from what I have heard from Japanese posters in Nishikori's forum on MTF, these smaller indoor courts they have been forced to use because of the rain have very few/no seats for spectators. It wouldn't surprise me if no one, or at most very few people saw this match.

yes, she said shes still young and wants to achieve more in Singles. Also, CTA allowed zheng and yan to have their own schedules from now on until london OG as they completed the mission to be at the podium to receive the bronze medals at OG :o

they'll play doubles with foreign players.
