I have been following tennis for around 5 years now, and I was always curious to the answer to this question, I hope nobody will be offended if I ask? :)

Why did the Williams sisters vow to never return to IW, and what exactly happened there?

Thank you! :wavey:

Why did the Williams sisters vow to never return to IW, and what exactly happened there?Venus withdrew with an injury. The next day, the crowd booed Serena. Venus and Serena felt their treatment there was so bad, they decided to never play there again.

Venus withdrew five minutes before they were supposed to go out on court. It was controversial because Venus and Serena's meetings were 'suspicious' back then, and Venus dominated Dementieva in her quarterfinal match.

Venus beat her 6-0 6-3, and then claimed she was injured.

I never tire of this topic because I am so proud of Venus & Serena for sticking with what they believe in. The crowd didn't just boo them but there were racial slurs as well. Venus was in the stands & heard it.

Serena followed this up a couple of years ago in Miami as this guy racially heckled her by telling the umpire he needs to be removed because "As an African-American, I'm not going to stand for it." Go 'head Serena wit' yo bad self.

In a nutshell. The crowd crucified Serena because Venus kicked Elena Dementieva's ass. Elena was bitter about her defeat and suggested that Richard would decide who would win when Venus and Serena played each other in the next round. Well, Venus got injured during the match with Dementieva, but still pulled out the win. Venus was going to play the match against Serena while injured simply for the fans sake only and prolonged her withdrawal, but finally realized she couldn't play and had to withdraw minutes before the match causing Serena to get a walkover into the final. Well, here come the biggest injustice and the reason they don't play there. The crowd booed Serena mercilessly for no reason. Then booed Venus and Richard when they came down the stairs. There are those who claim the crowd booed them because a tabloid had printed a story after they played each other at 2000 Wimbledon saying Richard fixes Venus and Serena's matches. But the truth is that was only a tabloid and they was treated with no human respect when there was absolutely no proof that is true. The thing that really got to them is that the crowd considered them guilty of something based upon a bitter opponent and a tabloid. Apparently it's ok to do that only to black people, you know, just make up a story about them and believe it.

other facts:
Venus H2H vs Serena was
from 1998-before Indian Wells 2001

4-1 In Venus' favor, Serena last won in 1999 Grand Slam Cup
Venus was a dominant figure..
Serena was kinda chokarena back then..

looking at the draw..
the Quarters were like this:
1-Hingis def 31- Farina Elia 6-0 6-1
14-Clijsters def WC-Bovina 6-2 6-2
3-Venus def 8-Dementieva 6-0 6-3
7-Serena def 2-Davenport 6-1 6-2

wow.. total domination of the 4 semifinalist!!

Crowd wanted a good match,
they didnt get it, things got out of hand
Venus withdrew, words were said
and Venus won Miami 2 weeks later saving 8match points
against Jen who beat Serena in the quarters 6-1 7-6(5)
Serena who beat Clijsters 6-0 6-2 in her previous match...

well.. all i can say is that..
Venus could have done the double..

Usually we don't do this (closing threads only because the original question has been answered, but this time I agree.

This topic has been discussed numerous times before, and each time the discussion ended up as a fight between posters. We don't want this to happen again, so I am closing the thread before it does.
