Željko Krajan, coach of Dinara Safina
Interview, July 18th, 2009

"The other is a simple girl"

20th April this year, Dinara Safina became the number one tennis player in the world. She has taken first place in the rank scale women WTA professional tennis associations. Only a year before that she was completely desperate, even thought that she would put away tennis racket in corner for some time. She was the 17th player in the world, all her peers passed her, and it was threatening her that because of bad results she will slip down the rankings. Then she started practicing with the Croatian coach Željko Krajan, sometimes excellent tennis players who are on the way to the top stop the damage. And things quickly turned for the better.

How did you begin collaborating with Dinara Safina?

"At the end of 2007 I became her sparring partner. Her coach at that time was Heinz Guenthardt, a Swiss, who for several years has also worked with Steffi Graf. With his work, I did not agree, everything was not working. When Dinara lost in the first round last year in Australia after truly bad game, I decided that as there is no more. Choose whether you work with him or with me, two coaches you can not have, I said to her. She simply made no progress."

Did she decide for you?

"Yes. When I took over, her confidence was in the dog, she felt bad, she was tired of it all. She tried with great coaches, it didn't work. She lost her faith in herself."

How did you turn the cart around?

"It's difficult to say exactly. When I was her second coach, I knew her well, we talked a lot. Problems had to be resolved through talks first, then on the tennis court. In all this, there was little philosophy. She wanted just that I help her. This I succeeded because of our own experience. When I played tennis, I had similar problems like her. I did not meet all expectations, some of them due to few injuries, some of them due to other causes. Dinara and I noticed the same problems."

So it was a psychological cause?

"That's right. Tennis, of course, she knew how to play. It was necessary to find out why she lost confidence. We practiced the things that have not previously worked, and when she transferred all the training to the tournaments, which last May won Berlin, it was opened for her. She started to believe in me and herself and change was swift."

What works differently today than a year and a half ago?

"A lot of things. Attitude towards tennis is completely different, she thinks differently. She is still not the strongest mentally, she can't be corrected all within one year. Negative thinking, a certain tennis depression, it dragged on for long. Her fear before training is much lesser now, she doesn't think any more that every practice session must be perfect. Much has changed in her head. "

In practice operates relaxed.

"Dinara has remained simple girl. She has no major demands, she doesn't imagine she is a big star. That is why it is nice to work with her. For the coach it is ideal that she is not conceited. She never will be completely relaxed, as is her brother or other male tennis players. Still be demonstrated at every practice session, always wants to be a hundred percent, although this is dangerous because it can burn out quickly, more so mentally than physically. We work on this still, there is only tennis for her, tennis and once again tennis. And if she plays badly, she is dissatisfied also in private life."

You say that women differ from men in tennis. How?

"Women hate the weight pressure and stress associated with top tennis. Men are different. When not on the court, they can be more relaxed. If you are thinking about tennis 24 hours a day, you hold on heavily. Especially if you happen to fall lower in the rankings. This is the reason that some players so quickly end a career, for example Justine Henin or Kim Clijsters. "

Therefore, you understand women?

"All such shows. (laughs) Do I understand Dinara only, I do not know. Analysis, discussion of tennis, they go on continuously. Even in training she requires a lot from me. At the beginning it bothered me, I thought that she was the only one who wants to talk only about tennis. Now I see that girls function like this so that they literally need every day to explain all over again. This is from me requires a lot of energy and nerves. "

They have these girls anything out of life? They know how to enjoy the money they earn?

"It depends. Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters a little more time spent outside the courts. Tennis is not everything to them. For most Russians, such as Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva, there is only tennis. This is the reason that it is all in the top. All the top tennis players are trying, but they are trying still ten times more. You can work with them 24 hours a day, will do whatever is necessary. "

And Dinara belongs among them?

"You could say that, even in this vision."

Why Russians?

"I guess the mentality, the status enjoyed by women in this country. From small they learn that they have to work and be obedient, be it at home or on the tennis court. Therefore, often completely dependent on their coaches. This is not good, but the way it is."

What is the relationship you have with the Safin family?

"Dinara's first tennis steps were made under her mother's supervision. However, her mother has never been her coach. I also initially thought that parents will want to decide on a number of ways, but it is not. Not even Dinara's brother Marat, who has broad experience, he doesn't want to take over responsibility, that his sister could ever reproach him that her gave the wrong advice. "

What Dinara doing when you are not thinking about tennis?

"Shopping. Or she goes to dinner at a good restaurant. No way will not go out and have fun all night. A lot of time is spent alone in hotel rooms, the Internet and on TV. On the level at which she is now, the pressure from all sides is such that she simply must be alone, especially at major tournaments. "

John McEnroe in his autobiography wrote that to be the third or first in the world a huge difference.

"This is true. Until I saw it myself, I didn't believe. Being the first is quite another. The pressure of the media is horrible, expectations are enormous. In each tournament you are the favorite. "

What is the stress of such life coach? Do you have a family, you're constantly on the move.

"I have two years and four months old daughter, but this year I was at home in Varazdin all of two weeks. It is not easy. If there were no results, would not hang on. Sometimes the family travels with me, so it is also here now, in Portoroz. "

Can the money be a motivation for such efforts?

"At the beginning it's more difficult. At this level, where I am now, he can earn well. "

When you began to coach Safina, they believe that they may be the first in the world?

"Certainly she believed in this, otherwise she would not have been so disappointed that she was in the 17th position. She believed, but she did not know what she doing wrong. Constancy drove her to the top. In the last year has by far the most stable results. At each tournament, she placed in the finals, semi finals, or she wins. This is the reason that she is number one today. "

At Wimbledon, the champion Serena Williams made fun of Safina, of the argument that the number one has not won a Grand Slam tournaments. It was rude.

"It makes no sense to discuss. Nobody prohibited Serena Williams from being the first in the world. All have this possibility. However, if she acts only in large tournaments, the others come to pick up the guarantee and then goes homes quickly after, that is her problem. On Safina exert pressure. It does very well, so they learn from a very early. Dinara, this is well tolerated. She believes that one day also win a grand slam. It was not random in the last five major tournaments three times in finals. Only a matter of time when it will be won."

In the finals of Paris, the camera showed you nearby. How did you experience that defeat?

"Maybe this defeat was really a great disappointment. Dinara has previously won the tournament on the clay, in Rome also defeated Kuznetsova, who then won Paris. This defeat was great school for Dinara. She simply needs time, that she matures."

What was the lesson in Paris?

"When she won the semi-finals, panic engulfed her. It wasn't possible to reasonably talk to her. She wasn't thinking about how to play, it just felt a great desire to win the tournament. It is never good to think too much about the result. We'll see next time if she learnt something from this."

Many have also criticized her semi-final defeat at Wimbledon against Venus Williams, saying that such a result isn't in honor of the first player of the world.

"Dinara on the grass has never played well, she had never won more than two rounds. A semi-final was a great success for her, it also brought a lot of points on the ranking scale, with which has further increased attack before the Williams sisters. If she played her best tennis, perhaps against Venus won a few points higher. The result might not have been 6-1, 6-0, but 6-3, 6-3. Venus played perfectly, I do not know how she could lose the final."

Dinara is the best player on the clay?

"I think the best in the concrete. She has many excellent results on the clay, because on this surface the other players find themselves worse. But she plays better on the concrete. "

In what form is the tournament in Portoroz?

"Coming back after a break. After Wimbledon she needed some time to relax. She is in good shape, all it is just right."

The majority also attaches to your credit that you have brought her to Portorož. Justified?

"Partly. There were a few other options, in the end we decided on Portorož. I feel at home here, I'm practically on vacation. Dinara has not previously heard of Portoroz, so that I really influenced this, that she came here. "

Are you happy with your decision?

"I am. Dinara is also grateful to me. She always wants to win, but she said to me in training today that she particularly wants to win this tournament to repay all who care, that to be in Portoroz feels so good. "

What is her greatest quality?

"The desire for tennis. All the players want to play tennis, but not so much as Dinara. This is something I've never seen. Her warrior spirit is difficult to describe. She demonstrates this every day, shows every ball hit in training their best. This is her big, huge competitive advantage. "

Tennis is a forbidden topic

Dinara Safina was born on 27th April 1986 in Moscow. Is 182 centimeters high and weighs 70 kilograms. Derived from a tennis family. Her father is director Mikhail tennis club in Moscow, her mother Rauza Islanova and tennis coach. Her older brother Marat Safin in 2000 was the first tennis player the world has now slipped to 58th place. "For me, Marat is the most beautiful and in addition to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal the best tennis player in the world, it is beyond doubt," Dinara cherishes her own brother. "However, at the moment, no one can help. Each year he says that this is his last season. He is tired, he lived to see all within tennis. He went from home at 14, in Spain he lived alone for 6 years. Burned out. "

Although the whole family lives for tennis, this is not the main topic of discussion amongst Safins. "With Marat we more or less immediately quarrel. We are not the most patient characters. I don't want to talk to my parents about tennis. I listen to only my coach. I respect him highly, he is my only boss. Anyone else not even allowed to start a conversation with me about tennis. I stop them at once. The parents I see very little. Portorož is the first tournament this year in which they came. I'd rather go with them to dinner, talking about everyday things completely."

Awesome. Whoever this reporter is should travel on tour full time.

Thanks for that, Sarah. :) There's never enough attention on how hard it is to be a coach at that level, and that was a pretty good look at it. I'm actually glad to hear the fam travels with him sometimes (although I'm sure that pretty much means Stuttgart and Portoroz), maybe Chiara will recognize him when she gets older. :p 50 weeks/year away from your family is pretty tough.

Dina needs someone to travel with her who is only there to hang out with her in her hotel room because there is only so much that you can watch on television/ do on the internet before being bored to tears and in need of a change of scenery.

"I believe fully Krajan"

The key to stay in Croatia, of course, Zeljko Krajan, with whom he came Safina and where there is - in the top of the world, and already was the first in the world: "We have a relationship of players and coaches. In this game you have no friends, only the coach need to know how you feel before a match, it does not believe that spread the news if something bad on the eve of the match. A couple of articles from September 2008. I don't recall either of them being posted before, but I could be wrong.

http://www.sportnet.hr/Vijest.aspx?ID=365912

"Krajan me completely changed"

Dinara Safina, from coaching this season guided the hand of the former Croatian Davis Cup national team Zeljko Krajana in Stuttgart, will seek her fifth WTA title in an excellent year so far, that is, except for titles, and marked the final at Roland Garros, silver at the Olympics in Beijing and the breakthrough to current third place in the world. Quite sufficient reason for optimism ahead of performances in Germany and a positive evaluation of the previous cooperation with the Croatian coach ...

"Explosion" Dinara Safina began in mid-May victory in the Tier I tournament on the red earth of Berlin, and continued with three titles in Los Angeles, Montreal and pretprošlog week at Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Beginning with the Berlin, almost 22-year-old Russian women is really phenomenal, with Career record 41-5, with the occasional exception, almost every tournament has come very far.

"Much has changed since the beginning of the year, much has affected my tennis life," said the younger sister of Marat Safin, who with his results this year to take care of Marat frequently as stories about her older brother: "My coach Zeljko Krajan I completely changed, I think it is only believed in me when I took over. "

In the first weeks of the season did not go so well, it took time to get everything turned in a better direction, "At the beginning of the year I played Dohu, I was mentally so 'down', I did not have the will for no reason. Neither training, nor for the game, went I bezvoljno on the ground, I asked what did I do in the tournament. Željko's probably 1000 times saying, 'Dinara, believe in yourself, believe in shock, all you have to be number one, the only thing you need to believe in ourselves ...' He somehow pulled me out of that hole, and there, from Berlin went and still going! "

In Berlin it was a special win in eights final against Justine Henin, the first time in the world, showed that it was the last match of his career high, Belgian tennis player ... "I was a little strange when he said that right away, but honestly, I think that will ever go away, I thought that it will take a little break."

Henin's departure affect on competition in the world's top moment is such that players can change the first position, there is no domination of one as in Belgijkino best time, "Well, the truth is, each of us has been able to be number one, and each can finish the year as number one. "

Krajan is convinced that Safina could one days on the top, by the way, but the third is not so far away. "Yes, the truth is told that they can be the first in Doha, we played a tournament, there was exposed to Mercedes, I think it was a SLR, then I promised that I would give him such a car if you win one Grand Slam tournament. When I one Saturday in Paris against Ivanovic played in the finals at Roland Garros, I remembered that. I was constantly in my head was to my promise, so I very much wanted to get in Paris, not so much for myself, but for him, because he only believed in me beginning . I am so grateful because he is probably 1000 times on the day said that they could be number one, that can win a Grand Slam tournament. Every day I say that I have strokes and footwork and service, and everything to be the best. "

Opportunity to repaying Krajan car could happen, but at the end of the week. If you take the tournament in Stuttgart, Safina will win a red Porsche, a car as a traditional gift of the main sponsors of the tournament, and announced that he would let his coach award: "I think he deserved that car more than I do."

"Dinara can do Grand Slam titles"

Toys career shortened after problems with injuries, Zeljko Krajan did not take long to break in another, coaching waters. The former Croatian Davis Cup team member is the current coach of third-world players Dinara Safina, a lot of work, but after training with 22-year-old Russia, he found time to talk to Sportnet.hr about the current role that he, to say the results, a great match ...

Each new job usually brings labor, it was also the co-operation Äeljko Krajan and Dinara Safina, but as soon as they took first success with the title of May in Berlin, followed up and many others. Epilogue - Safina is now third in the world, is a leading Russian showgirl, a shooting and more, the top of the WTA charts. Of course, the reasons for a lot of satisfaction.

How would you describe this season Dinara compared with, say, that last year? How you are influenced by their work on the psyche and play Safin this year - here, came to the third position in the WTA rankings and with four titles this year, played the finals at Roland Garros and the Olympics, U.S. Open semi-finals ...?

"Mostly I worked on her psyche because he did not believe in my game. When I took over at the end of last year was completely demotivated in Doha is a bit lacking to fully leave the tennis. It's been a long time and knew the fall and some harsh words while working with her because at the beginning did not believe that it can thrive on a scale. I am beginning to say that she has the game and force not only to get the Grand Slam tournament, but also to become number one in the WTA rankings. Her former coach after her lost matches criticized the game, criticized any bad points, but they did not say what was in that match well made. I even do the opposite, I say that in this match was good and the next time you have to do better to turn the match succeeds. "

Earlier in the matches such as those in Roland Garros against Dementieva and Sharapova lost, and this time saved match balls and reached the finals ...

"Yeah, it's really just the result of working with her because we spent a lot of times long conversations, she found herself motivated to turn tough matches regardless of the match-ball rivals, she found a way out of difficult situations. However, it still and that there is room for improvement because, for example, the finals at Roland Garros is not a game nor in 20% of its capability, scared the Parisian audience, began to argue with the judges, has lost its winning rhythm instead of playing their game. The reason for the defeat was not a good game rivals but unfortunate course of little things that contributed to errors and loss of the match. "

After Paris, followed by good results in two big tournaments, the finals of the Beijing Olympics and U.S. Open semifinal. Do you think that is a very short period of just a few days break between the two tournaments still to play Dinara influence in the semifinals in New York?

"Very much so! Dinara his matches (in Beijing, op.) Played quite late at night, sometimes they were ended and four in the morning, she knew because of the rain to wait up to seven hours in the locker room until he came out to the field. And then the other day but noon couples had to play for their country ... The second problem was the climate in Beijing, moist air is breathed heavily, the players and the players have sweated more than what is otherwise the case, all played by very difficult conditions, so that and silver dinars for it to be something big. short time between Olympics and U.S. Open but has left its toll on Dinarinoj freshness to the semi-finals had more power to oppose Serena Williams. Just her body was in the reserves, eagerly wanted that title not only for victory, but for number one. "

Are you in Beijing saw some of our athletes?

"Yes, I watched Cilic in the first round, but then the rain ruined the schedule, the organizers wanted to play all the fastest time so I had to worry that you have completed all the training that had matches, so I just watched the results via television. "

What is the plan after Stuttgart?

"First, of course, going to Moscow, and then we break to Doha, where the Masters tournament held for women. After a little break from maybe ten days before starting to train again for next season, followed by preparations for the Australian Open. "

Two weeks before the Paris Dinara was a major in Varazdin, Krajan's hometown ...

"We were, in fact, twice in Varazdin, the first time in Berlin before some couple of days because the weather conditions were better than in Munich, then we are again after Berlin decided to Varazdin, because we understand that time in Croatia, much better than in Germany, so we form tempirali the grounds of my club. "

And how Dinara "adopted" the town of Varazdin and Vara×din?

(Laughter) "You can imagine how "scared" of Varazdin, lives in the city (Moscow, op.) Of the 10 million people, and came to Vara×din, which has probably 50 thousand. At the beginning it was strange, but then accepted by all, she was beautiful, the town was very impressed. You may go there again next season in some preparations, we will see, the main not to be injuries. "

Could you describe how to run a little training, how it looks when you do not play tournaments?

"Many people think that life coaching is easy. But it is very difficult. Here, today, we got up at six in the morning, breakfast was at half past six, from seven to eight hours, we heated. From 8:00 to 8:45 because we had training another term we could get. Then we were in the gym, have lunch, and now re-training ... (it was 16 o'clock when he finished training) and when not in tournaments, all train together a four to five hours, of course, the warming that is required. "

How many balls you spend for such strong training?

"Well, one of 10-odd balls that we throw in a bucket. When the bin is full, then with a little 'očeÜanim' balls Dinara training services. Spano Racquets not every time, to work only in the tournament, but she does not have five racquets in practice, there are two wires if ruptures.

As with diet, beware anyone that eats and drinks?
"Of course, a healthy diet is one of the most important things in tennis, Dinara has even a person who controls what to eat. The body needs a lot of vitamins that can sustain such efforts in the matches."

Is it time to relax? On Tuesday, the Players Party, whether you go and Dinara?

"No, no chance for Dinara have a match on Wednesday. If you go to this party then it will lie before the 23 hours the other day and was immediately disrupted by the day, disturbed the normal course - training before the match, breakfast and lunch at the same time. Dinara lies before it can sleep and be rested for the match. Only with discipline can achieve the goals. "

Is your contract with Dinara was for one year or if you extend it?

"It was one year, but was extended after Dinara Berlin because she saw that her work fits with me, and there is no reason to stop it."

Zeljko, thanks a lot for separate good 40 minutes to Sportnet.hr, lots of greetings to Croatian dinars from the fans, hopefully a successful week in Stuttgart ... Dinara in the quarter would have gone to Venus Williams in the semifinals to Jelena Jankovic might, trying lots?

"The draw is such as it is, sometimes easily, sometimes difficult. However, the tournament is very strong so it is not horrible."

If Safina to play a major part of the season, it would be unrealistic to expect an appearance in the final stage of the tournament, regardless of draw weight ...

Krajan: S must be a tennis player and coach and psychologist

Zeljko Krajan was an excellent tennis player, 88th player of the world 2002nd year. He never hid that he was coaching the final goal to leave a trace in the men's tennis and was not seen as a coach on the WTA Tour. However, when it was already "zaglibio" the showgirl, he could hardly find a better worker than Safina.

- The hunger for success, it is absolutely the highest quality in it. All that will do it better and so I was especially pleased to work with her - said 30-year-old whose toy progress further injuries.

When asked about the coach, Safina rarely fails to point out that he is one of the few people that can be trusted. Krajan pointed out that the coaching job when it comes to women, but much more demanding when it comes to tennis.

- The men all boils down to tennis, you go to court, odradiš training and goodbye. With tennis players often have to be a psychologist, to talk with them and try to solve some of their mental block. Their mental consumption is enormous and the fluctuations in them more often than the players.

Offer him after the success of Dinara, not lacking.

- There were calls, most of the tennis player and some tennis federation. However, my plans are linked solely to Dinara - concluded Krajan.

From the article Sasha posted in the other thread:

However, when I was here the first time, several times a day I enjoyed a cappuccino on the terrace cafes Soho - say tennis player, who is well acquainted and Äeljkovu family: parents who have a transport company in Varazdin and Munich, and his wife Jelena, lawyers, that does not already take care of their kćerkici Chiara. three-year Chiara, whose name her father istetovirao on the left forearm, encased in the heart of the famous tennis player itself for ten years, seen as the mother.

In the history of tennis Dinara and Marat are the only brother and sister who were first on the ATP and WTA charts. It is interesting that Dinarina coach Zeljko Krajan, when he was 13, played his first and last match with Marat Safin. It was the junior tournament in Genoa, Italy. The winner is our tennis player - in three sets.

- Marat has - reminisced Zeljko Krajan - was 12 years old, he was quite young and could not lose. During the match he was able to run over five racquets. Dinara I used to be the such. Her brother was a role model and copy his behavior on the field: destroyed the rackets, svađala with judges, swore ... In the WTA, her organization has banned such behavior. When he played in a Grand Slam tournament, Dinara and Marat never came on the second one matches - both of them it was too stressful. Marat retired from tennis - the game only ekshibicijske senior matches and tournaments. When I was due to serious injuries had to stop tennis career, I never dreamed that I would come into the women's tennis. However, I am satisfied. Dinara and I works great, know how to relax, to motivate. She believes, and returned to her, and confidence. When we signed the contract, he insisted that I was with her constantly: on the preparations and at all tournaments. Hard, but I was not sorry. This is a new experience for me. However, I would like to return to the men's tennis.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/more-sports/tom-tebbutt/the-hawk-eyes-finest-hour/article1557597/

The WTA Tourĺs policy of allowing on-court coaching results in some brutal conversations between coaches and players ľ usually uni-directional from coach to player.

During the second set of her loss to Shahar Peer in Stuttgart last week, Dinara Safina made a request to speak with her coach Zeljko Krajan. The Safina ľ Krajan sessions have gradually evolved into an almost comical routine, with him constantly haranguing her. ôWhere is your brain now?ö Krajan said to Safina. ôWithout finishing the shot, you cannot hit a winner. You cannot play like this, itĺs almost like tanking.ö

Safina, playing her first event in three months following a back injury, went on to lose 6-3, 6-2 to Peer.

Focus, please

In the Sydney International final last week, Marat's little sister Dinara Safina called her coach Zeljko Krajan onto the court after the second set, which she had won, for no real reason at all. A feisty conversation ensued between player and coach. Safina accused her coach of "joking" and "talking" with those courtside when he should have been concentrating more on her tennis. Krajan, who was miked up by Channel Seven, said he hoped the candid conversation was captured by the microphones again. He told the Herald this week most of the time he is called on court it is usually for a good reason, but last time he said Safina just wanted to whinge. "I hope they're not going to go on with that [miking up]," Krajan said, laughing. "It's OK when you're talking tennis. But she calls you on court and she starts complaining, and you go on to tell her what to do with tennis, but then she tells you what's going wrong around the court, which has nothing to do with tennis. The wrong part . . . you're trying to concentrate and she's going off about something else. No problem. Because she called me after the second set in the final, not about tennis advice, but because she had 6-2, she just wanted to complain about something; which is not a good thing for me."

James LaRosa used the word SACKED ie permanent.

Okay, peeps, everyone breathe. :)

James LaRosa is not on site and has no special knowledge of anything. I know this because I am his source for Dinara gossip. All he did was repeat what Vladas Lasitskas said, which was not that anything was permanent.

The Google translation of the article is pretty good, but I'll go ahead and do a direct one just for confirmation's sake. :)

Russian tennis player Dinara Safina has decided to take a break from working with Croatian coach Zeljko Krajan. Safina worked with Krajan for the last three years and under his guidance became the #1 player in the world, won the silver medal at the Olympics in Bejing, and reached the final of the French Open in 2008 and 2009.

At the time of the current French Open, Safina is being assisted by the Argentinian Gaston Etlis. The 35-year-old from Buenos Aires during his career reached the top 20 in doubles and won 4 tournaments.

I guess the thing that gives me the most pause is Dejan being gone, too. There's no real need for that unless she wants to change her team up completely. Or I guess if she decided to get a straight-on tennis trainer. But the most bizarre thing of all is that she would decide to fire her coach the week before a Slam... which is really what makes me think that there's something else going on.

All will reveal itself. :) I mean, don't get me wrong, if Zeljko's gone forever, I'll be totally sad. But I can't think of a good reason to say "taking a break" and "at this time X is helping her" if it's permanent. Although understandably the coach fill-in might not be permanent because it's so rushed.

But there's seriously zero reason to ever fire your coach the week before a Slam. It's too weird, even for a Safin.

- Of course, I was criticized and praised by my parents. These are the people who were with me always, and naturally, they know me better than anyone. Probably not very correct to have around 100 advisers, when you have a coach. I try to trust your coach Zeljko Krayanu, listen to him, but always expressing their opinions.

Safina dumps coach?

The first hint came when we saw Dinara Safina out practicing with Hernan Gumy, the South American who not only is Ernests Gulbis's current coach, but her brother Marat's former coach.

Nothing's official yet, but the word around the grounds is that she parted ways with cranky Croat Zeljko Krajan, and now is working with Argentine former Tour player Gaston Etlis.

Here's a translation of a Russian article about it (http://translate.google.ca/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.sport-express.ru%2F2010-05-22%2F363469%2F&sl=ru&tl=en). Is Etlis is a permanent replacement? Probably not.

The split, after three years of rather emotional collaboration, comes at a pretty crucial time for Safina, who reaped a lot of rewards during last year's clay-court season and needs to do well in Paris.

From our perspective, it's long overdue.

Perhaps the dynamic worked well at the beginning (and it did get her to No. 1), but we always felt Krajan's hard-pushing, negative attitude ended up hurting the sensitive Safina, who has worked so, so hard to get where she is.

Just watching her in practice, every single stroke is a major effort. Nothing comes easily.

We'd have brother Marat come out and coach her for a year, give her some quality time with a brother she didn't see that much of growing up. But those would be selfish reasons.

Safina did have some pretty interested spectators during her practice session ľ Gulbis himself, and his father Ainars.

For some reason, having seen Papa Gulbis only on TV, we were surprised at how tall he is. He's at least as tall as his son.

Safina won't be playing her first-round match against Kimiko Date-Krumm (you can bet Open Court will be there) until Tuesday.

She might take comfort in knowing that Date-Krumm had her calf fairly heavily wrapped during practice.

No new information, but it seems to be finally hitting the Croatian news sites.

END OF COOPERATION
Broke 'love' between Krajan and Safina

Zeljko Krajan no longer coach of Russian tennis player Dinara Safina, and his role until the end of the tournament in Roland Garros over the Argentinian Gaston Etlis.

After two and half years, broke the love between Zeljka Krajan and Dinara Safina. Russia after the injury, for which she was also a questionable career, did not return to the desired shape. She is currently ninth in the WTA rankings, which could not satisfy her ambitions.

In Paris he would lead the former Argentine Gaston Etlis tennis player, and it is not known whether the cooperation will continue after the second Grand Slam season.

While she led the Krajan, Safina was the first player of the world and played in two finals of Roland Garros and one Australian Open.

Krajan: Yes, I interrupted with Safina, but some of it to publish the first

Although they wanted to, could not conceal from the Russian media, fine cooperation. On the eve of Roland Garros, after two years of successful cooperation, the Croatian coach Zeljko Krajan and Russian tennis player Dinara Safina broke the contract.

He confirmed to us this is the Krajan, which we have instead of Paris, caught in Varazdin.

- The truth is that we stop the cooperation, but the duration of the Roland Garros do not want to comment on. In addition, let's first ads Dinara and her manager, and only then I can make out - it was Krajan abstained.

Under the leadership of Krajan, Safina has achieved the best ranking of his career. In fact, last April, and briefly sat atop the first WTA world rankings, while the year ended in second place.

I guess that's it then :sobbing:

"After two and a half years of our mutual communication was somewhat compromised, as the results, and partly because of injuries. Simply put, this is perhaps the best decisions. But it is a shame that now, after six months of its treatment with a back injury, did not have opportunity to continue to work in a way that brings results and Safin matches, "commented the utter termination of cooperation with Safin, currently the ninth player in the world.

From Drew's "As it happens"

5.20 pm: Here’s what Dinara Safina had to say after her defeat: “First I thought I was doing pretty good, but then I got tight and I lost the motion. I started to basically get tight and the serve started to make more double faults. Of course you want to win, and especially I saw her, she's cramping. Then I just started to look at her instead of thinking what I was doing until 4‑1. And then I just… I was more thinking about her than about myself, what I had to do. I lost the momentum.”

She has also recently split with coach, long-time mentor and good mate of brother Marat Zeljko Krajan, and had only good things to say about the departed “Z”: “After Madrid I took a decision to stop. Definitely he did the best job than everybody could make with me. He brought me to No. 1 in the world. I mean, not him: together we came together to No. 1. But I decided that I wanted to stop, and that's it. I won't say anything. I don't want to comment anything else.”

Her final comments? “I will have to swallow this loss and keep on moving. I was in worse situations, and I mean, that's life. After rain, always sun comes. I will do my best.”

Poor Dinara. Such talent, and then either her head or her body lets her down.

Croatian tennis experts about the reasons for the break with biÜvom first tennis player the world

Krajan: Communication with Dinara be violated

News of the termination of cooperation between the Russian tennis player Dinara Safina and her Croatian coach Zeljko Krajan, they 'broke' the Russian media, confirmed himself Varazdin.

- After two and a half years of our mutual communication was a little disturbed, a few results, and a few injuries and it just might be the best decision. A pity that now, six months after its treatment with a back injury, and when it is finally resolved, we had the opportunity to continue to work in a way that brings results, and which corresponds to Safina. Anyway, Safina wish you luck and success later in his career - said Zeljko Krajan termination of cooperation with Dinara Safina, who is currently the ninth player in the world.

Krajan the Safina of 17 places on the WTA list led to the best in the world and three Grand Slam finals, one Australian Open and twice at Roland Gaross.

Krajan now expects a short break, and his plans are still tied to tennis.

- I showed that I can work on that level, because I brought the number 17 Safina to the best players in the world. Working with Safina was my great school, a lot of that I had the opportunity to learn and I will be even more secure for the next deal - concluded Krajan.

Many have doubted the possibility of Dinara Safina and few who saw her at the top. And only when she came into the hands of young Croatian experts managed to 'explode'. I then caused a series of controversies Safina in the tennis world. All power to it were attacked by American sisters Serena and Venus Williams claiming he does not deserve to be the best and that is on top only because of the bad points in the women's tennis.

However, much more credit for its place at the top is Krajan, but his first assistant in the 'project Safina', the former sprinter Split Dejan Vojnovic who was responsible for physical preparation of Russians.

- Honestly, all odvilo in the last few days and it is clear that I am in this package to Krajan, but still waiting for official confirmation from the manager. I am aware that we will soon work on another job - said Vojnovic.

Together with Krajan?

- It is possible. I spoke to him and said he counts on me in the future. But, you know what the tennis players and tennis players. One of them may not require fitness trainer - Vojnovic said.

However, their work has not gone unnoticed. Safina led to the 'units' to find a new job should not be difficult.

- I had, for example, in January of an offer from a Top 10 players, and from her manager, but I refused because I worked with Safina. I believe that we will soon be back in operation. But everything is still fresh. With Safin we were Stuttgart and Madrid, and then we parted. She moved from Spain to Paris, and we toward Croatia - described to us the 'crossroads' Vojnovic.

Thanks, Sarah. A+ sleuth skills today. :)

Dejan. :hearts:

I really only want Zeljko to get a new WTA player to see Dejan. I’m shallow like that.

I had, for example, in January of an offer from a Top 10 players, and from her manager, but I refused because I worked with Safina.

Hmmm…we pretty much know it’s not either Williams sister. I doubt Elena or Sveta would ever do that. I’ll go with JJ cause I like to blame everything on her. :)

With Safin we were Stuttgart and Madrid, and then we parted. She moved from Spain to Paris, and we toward Croatia - described to us the 'crossroads' Vojnovic.

Thanks for that brief game of “Where In The World is Dejan Vojnovic”. I’ll miss you most of all, Dejan. :)

In all honestly, I'm not sure if Jelena would be able to cope with someone like Zeljko coaching her. Still, if it means we'll have Z and Dejan back on the tour I'd gladly accept it. Heck, I'd even be happy if he coached Ana :o

- Before the season, you have changed the earth trainer, having parted with Croat Zeljko Krajan and going under the wing of the Argentine Gaston Etlis. Why is this change?

- We have decided to leave after Madrid. Zeljko at one time worked with me better than anyone could have in the world. I take off my hat to him: we both stepped on the first step of the rating, but ... I do not want to talk about it.

- There were no conflicts?

- Absolutely! We have very good relations.

- Why chose it for Attleys?

- After Madrid helped me a little Hernan Gumy (the last coach of Marat Safin. - Approx. Ed.). He told me and advised Etlis.

- This is a temporary or long-term relationship?

- And when you start dating a girl, do you think, how long will you meet her? - Asked me Dinara. And without giving a positive answer, and also noted that sexual relations and relationships between players and coaches not seem the same, she continued: - You just try to: get - will not work.

7.05 pm: Out onto Chatrier come Nadia Petrova and Aravane Rezai. The Russian wins the toss and elects to serve. These two have met twice before, Nads winning both in 2008 (one of them here, in the first round. Aravane has indeed yet to take a set off the tall Russian). Nadiaĺs coach is called Vado Platenik ľ letĺs hope thatĺs all he is (i.e. platonic. Weĺre all convinced that the reason free-falling Dinara Safina has ousted her coach is because they were more than Platenik, sorry platonic).
