I think we can say that may be one of the most stunning matches of the year. Petrova is not someone without weapons and not someone who exactly just gives you a steady diet of short balls or tons and tons of errors. Safina was just scary good today!!!

The match lasted only 52 minutes 13 seconds long.

Petrova held only 1 out of 6 service games. And she faced a bp in the 1 service game she wasn't broken.

And to think I thought Nadia was going to win this one.

First result of Dinara I have been happy about since Montreal, she finally seems to have played a good match. Hopefully she keeps her confidence on her serve from this match and runs with it. I can't take anymore flinching everytime she hits that second serve. :o

A new #3 in the world, 3rd TI final this year, going for her 3rd win over Sveta this year...it all makes sense. ;)

Way to go Dina, I think that she was disappointed in her semi final against serena cuz she could have played better. The mere exhaustion of having played so much and the sublime form of serena got the better of her. But Dina is now the russian number 1 and number 3 player of the world. I think she will win against sveta and a very top contender for all the tournaments that she plays for the rest of the year!! Let's hope she wins AU or RG!

Go Dina! Now just keep on top of that serve and no more df!!

Nadia just beat Aga 63 60, something must have happened to lose 16 06

It looks as if I may be the only one who is not shocked by the result, not even by the score. For me, there is a plausible explanation.

Nadia is indeed in a good form, as well as Dinara. Nadia had very difficult early rounds opponents, unlike Dinara. Nadia had to be mobilized against Ana, even though Ana is in a slump. Her next opponent, Agnieszka, was not in a slump, actually she played just great against Bartoli, with very high percentage on the first serve.

Nadia, of course was fully aware of that. She carefully prepared her tactic and came fantastically mobilized to face Agnieszka, while the latter was visibly lacking necessary mobilization, I would even risk saying: Agnieszka was lulled by her great performance a day earlier. This has to be recognized now as a regular pattern for Agnieszka: playing fully mobilized to take a difficult hurdle, and then, out of elation and emotional relief, not coming with the same level of mental preparation for her next match. The results we know. Her beating by Petrova follows this pattern exceedingly well, and it has little, in my opinion, to do with the relative balance of skills between the two players.

But then Nadia, after her fantastic performance against Isia, couldn't help but feel a tremendous level of elation and emotional relief herself. This happens purely on subconscious level, and is very hard to control, whereas Dinara was fully aware how difficult task was lying ahead of her, in facing Nadia. Thus, it was Dinara this time, who came fully focused and mentally prepared, Nadia -- just the opposite, I am afraid. And it is hard to blame her.

By the way, something similar happened also to Dinara, at Roland Garros. Dinara faced a string of very difficult, almost impossible, tasks in earlier rounds. She was fully mobilized against Maria, she kept her mobilization against Elena, and even Sveta. She was not considerd a favorite, many thought of her as a one-time, two-times, fluke. By the time she reached the Final she was declared to be a mega-sensation, somebody who was seen by many as a favorite for the crown. In such circumstances, it was just psychologically unsustainable for her to come with the same level of total concentration for the fourth time in a row, for her last match in Paris. The result: a meek defeat at the hands of her opponent, for whom by the way the Final was only her second serious trial of the tournament.

Such matches and scores thus do not necessarily reflect the actual balance of tennis skills and capabilities between the players.

This analysis, of course, applies only to players who can demonstrate two things: a high level of skill on a consistent basis, and a mental ability to mobilize for big matches. Dinara, Nadia, Agnieszka certainly can.

Serena and Maria are similar in this respect. This may better explain some of their inexplicable losses than the usual 'an off-day' excuse. An off-day is a random thing, and there is nothing random in the patterns I described.

No she didn't Serena will not let her play her game. What I have notice about these players who play against the sisters is that the sisters make them raise their games that is why TD always want them in their tournaments. They also make finals very interesting. If JJ had played anyone else in the US Open final she probably would have won it 1-2 but with Serena or Vee you know you will get an exciting match.
