ST. PETERSBURG, FL, USA - Elena Dementieva has joined Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic in qualifying for the Sony Ericsson Championships - Doha 2008, where the world's Top 8 singles players and Top 4 doubles teams from the 2008 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season will compete for the season-ending title at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha, Qatar, from November 4-9, 2008.

Dementieva, a champion at Dubai and the Olympics this year and most recently a semifinalist at the US Open, is currently ranked No.5 in the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships with 2,855 points. With five players having secured their ticket to Doha, only three more spots remain in the singles draw of the prestigious year-end event. Maria Sharapova currently sits at No.6 with 2,515 points, followed by Venus Williams with 2,106 points and Svetlana Kuznetsova with 2,022 points.

"One of my goals has always been to get as close as possible to the top and to make it to the Sony Ericsson Championships," Dementieva said. "Making it to Doha just shows me that I've been doing a few things right this season, so I am just very happy about my qualification. I have played very well all year and I will certainly try my best to finish the season on a high note."

"Elena has had a fantastic 2008 campaign, and she has certainly earned her place at the year-end Sony Ericsson Championships," said Larry Scott, CEO of the Tour. "Elena has had an amazingly consistent presence at the year-end finale, a testament to the strength of her game and her amazing competitiveness."

"Elena's game has gone from strength to strength this year and she is sure to be a strong contender in the 2008 Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha," said Aldo Liguori, Corporate Vice President and Head of Global Communications & PR at Sony Ericsson. "The calibre of talent like Elena's throughout the Tour this year has been phenomenal and has placed women's tennis firmly on the map."

Elena won the Gold medal at the Olympics, and now she got some rest, it's very possible she's the best player in the world and the YEC favorite.

i'm convinced that she will have her best performance at the YEC this year, (how difficult :o), but i'm not sure that she can be THE favorite there.

let's win a match first.

One can say there are never too many occasions for celebration for Dementieva's fans, of course, but her qualifying for YEC was never in doubt since she reached Top 6 earlier this year.

Except one semi appearance in 2000, Elena has always been miserable at the YEC.
She always looked dead tired:confused:

I think it will be the same this year if you look at her schedule:
she's playing :
Luxembourg
Québec
YEC in Doha
all this in 3 weeks on 3 different continents!!!!

Smart schedule Elena:worship:

And before that she's supposed to play Stuttgart and Moscow :help:
But she probably will withdraw from Quebec's event.

Not too many, but there are enough, IMO, to keep most of us sane.

Ooooo I wanna be such a bitch right now. Could be wrong, but she's not signed up for Quebec.

Tokyo-week off-Stuttgart-Moscow-week off-Luxembourg-two weeks off-Doha

is her schedule, and that looks fair enough to me.

If Elena wins this title, she better not lose a match. :o If she loses a match, I don't want her to pretend her way to the title if she can. I hate RR...

There is no way in hell she's playing in Canada. That's just ridiculous.

What a retard if she does go with that schedule. Tier IIIs aren't worth it, idiot :smash:

luxembourg and quebec are both tier 3s so playing both would be unwise. i think luxembourg would be a good bet to some matches before YEC, but she will (i hope) skip quebec

Is Quebec near Buffalo? Maybe Lena is going there for something besides tennis.

Elena has rebounded nicely this year after having a tough year in 2007. Some experts thought that she could not raise her level but when Elena won Dubai (Tier II tourney with Tier I field), I felt like she was in for a good year and achieved her goal in winning the Gold Medal in Beijing.
