Mel and I were discussing it would be a good idea to have a thread to discuss music and to post stuff we like,it can be our favourite songs, what we listen to at the moment, concerts we have been to...since music is always a popular topic and sveta herself loves it (we can also discuss sveta's taste in music :p ).

So feel free to make any music suggestions ;)

Zemfira "Beskonechnost" (Infinity)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUEFPP0IOtA&feature=related
and the lyrics (translation I found on youtube)
I want to keep an honest taste of the cigarettes
In my mouth
Your gaze is very dear to me
Your colour is very important to me
I just die when I see...
See precisely, and there is nobody there to sing
I am so afraid to be late, to do even something in time.
With frozen fingers in the
Absence of hot water
With frozen thoughts in the
Absence of, of course, you

And I will freeze
I will shoot in the back
I will pick an expression
And have a good evening
I'm not doing this on purpose,
It's just so happened
I have just solved
The sign of infinity
Eyes, disappointed with a film,
Enchanted with the sky
I can't explain it,
but I return back
Accompany me out -- there will remain not more
But not less than the sound
And the sound is the same as the thread,
But I am still a friend

With frozen fingers in the
Absence of hot water
With frozen thoughts in the
Absence of, of course, you

And I will freeze
I will shoot in the back
I will pick an expression
And have a good evening
I'm not doing this on purpose,
It's just so happened
I have just solved
The sign of infinity

And I will freeze
Will pull down my baseball cap
Will move something
And have a good evening...

Mel,here's the translation of that russian song I posted the other day (from internet)

No way Out

Translation by katya (http://russmus.net/staff.jsp?profile=katya)
How many years passed by, still the wires buzz the same
Still for the same the planes await
Girl with ice-blue eyes
Melts under the gunfire
Well someone has to melt

Soon comes the dawn, there's no way out
Turn the key and we'll fly away
We have to write, in someone's notebook
All in blood, as in the metro (*)
No way out, there's no way out

Somewhere we left eachother, can't remeber
In what cities
As if it was on a hang-over
Trains keep on crossing my songs
Disapearing in the dark tunnel
I just want us to wake up in the same bed

Soon comes the dawn, there's no way out
Turn the key and we'll fly away
We have to write, in someone's notebook
All in blood, as in the metro (*)
No way out, there's no way out

How many years will pass by, still the wires will buzz the same
Still for the same the planes will await
Girl with ice-blue eyes
Melts under the gunfire
I just want us to wake up in the same bed

(*) Reference to the Russian metros (subways) where it's always written on the doors "exit" and "no exit" which can also be translated as "way out" and "no way out". "All in blood" meaning in red letters, as the words are written in the metro.

Butusov "Devushka po gorodu" (Girl in the city)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBJ1AmalyVY
the girl in the city walks barefoot,
The trafic light cede the road to the girl,
The air policeman smiles from above -
The girl nods head in return.
And somewhere out of city there is a spring ice,
People part toward to the girl.
The girl on Pushkin on Lenin Street around,
At the tail the streamship in the channel floats.

And behind a window days flash,
They as take-off lights:
One cognized from height,
Others are not so visible.
And the spring blossoms on a court yard,
She is in love with someone,
And this someone sits behind a window
And sees day after day as

The girl on city walks barefoot,
On squares and on streets flits like a moth.
The girl dives through an arch,
The sun warms, heart of the girl sings.

Zemfira"Hochesh" (do u want?)

Please do not die
Or I will have to too
You certainly at once in paradise
And I do not think that will too

Do you want sweet oranges
Do you want stories long aloud
Do you want I shall blow up all stars
That detain you to sleep

Please only live
You see I live with you
My huge love
Will be enough for both of us

Do you want to go in the sea with sails
Do you want the music, the most new ones
If you want I shall kill the neighbours
That detain you to sleep
Do you want the sun instead of a lamp
Do you want the Alpes in a window
If you want I shall give away all songs
About you I shall give away all songs …

lyrics for "iskala"

searched for you years long,
Searched for you in dark court yards,
In magazines, at cinema,
Among friends,
In day when has found,
I gone mad.
You just like in my dream,
Just as in albums,
I drew you with gouache

Further were calls,
More at nights,
Tears, nerves, love
And arrows in Poland, where
At cinema not my old dull beggars,
You smoke every five, we tired both.
You just like in my dream,
Just as in albums,
Where I drew you with gouache
Years long
At the nights dark
Years long

I searched for you years long,
Searched for you
By dark court yards,
In magazines, at cinema,
Years long,
Searched for you
At the nights...

Bi-2 and Brainstorm "Slippery streets"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NivkkTXd4fM&feature=related

Translation by katya

Air sparkles, wish to simply believe
That the most terrifying nightmare
As a soap bubble, will burst

Blaze up in your chest, but won’t warm you up
Your heart will leave the amber fire
Empty

Chorus:
Slippery streets, foreign cars kissing
A miserable love’s crumpled wings
With random encounters, minutes pass by
And no one can answer, what awaits us ahead

On a velvet body, ice is melting
As a thin smoke, such a short night
Time will pass, and eventually it’ll chase
This bright ribbon of roads of doubt, away

Chorus

Cross-roads on arrows
Until the horizon they lay flat
City’s like an island
On the edge of the world

Chorus

This is such a neat thread-like Sveta, I enjoy R&B and some hip-hop, but love the classic artists from which today's music came-Staple Singers, Isley Brothers, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder. I guess that dates me, hehe. I've always loved world music and especially pop music from different countries, especially Russia. Now I have a new collection-keep it coming!

I'll listen to anything except music that promotes violence or that objectifies women-otherwise, anything from classical to opera to Chris Brown. Like Sveta, it's one of my favorite topics :).

I found translation:

What is Autumn

Translation by ana (http://russmus.net/staff.jsp?profile=ana)
What is Autumn? It's the heavens
Crying heavens under my feet
Birds and clouds fly apart in the puddles
Autumn, it's been long since I were with you!
Birds and clouds fly apart in the puddles
Autumn, it's been long since I were with you!

Autumn, ships burn in the sky
Autumn, I would from here fly
Out there sadness drowns in the gray -
Autumn. Dark, distant way

What is Autumn? It's the marbles,
Darkening faith on the Neva River
Autumn, you reminded my soul of the most important
Autumn, without peace again you left me
Autumn you reminded my soul of the most important
Autumn, without peace again you left me

Autumn, ships burn in the sky
Autumn, I would from here fly
Out there sadness drowns in the gray -
Autumn. Dark, distant way

What is Autumn? It's the wind,
Playing again in the torn chains
Autumn, can we crawl, do you think, live until the sunrise?
Motherland and me, what shall befall us?
Autumn, can we crawl, do you think, live until the answer?
Tomorrow, you think, what shall befall us?

Autumn, ships burn in the sky
Autumn, I would from here fly
Out there sadness drowns in the gray -
Autumn. Dark, distant way

(again)

Swarmed city melts in the fog
Autumn, what did I know of you?
As long as the leaves will fall torn
Autumn is always right...

I'll look for the other one ;)

This will show my age :p.

The last "concert" I went to was last Christmas, the Trans Siberian Orchestra (which has nothing to do with Siberia or Russia). It was part light show, part rock concert. Very good, if they come to your countries :).

Before that, I hadn't been to a concert in years, as I dislike crowds. I saw Chicago and the Little River Band years ago, and Linda Ronstadt. I guess when I was a teenager, I was always going to musicals or the symphony instead .

I'd love to see the Rolling Stones just once before they call it quits (if they ever tour again), just to say I saw them. I really enjoy small venues with folk singers, but that's hard to do when you have small children who need a sitter :p.

Others concerts I've been to...not many,I also don't like large crowds as Anne said.I saw some years ago Garbage and Pet Shop Boys, and then some spanish singing groups and artists you probably have not heard of (Amaral,Andrés Calamaro,Coti,Luz Casal...).

Looks like Zemfira has been singing some concerts in USA.I found a review of the one in San Francisco and as we have talked about her here before,I thought some of you might be interested in reading it.It's good to know her music is also heard in the states and that people who attented the show enjoyed it and liked her music :D

Zemfira in San Francisco

After her grand tour across the Russia Zemfira took a deep breath and even didn’t make a pause being going on to the USA. Four cities were visited by Zemfira: New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco and gathered together over 6,000 viewers from both Western and Eastern Hemispheres.

Among performed songs were her songs from the last album “Spasibo” (“Thank you”): “Voskresenye” (Sunday), “Gospoda” (The Gentlemen), “Mi razbivaemsya” (We’re crushing), “Ya polyubila vas” (I was fallen in love with you), “Vo mne” (Inside of me) etc., and also included both released hits from early works: “Rakety” (the Rockets), “PMML” (My love. I’m so sorry), “LKSS” (Love as an accidental death), and some unreleased singles.

Singing an old song about San Francisco at the last concert was among the highlights and it was great, pleasant and really unbelievable. As she said herself: ‘Mortality trick! But we’ll try. Especially for you’, - and done it - beautiful, romantic, effectible, added: ‘it’s a song about people loving San Francisco’.

All the concerts well fully hit-filled performances, very long awaited for both sides and the last one which held in Fox Theater of San Francisco was awesome! It was really great! Pure sound, quality light, responsive audience (course it is better to ask Zemfira about this for sure) and lot of magic music. How she does it? I’m extremely inspired of the richest combinations she finds: rock-n-roll, rock, jazz, blues, disco, and even Russian folk with songs “Temnaya noch’”, “Rasskazhi snegurochka”. She uses great variety of instruments in her band, playing keyboard, guitar, electro guitar herself.

I can not help admiring of this! How she controls everything!? She tries and keeps all the things in control! Perfectly! Musically and lyrically it was fantastic! Despite of the all difficulties: administration and organization, flights and customs problem solving, long way flights and car driving and even having under cured throat, Zemfira and her heroic band have overcome all of this successfully.

And one more thing I found that day – she was so natural, harmonious and very glad of being there in San Francisco. She looks being very luck out, and was smiling a lot. Lacks of words for me demonstrated a result of professional work and fully involving in the performance she was doing. Both fans and viewers were very excited and inspired of the show. Even the last sector which is being always reserved was extremely disturbed that day! Seemed the balcony and the floor what’re of woody made could be destroyed.

Discussing the concert with the Americans heard her songs first time I’ve got the confirmation with their words: “Talented!, - they were praising.

Zemfira seems to be a sort of person who is always fishing for something new and the results are in her music and herself. It has become more mature, melodic, varied and harmonious in comparison with music she started with. And this brought her up from the teenager’s audience to varied one, earning attention of people different kinds of tastes. Suppose that she is the only person she trusted with the music. Last events support she is on the right way.

To be frank, San Francisco show has become the highest point of the tour indeed. And the highlight came near the end: “Everything you need is love” with a defending long-minute rock-n-roll!! Still it was magnificent!

No plans are announced by Zemfira nevertheless the US tour surely will continue the trend of her growing up.

I never knew who Pink was, until you two :). Darn generational difference. I liked both songs, and she'll grow on me.

As long as we're talking breakup songs, here's one of my favorites, that I just found (again) last night:

I found out last night that if you follow this: http://www.muzcentrum.ru/eng/collectives/, it's the home page for that page I sent yesterday. It's a huge collection of groups and selections, from pop to Tchaikovsky to old spirituals to Big Band and Swing. It's great :D, and certainly a must-see if I get to Moscow.

Never thought I'd hear a Russian a capella group do "Go Down Moses", but I have now.

It's not on the topic of Sveta's music, I know, but it's funny what you can find on accident.

Bероника, this film was adapted from Pushkin a short novel, you can look here about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blizzard
In fact, music and decorations are wonderful, actors are gorgeous, but something is wrong - may be the work of a director or a soundman - I don't found so much in cinema. I think if I would be ten years younger, I couldn't stand it, cause it would be boring for me.

Well, the USA's pretty large to have a national favorite ;). Speaking for myself, my dad was 100% Scottish, and his favorite song was "Auld Lang Syne" (something like "old times passed"):

Should old acquaintence be forgot
And never brought to mind,
We'll raise a cup to kindness yet
And to days of auld lang syne

There are other verses, but that's the most familiar to me.

Nooo, that dutch music is not at all what gogol bordello is about! It's all about gyspy punk and folk!

I was not saying it was the same kind of music but that you just on both kinds of music can be as crazy as you want to be

When I click on Cosmica, it says "Not available in your country" :fiery:, but I love love love the other one :worship:. I assume the outdoor scenes are in Barcelona.

Oh, and congratulations to Penelope Cruz for her Oscar last night :). I didn't see the movie because of my boycott of Woody Allen anything, but she is a good actress (and very guapa ).

you boycott woody allen? why? I love his movies but I don't think this last one is one of his best ones.Imo Penelope's character is a bit extreme and exagerated, but of course I'm very happy for her. She's a very nice and sweet girl,a good actress and a beautiful woman.I like her a lot ;)

I think it's just me and personal squickiness issues. I could never understand or get into his movies, though I'll admit he is a very good director. Then he married Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, which was a little too oogly for me. I'll also admit that if I were to boycott every author/director/singer for anything I might object to, I'd never read a book or see a movie again in my life :tape:. So I know it isn't logical, but I can't get myself around that.

I don't get why he was in so many relationships with beautiful women when he's uh...woody allen :p
Yeah, when you take naked pictures of your adopted daughter that's just wrong, regardless if you end up marrying her and she's not your daughter anymore ...:tape:
And am I the only person who thinks Scarlett, his muse is soo overrated in terms of acting ability?
I personally think Penelope is better in Pedro's films ;)

Basta "Mama"
Forgive me mama for growing up so early,
for me hurting you, again and again,
Forgive me mama, I’m guilty
I’m sorry I didn’t become like elder brother
My life, mama, is like black-white cinema,
Everything is like good, but always there is one “BUT”
Why everything is this way is not easy to understand,
What does this mean? Wish me success, mom!
Road calls me, you hide tears .
Mom, I won’t be here for long time I know,
you know, mom, I know you believe, mom, you believed and you believe in me still
and it’s enough and when fate brought me down from the feet,
through the pain and desperation I heard the voice: “Arise, my son!”
This ballad I devote to all mothers, that their love give to us

Chorus
Tell me mom, how much costs my life?
my life is drama, my soul rushes high into the air
tell me, mom, how much costs my life ?
my life is drama, my soul rushes high into the air

In the most difficult minutes of my life,
when death was very closely,
Stars by sparks fell from the sky
and thoughts about you, mom,
were as the small beam of light.
in search of the answer, in search of the way
I gather all forces and continue to follow
forgive me for everything, mom,
I was guilty but all it remained in the past –
time not to return back
I attempt to arise from the elbows,
a little to be raised
but something prevents me from the earth
from being detached I pray.
Give me the forces , God , to understand
that it disturbs me,
who will help me?
perhaps, God, my faith is weak,
but wherever I was I remember these words
forgive for the fact that I tell u these words rare: MOM I LOVE YOU!

I love bon jovi to very much. first comes pink then anouk and then bon jovi I named my guinea pigs after them first I had bought one for my older guinea pig. and I named the new one Jon after the lead singer then the older one died and I had to buy 3 new ones to replace the old one and I named them after the members of the band

talking about pink I went to her concert yesterdat and she was great again. he voice was good and the show was big again. what that woman can do is amazing. she does acrobatics and just keeps on singing.(I will try later to post my videos I made the quality is not great but then you know what I mean) she made my whole day or maybe week good. its a crazy feeling that you can feel so good while the person doing it is not even realising it. I mean sveta makes me feel good with her tennis but she doesnt know me or the other way around I have the same thing with pink.

This is way OT, but I was reading a book today and had an epiphany about that feeling, as I've had it also.

According to the book, we don't fall in love because of what someone does for us, or out of romance or all that stuff. We "fall in love" when we are carrying around a lot of love inside ourselves and something-our soul?-recognizes another person's love and bubbles up in response. You don't even have to know the other person, but just something about them makes you feel great. I think that's why we joke about being addicted, almost, to Sveta; we think it's funny but it might just be our responding to her love for herself and life. The book went on to say that we can be in touch with our love, even when we're single, and we become very magnetic to others. It's not something that you have to wait to feel until you find a partner.

So maybe that's one reason Mel loved the concert last night, and why we're all here ;). We recognize something from a stranger.

I don't know; maybe there's some truth to that. I know there are people I love to be around, even if it isn't romantic.

Never mind me, carry on :tape:

what is this song about cuz it sounds sad but olympic games arent that said to me or did I miss something??

the lyrics r short.
surely we will meet, do u hear me?
forgive me...
it's spring in the place where I go
I know u will be able to find me
don't be alone

it sounds like he sings about love and of course he does but it's very special angle of love esp combined with that video, our ppl (and I mean not only russian but most of ex-ussr ppl) feel sad about those times when our country was great, when ppl were more friendly to each other and so on. Olympics in Moscow for us is not only just sport event it is symbol of the great power which we were some time ago, but then we separated to live in "spring". It's ahow I see this song. maybe I'm wrong, but I know many ppl here feel the same.
It's hard to explain. this song is a one big emotion.

Some quality music here already, currently my fav band is Tegan and Sara (Canadian twin sisters), but their music isn't for everyone, it's an acquired taste I think?

Concerts - I went and watched Coldplay at Rod Laver Arena a few weeks ago and have tickets to see Pink in May.

Definitely twins, tegan has a piercing just below her lower lip and they both have different tattoos, first saw them on 'The L Word' and have now downloaded about 70 songs, they rock my world. I went and saw Pink in 2007, rate it as probably best concert I've been to, hope she's just as good this time around :)

I went to that concert also this concert is even better for sure. there is even more show and acrobatics and her voice is still as great.

That was very funny...I like Cher but she owes me about 2 weeks of sleep after she filmed 'turn back time' aboard the USS Missouri, sheeesshhh if that is artistic then I'll grow my eyebrows together, pick up a paintbrush and call myself Frida Kahlo:lol:

I think it depends on your radio. I listen to bbc radio 1 A LOT and they always actively seek out new music. I watch EV cos it's so camp and I love abba! I find EV not a great indication of music cos if it did then we'd have hired Leona Lewis to sing her heart out :p
 I watch foreign films mainly. I am addicted to subtitles, can't watch anything without it :p
