Serena and boyfriend have something in Common: Vancouver
Serena Williams practices at Vancouver Lawn and Tennis Club while boyfriend Common plays Malkin Bowl

Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club members got a Grand Slam-sized surprise Wednesday.

World No. 1 women's tennis player Serena Williams - whose rumoured boyfriend, hip-hop artist Common, performed at Malkin Bowl last night - showed up at the club for a two-hour practice.

Word spread Tuesday night, and by 9 a.m. Wednesday members began to gather for an up-close look at the U.S. Open champion.

Williams eventually arrived at 12:45 p.m. and about 75 people watched indoors as the nine-time Grand Slam winner went through hitting and agility drills, interspersed with text-message sessions.

Afterwards, Williams - who proved that if you're good enough, you can violate a club's dress code - said she was enjoying her first trip to Vancouver.

"I like it, it's such a beautiful day today," said Williams, who pulled out of this week's Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo with an ankle injury.

"Venus [her sister] told me that Vancouver was a really pretty city. I got to see the water and everyone was great at the [club]."

She played coy when asked if she was in town to see Common - "maybe, maybe not," she said, laughing.

For club member Pamela Steen, soaking up some Serena was a dream come true.

"The funny thing is that I often dream about tennis when I've had a lesson, and I had a lesson Tuesday and I had her in my dream that night," said Steen.

"Then I showed up and there she was. I didn't believe it.

"It was amazing. She hits hard balls and her movement - she's just really beautiful out there."

Williams signed Steen's tennis bag and spent a few gracious minutes with members.

One girl who snuck in a few words was Jenny Gjine of Sentinel Secondary.

The 14-year-old, up-and-coming player skipped a class for the rare chance to see the world's best player in person.

"What an amazing chance," Gjine said.

"On TV, it seems not real. When you get to see someone in real life like that, it just inspires you to play. It makes me want to get out there and hit and get as good as her.

"I said, 'Congratulations for winning the U.S. Open,' and she said, 'I hope you do well in your tennis.' "

I've met her and the rest of the williams clan. Serena is very down to earth and "normal". But Venus just exudes something unworldly and diva-ish. Yet I love her.

Ya know,

I don't like this whole Common thing.

I'm sorry, but I think Serena's the type that lets her love life dictate her attitude toward EVERYTHING else- includes tennis.

If this relationship goes bad (which it very well could), I think Serena's game will suffer GREATLY! Yeah, yeah, I know. Everyone says that Common is really good for Serena and her game and is very encouraging, blah, blah, blah..., BUT..., "show business is show business," and Common meets A LOT of women. A LOT.

I totally agree.I'm so unsure about Common...it's so strange, but I think this relationship with him is a big error for Serena

its not like you have to marry every person you go out with,I dont think Serena is serious about this relationship she said she is focused on her career...and she needs some lovimg here and there if she can get it from Common so be it.She doesnt appear to be a needy person because she has her own career and interests,I think Common is a mature person we never hear anything bad about him.I think he is better pick than that Jackie who was probably after her money.Common has a career and earns a living...thank God he is not mooching:)

It's true that Common meets lots of women, but he has a proven track record of being in long term relationships. Common has always been mature and now that he is older, I'm sure he's looking to settle down, whether it's with Serena or someone else. Common is no John Mayer. If Serena was with John than I would be worried.

Serena has been with Common for nearly a year and it's done wonders for her tennis this year. Common is fit and healthy so he can understand Serena's lifestyle.

I don't really have a problem with Common,I like him as a person,he does look like a decent guy.If Serena is happy ,I am more than happy.Serena has heard it all being said to her,saw it all happening in her life.Like everywoman, she's been trapped in this fairy tale "find a frog ,kiss it,and hope it would turn into a handsome prince".

The girl is entitle to have someone in her life and to spend time with that special person. What the hell you don't want the girl to have a man she must think, eat, and sleep tennis 24/7. And please who is the everyone that said common is really good for Serena. Mary made that statement and Serena put her in her place.

I think it's awesome that Serena goes to random tennis clubs in different cities. It lets fans get a chance to see her up close and (hopefully) personally!

Now if only she would visit a lower budget tennis club like mine....

READING is fundamental :help:

Relax. No one said she isn't ENTITLED. I just said I not crazy about her and COMMON, but who knows. Maybe it's a "happily ever after" thing...,

but I just have a feeling...
