From her post match interview after the Peng match

Q. Today we were talking to Kim, and we said who has really made a difference in their game since you've been gone. She talked about you and how in all aspects from your style to your physique you're totally different. How would you say you've chanced since she's been retired?

DINARA SAFINA: Well, definitely, you know, I been working very hard. You know, I would say since I'm working with this coach I changed a lot. You know, he's the person that I trust, you know, and I had to do some changes.

I mean, to say honestly I been overweight, so he said, Dinars, you need to lose weight. So we find doctor to help me like a dietician, so I have a dietician now.

Another thing I needed to improve was the physical, so I been working with the fitness coach at that time. Now I don't work with him anymore. Still I think he did an amazing job with me. I made such a big jump, you know. So we're always looking for something to get me better.

I trust this person, and I know that he doesn't stop from improving me and he's always looking for the best for me. That's important.

Zac and Dinars :hearts:

I was sure that she would call him too. I think that she is preparing for when she has to face it alone. It's a good strategy to practice but she really needed a pep talk after the 1st set. She didn't look at him nearly as much as she usually did. Which only means that she didn't look at him after every point.

vanúss
Aug 17th, 2009, 12:23 AM
that's what i was thinking too ! I was expecting him to yell at her when she finally did call him and ask her why she didn't did that sooner  it's like EVERYONE expected her to do it right then

You know what i really think it is ! And i'm not saying that because she lost so i want to find an excuse for it because losing wasn't necessary to prepare the USO  but i think that right now they are all about the USO ! Like Emilie Loit said after Dina did one great dropshot , it's something new from her game she couldn't recall when she did as many as she did in the last three days and she went on to say like Dina said in Portoroz that she still had many things to improve and that it's a good thing since she's already #1 right now !
Like Z said if she has to lose a couple of matches Third round or Final to get better , i'm 700.000% fine with it

:haha: Ghostbusters and then Staying Alive? Yep, the Safin Demon was not going anywhere :p

Love her tactics to get the coaching timeout over and done with, she drinks her water, wripes her face and picks at her nails and hands. And that sidewards pleading glance at Lynn during the middle was not lost on me

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/im-no-1-in-the-world-and-i-dont-care-about-anything-else-safina-says/article1255407/

There is a surefire way to turn sunny Dinara Safina into someone more sombre - bring up the subject of her being ranked No. 1 because of her solid performances despite not having a Grand Slam title among her results.

It is a rather tedious topic for her just about everywhere she goes, as she is contrasted with Serena Williams, who has won three Grand Slams but no other WTA Tour titles.

Yesterday it surfaced again during pretournament chats she had with media at the Rogers Cup.

"I have no problem with it," she said, giving a blunt, pre-emptory response. "I'm No. 1 in the world and I don't care about anything else."

Safina has played in eight finals in 2009, including losing to Williams 6-0, 6-3 at the Australian Open and 6-4, 6-2 to Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros. Safina has won three titles. So far this year, Williams has played in only three finals, with her two victories coming at Wimbledon and in Australia.

In her family, Safina is not the only one who has grown weary of the questioning of her legitimacy to be No. 1. Last week at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, her brother, Marat Safin, a former No. 1 (2000) himself, gave a spirited defence of his sister.

"Nobody believed she was going to be No. 1 in the world, nobody believed two or three years ago that she was even going to be top 10," he said. "A lot of people are giving her trouble. Okay, she's No. 1 in the world but she has never won a Grand Slam. But she's there, trying.

"I'm really proud of her, and I tell everybody to fuck off basically in every one of [my] press conferences. She would too but she's too polite."

He also praised her work ethic.

"For her, everything is a battle. She's such a hard worker. She spends so much time on the court."

The six-foot Dinara does not have the fluid athleticism of the 6-foot-4 Marat.

Nor does she have his crackerjack two-handed backhand, but she has powerful, if somewhat mechanical, ground strokes and a potent, if sometimes wayward, serve.

Safina's mother, tennis coach Raouza Islanova, has been a big influence on both her and Marat. But it has been more an inborn drive that has been responsible for her success.

"It's hard to say that I was expecting it," reigning French Open champion and fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova said about Safina's climb to the top of the rankings, "but she's a hard worker. She can work as hard as anybody and she's very professional."

Though Safina has earned nearly $9-million (U.S.) in career prize money, that is not what motivates her. "It's just the passion for the sport," she insists. "I do it not for the money, the money comes after. For me it's love for tennis. I really love to compete in this sport I've been playing since I was a kid."

Much like Marat, she does not hide her emotions on court, appearing at times tortured with frustration. As with Marat, there is a compelling train-wreck-about-to-happen aspect to watching her.

With the tour's new rules permitting on-court coaching, the miked conversations between her and her coach, Zeljko Krajan of Serbia, have become must-see viewing for television viewers. Usually he harangues her to play more aggressively and she sits sullenly listening.

"He pushes me because he knows how I am," she said. "But I take it because I know he wants the best for me."

The Safin family humour comes out when she is asked if she can ever laugh with Krajan when he comes out on the court. "Never," she instantly answers with a big smile. "I wish that for once he could say, 'Oh, you're doing good.' But when it's good, I never call him [onto the court]. Only when it's bad.

"Like yesterday [on Sunday, Safina lost 6-4, 6-2 in the final in Cincinnati to Jelena Jankovic], he said, 'You only call me when something is terrible, it's already too late.' He tried to help, but I knew what I had to do but I didn't manage to do it."

Unlike that all too predictable question about the rankings she is so often asked, Safina was happy to respond to an inquiry about the interactions with her coach, and more than willing to acknowledge that they can appear comical for those observing from the outside.

Emilie Loit kept saying how intense and funny their on court coaching usually is and that it would be very interresting for her to call him

All of the people who hate on court coaching sit around laughing their asses off when Dina and Z are together on court. It's just the most ridiculous thing ever. She never seems to not be paying attention and he is usually ranting and raving about something.

I got the impression from the commentators who were explaining the rules that the coach OR the player could initiate the on court session.. Pam said that when she asked him why he didn't go on his own he just shrugged his sholders! Did you see how she just angrily waved the racquet toward him when she wanted him to come down?

:rolls: Oh dear , Dina would destroy me

10am near a practice court . Dinara Safina and Zeljko Krajan along with the third wheel Marko just got there to start their first Practice of the day . Vanessa Cotineau is as always not far away from them sitting in the stands watching them all closely with a grin on her face . Dinara keep looking at her wondering what the hell she wants again . Three minutes later , big surprise the Russian is not patiente , is going over to Vanessa .
Dinara : Hey you what's your problem ?!

Vanessa : Excuse me ? ( smiling happy that Dinara finally talk to her  )
Dinara : Don't mock me , i see your game you keep following us around !
Vanessa : what's wrong with that ? Am i not allowed to watch you practice ?
Dinara : You are but i forbid you to ever watch Zeljko again get it ? He's married !!! :fiery:
Vanessa is laughing out loud : i know that but do you ? :p
Dinara has enough and start hitting Vanessa , the cat fight is ON !!!

Dinara self-destructed.

Her coach left her after she lost the 2nd set she was pleading with him not to leave

Sad, if true.

Of course she self-destructed she depends on Z too much. She needs to realize that he cannot help her when she is out there. It's all up to her and she really needs to start believing that she can do it on her own. I just want to give her a

Agree 100%. And we keep saying this in here over and over again. So how come that basically every fan of hers (or even everyone who follows tennis) has figured that out by now but Dinara and Z can't? Or when they have why don't they work on that problem?

I would think that he would get paid win or lose since he basically leaves his family for 10 months out of the year to travel with her. Only paying him if she wins is a ridiculous notion.

I was there and while I can't confirm if she pleaded with him to stay since we were nowhere near close enough to hear them, I can definitely confirm he left. Although, it wasn't after the 2nd set. He came down after the 2nd set and then he came down again when Rezai broke her in the 3rd but he went back to his seat then. So he was definitely there for part of the third set. I would guess he left somewhere around the 6th or 7th game of the set.

The CRAZIEST thing is how Dinara got a coaching violation when he wasn't even there. She yelled to the umpire "my coach isn't here!" and pointed to where Marko (aw, Marko) was sitting alone. And thank God for Marko. Guy is possibly a saint. He sat there the whole time cheering his ass off. Of course the one time Dinara has someone encouraging her in her box she gets a coaching violation for it.

I don't think they don't know; if he's willing to leave her on court (which he did during that match-- was there with nikeshirtoffug), he knows she has to do it without him. I think it's a personal/business relationship problem-- as a coach, you might know the best thing is to leave your student to fend for themselves, win or lose, but it's personally very very hard to actually do that. Hopefully after USO they'll work on that a little bit more, because she's got to quit relying on him.

Yeah, that's the craziest thing I ever heard. I'd bet cash money he gets a percentage of her winnings by contract, or they settled on a flat salary. Nothing else would make any sense.

A couple of pics from Toronto that I took during practice yesterday. If anyone wants larger versions, just let me know.

The blonde is Dinara's hitting partner for the session, who was Russian and seemed super nervous. Zeljko gave him directions at the start (she was only practicing returns) and then at each break he would ask if he was doing okay. He also got the assignment of picking up all the balls with Marko (Zeljko helped for like a second) while Dinara relaxed. At the end of the session he thanked Dinara and then took off on his own. It was super cute.

He is an ass. He left her early in the 3rd set. Is this normal? Do coaches usually storm out of a match, while a player begs "Don't go, stay, stay, stay, stay!" It was the saddest thing. I hope she shows up to the USO minus this idiot. I was sitting really close to him, and I can't tell you how many times during the match she would stare at him, looking for encouragement, or just a smile, whatever, and he would be looking at the ground, totally on purpose. I just don't get it.

Nothing new in the way he acted  Especially since he came down on court two times and still she was playing like shit , so yeah Z go ahead and smile at her :o
Now for the pleading part , i hope it's not true but a part of me think that she could totally do that while the other part wants to think the contrary  But if that match didn't taught her anything i don't know what will , but by seeing her reaction afterwards it maybe finally made it to her brain and the timing would be perfect ! *fingers crossed*

I wouldn't be that surprised if she was begging him to stay, especially hearing it now from two different people. But, truth to tell, she was playing fine after he left-- she had game point to get back on serve in the 3rd-- until she got that bizarre coaching violation. That must just have been the last straw for her somehow.

she really did beg. She was getting her ball for her serve, so she was facing an entrance/exit in the corner. so she saw when he got out of the players box to leave through that entrance and all of a sudden you hear her plead "stay stay stay stay" helplessly. He didn't even look back. I think the tough love works up to a point, but this has crossed the line. btw, when she gets inside her head... and when she looks up at him for support, and he's always looking away from her... i honestly think that just makes it worse. Then she just looks at him even more. But I agree, she looks at her box far more than other players. Or maybe it's just that when she looks, it's a lot more obvious, because it's like laser beams.

Yeah, I totally wanted to hug her. She is lovely. this is the first time I saw her live, and she is just so fit, and she has the most beautiful arms and shoulders!

I don't really understand what Z wanted to show her with him leaving, what he was intending to do.
On the other hand, Dinara begging him not to go is pathetic, sorry to say this, but that's my opionion. When he feels he has to go because she's playing so bad or whatever, she should say: "Fuck you, I'm the one playing anyway. What do I need you for?"

This is what she said about it in her post match interview

Q. You called your coach down before the third set and then halfway through the third set. What were you asking him to help you with?

DINARA SAFINA: How he can help me if I'm not doing anything. I have a game plan, I step on the court, and I do completely the opposite thing.

Just for strategy even he left the court, because he says, It makes no sense that I'm sitting there, because you don't do the things. So better lose and do your things. At least you are moving forward. But when I'm telling you one thing and you do completely the opposite thing and you're losing, you're just moving backwards.

No, because I didn't notice for a few minutes that Zeljko was gone. I was probably trying to hide under my seat at that point. Christina and I were joking how guilty he must have felt when he somehow caused a coaching violation. From last year

http://www.tennis-plus.ru/archive/2008/09/90

We have offered several players to ATP and WTA Tour, in different stages of their careers, reflect on the theme of źMe and my coach╗. Some of them have already found the źprofessional half╗, someone else to find.

Elena Vesnina, 22 years, #46 in the world, sportswoman, who searches for the possibility to improve your results:

- The last few years I have trampled on the ground, while others are in the best źforty╗, not bad like. But after three years, wants to take a step up in źtwenty╗. Therefore from last year we search for a coach. They found it, but another girl intercepted it, federation helps to pay to her trainer. Now I and my agent is again searching for, conduct negotiationsů I want to pull tactics, psychology. If you start winning matches, it adds confidence to the eyes. Very obvious case - Dinara Safina, after which Berlin did not know it was a totally different person, confident, fearless. In the past year, she had two coaches for the Chief - Hans Gyunhard, which seems to have only two tournaments with it and went, and Zeljko Krajan which performed the role of sparring assistant. Dinara stopped Zeljko - was seen that guy's head works, and she believed him. It is calm, always said to her that she is a very good player, that it is necessary only to believe, to work and on no account to depart to itself, to the depression. It morally healthily supported it, but this exactly Dinara and it was not sufficient. He was under 30, he played in the Tour and for the Croatian national team, knows what her work. There are two basic criteria - that the trainer would approach to you according to the character and understood your game. Spaniards, for example, can teach the cheat for the back line and run for three hours. This is not my game, I need people who will build on the strengths and weaknesses. I do not need someone special, like Brad Gilbert. The coach of that name immediately and the price sky-high room. It remains to go through trial, error and bruises - to watch different coaches. The same business.

Zeljko is stocky. Christina and I have discussed this before but I think he tends to look larger in person because while Dinara is taller than him, heĺs kinda wide. He has huge shoulders for his height. The thing that makes Dinara look so much taller than him (well, besides the fact that she is  ) is that sheĺs super long limbed and heĺs bulkier.

Wow, I cannot believe I put so much thought into that just now. :)

Definitely Serbian. You can see SERBIA on the back of his jacket in one of the pics. I donĺt know who he was and honestly I didnĺt put 10 seconds of thought into it. I was much more excited about what was going down on the left side of the picture.

He seemed to know Marko more than Dejan, which I guess makes sense since Marko is Serbian.

Yeah def stocky. They come tend to come in that size or insanely gangly and tall in Croatia.

Ahh well Marko needs a serbian friend to keep him company :p Is he not the hitting partner from Portoroz? It would kinda make sense to have him over [but we haven't seen Dina hit with him yet] cos the courts are similar to USO and Marko is getting lonely :p

The saddest thing is to think of how much time we've spent actually discussing that. But yeah, everyone always says Dinara has these super huge shoulders, but next to Zeljko she looks downright narrow. I still never think the height difference looks that big in person, but who knows, maybe that's all about his hair construction. :p

Do you guys know the show "Pardon The Interruption"? It's an American sports talk show where they discuss different sports items in a short time. Anyway, today I was surprised to see Dinara as one of their topics. I thought it was going to be about her struggling but it was actually about Zeljko. One of the hosts was really teeing off on him.

Anyway, I vacillate between thinking that the negativity actually "works" and that it's a relationship I will just never fully understand to wanting to hit him over the head with something.

Dear God, they're getting a lot of play on ESPN lately.

Anyway, I don't know what to think about it either. I mean, it's certainly true that there are athletes who feed more off negative energy than positive, and I think she's probably one of them. But I just can't help but think lately that the effectiveness of the tough love strategy has run its course with them, and he needs to try to at least be more neutral, if not downright positive. It may not be anything that's really changed between them, it may just be that she has so much other pressure on her now-- last year he could be negative because everyone else was relentlessly positive about her, now the press and other players are really picking on her and him being negative too may be the last straw.

(Some days I'd like to hit him over the head with something, too, but I fear his hair gel would serve as a protective shield. :p)

Mad Professor

Zeljko Krajan: In Melbourne earlier this year, Krajan seemed to be just what Dinara Safina needed: An upbeat, patient, competent coach who could coax her out of bad moods and drive home key lessons in practice. Seven months later, Krajan looks to be the worst man for the job. As Safina misses, screams and struggles to hold serve, Krajan, seated in Safina's box, shakes his head, covers his face, shouts critical remarks, and even laughs ruefully. Safina can't be the easiest player to coach, but there must be someone who can take charge of her career without all the negative energy. Let's hope she finds that someone soon.

They're both to blame. And even more when they don't realize that they have to change something in the way they work and interact together.

Yes they are both to blame , but people seems to think that her getting ride of Zeljko would be the best decision but i disagree :bs:
It's up to them to fix what's wrong , whatever what we/they think it is !
I'm in the "wait and see" mode until Beijing :p

But you just look from the outside it seems to be the best solution (honestly I would have beaten him with my rackets so many times when he sits there complaining, shaking his head, etc. uncountable time :p) until you hear her talking about him. She has to become more independent from him and realize that she is the one who is playing, winning and the one who got to no.1. And it's Krajan's job to tell her that - since she doesn't want to take outside advice. Until this happens I don't see major improvement.
She will make QFs, SFs, finals and probably win a few. But she won't win big, imo, when it continues like this.

Sometimes she looks like she tries but cannot succeed , like at Wimbledon during her match against Sabine .

I agree that from the outside it may be the solution but i just hate it when someone tries to get me an idea in my head absolutely persuaded that it's the right one , so i guess that's the thing i feel like they try to do with Dinara and it makes me :fiery:

But i'd rather debate over this than her #1 ranking ;)

Maybe it was in the Fates that Z would only coach Dina to the level that she is at now. But I'm just wondering what kind of a character would be able to get her to wins slam finals, because I love Z, his antics/demeanour/the dynamics of the two are pure gold for me.

I kind of agree about Z coaching Dina to this level. It seems that most of what holds her back is her head and her need to prove to him that she is worthy of his time. She needs to find a way to get over both of those things.
I don't know who will be sadder about a Dina/Z split me or her. Dina obviously doesn't trust easily so if she does get a new coach it would have to be someone that she trusts which may take a while. I have a feeling that everyone else will go before Z. Next year is going to be interesting.

/for once, i'm being serious
It's not just the player who has hard times. If the man barely can see his family and kid, and has to travel all time, that's kinda difficult for almost everybody. And together with somebody 24/7 who can't tie her shoes, well not so amusing every time. So i can't blame Z for everything, even he act's like he is freakin' Napoleon... It's Dina's turn i guess.
/serious mode off

I agree with Norbi :o Z can only do so much for her, and I think his niche is coaching from the bottom to the top. NOT remaining at the top. I don't think she needs to ditch him, because he has spent a lot of time and effort on her, but I think she should expand her team :help:

I would be crushed :sobbing: They have to deal with their issues , they don't necessarily need to "break up" , her problem won't disappear with someone else than Z since she'll look for a coach and still not for a sport psychologist .

I agree Norbi she has to give up Dubai and come to freaking Paris in february instead :o

Women's tennis is a lonely sport

High pressure. Coached by men, live in a cocoon

By STEPHANIE MYLES, The GazetteSeptember 8, 2009 4:05 AM

The thesaurus has been thumbed to death during the U.S. Open, as people search for new adjectives to describe Melanie Oudin.

Feisty, gutsy and spunky. Fresh and refreshing, cute and adorable. The next saviour of American tennis.

The 17-year-old's run to the quarterfinals has rescued a women's event that's been as excruciating as a root canal.

But her success is also directly related to the current state of the women's game.

Oudin is where she is because she's fresh meat. She doesn't yet feel the pressure, hasn't yet played with so much at stake, hasn't yet suffered the wear and tear on her body and emotions caused by years of top-level tennis.

She isn't yet afraid to lose, or afraid to win. She just hits the ball and competes.

All credit to her; she's obviously promising. But what Oudin has mostly done is put the tennis ball in the court, run like hell, hang in there, and watch her opponents blow their brains out.

Jennifer Capriati was once refreshing and happy-go-lucky, too, remember? Ana Ivanovic was sweet and unaffected. Jelena Jankovic was sassy, smiling and spunky.

These days, you feel as though you're peeking in on the painful breakup of a teenage romance. That's how raw the emotions are. You can't even call it a collective choke; it's so far beyond that. First Ivanovic imploded after an effortless rise to No. 1. Then Jankovic began making excuses and searching - for what, we're not sure. Dinara Safina's reign at No. 1 has been fodder for Freud.

Even Venus Williams, once considered one of the strongest competitors out there, has faltered.

The only ones we're not worried about are Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. They're the only two.

The women on the WTA Tour have always been copycats, whether it was the grunting, the turning their back to the court between points, their brief flirtations with that mysterious thing called the volley.

But like the flu bug that sweeps through the Canadiens' dressing room every season, it's as though the pheromones have conspired to create a collective bottomless pit of pressure too deep for the women to climb out of.

This is what women do; we put major pressure on ourselves to achieve. While the boys are sitting in the back row in high school, joking around, checking out girls, the girls are copiously taking notes, trying to get A's, aiming to please the teacher.

Those who have children try to be Mom of the Century. Those who have kids, a husband and a career twist themselves into multitasking pretzels trying to be superwoman.

The women's game is so competitive these days, so lucrative, the rewards open to anyone with the guts to take them, that there has never been so much at stake.

But the women are coached by men. They practice with men. Reporters and agents are mostly male. And the women are expected - unfairly - to compete like men.

They can't; they're not wired that way. And when the wiring goes awry, their entourages have no answers.

On the way up, everything is golden. Whatever their technical flaws - the abject lack of serving technique that is at the root of the plague of double faults we've been seeing is just one area - it doesn't matter. The girls are winning.

But this generation has been locked into a safe little cocoon from an early age - often home-schooled, isolated from their peers, with no outside interests and no means to develop the life skills they'll need at crunch time.

Crunch time is now. And the top women look as helpless as infants trying to cope.

It makes me crazy when I see a coach like Zeljko Krajan, who works with Safina. He's negative, unforgiving. When his charge is melting down, when she desperately needs to look up and see a smile, a fist pump, something that says "I believe in you, no matter what," she gets nothing.

He looks disdainful. And he's hardly the only one.

The Croatian was a journeyman who boasted a 9-28 career record. He played two Grand Slam matches. What would he know about it?

It's to the point where you want the top women to ditch their parents, coaches and entourages for a week and take off together, to the fanciest spa on the planet.

A week of pampering, sharing war stories, girl bonding with the only other humans who can relate to their angst, would do wonders.

That would be half the battle, because they all look pretty alone right now - never more than when they're surrounded by 20,000 people.

But they shouldn't invite Oudin. Why burst her bubble? She'll learn all about it soon enough.

I think that Dina is one person who would benefit greatly from having a woman in her camp. As much as I love looking at the eye candy in her box I really think that she should look into that.

Focus on Mental Game

As a result, many coaches choose to focus on psychological improvement. Borja Uribe, a coach who works with 24-year-old Spanish player Daniel Gimeno-Traver, says he has been working all summer to get his player to toss the ball in the air more consistently, but is most focused on making Mr. Gimeno-Traver tougher.

"Technically he can improve, but the most important part is mental, to control his emotions better." Zelko Krajan, the coach for Dinara Safina, the world's top-ranked female player, who could be seen agonizing in the stands as she nearly lost in the first round, says tennis is more like boxing than golf.

"There is another player you are trying to do better than, and that makes it very difficult." Ms. Safina lost in the third round and has never won a Grand Slam.

On flickr (where I saw the photo) you can see the tattoo a little clearer. It's Roman numerals and all I can make out is the end MMVII which is 2007. I'm assuming, since she's two, it's Chiara's birthday. Or maybe he also got married in 2007.

Or maybe the day he met Dinara.
