The end of this Croatian interview (http://www.slobodnadalmacija.hr/Tenis/tabid/86/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/63102/Default.aspx) has a smaller interview with Zeljko. The Dinara part (which I'll also post in the news thread) translates horribly but the Zeljko part is not bad.

But the main mystery solved is that Z-2 is Marko Bukic, who I've heard mentioned before but never saw. I'll be damned if I can find anything on him on google. :)

Lars Hjarrand, Dinara Safina's coach claims that in the past three months since the best the world has not changed much.
- Regarding the media pressure and stress about it all the more. Expectations are great in every tournament, every day you have a bookmark, and it is increasingly difficult. Little it was a new one, because it is not seen as number one, not being as Sarapa. I lost a little in the beginning of all this, but now a lot easier. Not even to the point of self-confidence, but now it is OK - he said we utter.

At the tournaments there are two other associates.
- To fit the charge of Israel Ronan Bega, a physiotherapist is Bukic Marko from Serbia who has worked with swimmers Milorad Cavic.

Croatian tennis player?
- Unfortunately, there are a lot of track. Petra Martic now plays on the WTA tournaments, but I was still well-informed.

Where do you see for 20 years?
- I do not know, nor for two to three years. Academy, a club, two or three players. Far. After her career I would like to definitely try in the men's tennis.

And what are the chances of Croatia in the Davis Cup semifinals against the Czech Republic?
- It will be difficult, just because I think that the substrate is 51:49 for us. Stepanek and Berdych are still top world players and must not be undervalued.

TRAINER IGOR ŐARIĆ

I was prepared for trophies Safinu fitness and mentally

- Zac called me (Zeljko Krajan, note. A) and asked if I know of a fitness trainer for Dinara Safina, which has just been turned cooperate with our former athletes Dejan Vojnovic. I told him that he gave me a little time to raspitam. Called me right away the next day and suggested that since the beginning of April to the end of Wimbledon we work together with Safina. I did a lot of thought - we say the former Croatian national team Igor Saric discovering that began its quarterly co-operation with the first tennis player the world, during which Safina won two big tournaments (Rome and Madrid), played in the finals in Roland Garros semifinals at Wimbledon.

- Although I know a lot about it, fitness training is not my specialty. However, because these are many other areas. Practically, together with my utter was with her on the ground - we have kept mental training, vje×bali stretching, relaxation and individualisation. Results were excellent, all but the final of Roland Garros. Then it was her panic. All of it, and it alone, expect to win Paris tournament, and finally came to the first Grand Slam. Created its own pressures too, and lost the Kuznetsova, although the better of her showgirl - convincing Saric.

- I am sure that when you win first Grand Slam, win a few of them. Is simply very good players. Particular attention is dedicated to the mental preparations, but Safina is always more stable than people think because it always look at her through her brother Marat. Dinara is naturally shy, not aggressive, and often times can play with fear and pull back behind the base line, which should not. The best is when you attack and dictated the game - explains Saric.

- Wimbledon and the results it was very good, never before did not go further than the 3rd chariot. House in London was reserved to the other Thursday, believing that they will not achieve any result. Semifinals beyond all expectations, and against Venus Williams, who five times won the tournament and that there feels like home, however, could not - is our real partner.

- Cooperation with Dinara was agreed ending Wimbledon. Its physical preparedness are now concerned about a former fitness coach Novak Djokovic. However, we remained in excellent relationships and is often heard. Reverting to his old role of tennis coach younger ages and the Croatian team to 16 to 18 years. In any case, it was a great experience.

How does a day Dinara Safina at the Grand Slam tournament?

- All depends upon whether the game that day or not. In the day when he was free to be around 7:30, then iste×e about 45 minutes, goes to breakfast, and then followed by training in the field and train - in the field or at the gym. Then we go into the club at lunch, and then follows the afternoon relaxing. After that, following training in the field, mental training and dinner. Dinara is going to sleep later than in 22 hours - reveals Saric.

ZAGREB - Zeljko Krajam incorporated a lot of himself in the success Dinara Safina in the last 18 months. Thanks Dejan Vojnovic she has never been physically prepared. You may also be just because of the above-mentioned two Dinara Safina in Saturday, the second All-Russia final in the history of Roland Garros, which have more supporters among the Croatian tennis lovers.

Zeljko is different from all

Only Svetlana Kuznetsova standing between Dinara and the first Grand Slam title, which would be the most successful tennis zaokru×io period in my life and I banged the final status of the seal the best tennis player in the world, which already enjoys some time.

Do not need dvojiti who will be the first man will thank you, lift you on Saturday, Suzanne Lenglen trophy. Already difficult it may take any address reporters not to mentions Äeljka utter.

- I love working with him. He is different from any of the coaches with whom I worked, and any coach that I know. Convinced me that I have impact for a number 1 and changed what was supposed to change - a way of thinking - hard Safina.

Dinara third attempt

To utter on Saturday could become the third Croatian coach with the Grand Slam title. Goran Prpic took the Ivo Majoli to triumph in Paris in'97. And John Tudor worked with Goran IvaniÜević Wimbledon in 2001. year. In the first two attempts Dinara failed to control his emotions. But today is the best in the world.

From April this year

Zeljko Krajan: Safina from the beginning I wanted to be the only coach

Now I laknulo when she came to the top. It was a lot of pressure and I saw it on her. One major goal is achieved, remaining Grand Slam - told us Zeljko Krajan, coach Dinara Safina.

Russia's incredible success, but he is the coach, brought him a lot of positive points in the world of tennis. Is there a new offer?

- No, not at all thinking about the potential offers, but now I watch a lot more respect. Much more cost my opinion and people from the world of tennis approaching me with questions - we discovered the utter.

Zakotrljala the story and how to edit Safinu tennis center for the preparation of vulnerability.

- Not very close to realization as to how to posvetiiti, and I, flying with her all over the world, simply do not have the time.

Sent to the main coach now arrived in the "race" with Heinz GŘnthardtom, longtime coach Steffi Graf.

- We started with her work together, but it simply does not function and my only condition was that I continue to work with her or to end cooperation. Selected me, and still we continue to cooperate truly fantastic - he said we utter.

Dinara brother Marat knows you already.

- They do not have much time for socializing, but sometimes we sit with him at dinner. I know him from his tennis days - told us at the end of utter.

Vojnovic: It was very stressful

Graduating from the athletic tennis former sprinter Dejan Vojnovic had a very high quality.

- Igor Saric, my colleague from the faculty and a friend of Lars Hjarrand connect me with utter. Dinara was pleased last year, I think I managed to make a good program and that the physical progress - told us Vojnovic.

Opportunity for socializing was little.

- Almost constantly we were on the road or in training. It's not an easy life. Is difficult and stressful. A preparation is much harder to make than in the Athletic, because there is no classical period of the assembly when the game throughout the year - compared with their sport tennis Dejan Vojnovic.

From Dinara's interview

Until recently, with utter and Safinu worked another Croatian coach. It is a Dejan Vojnovic, a former sprinter who was a fitness coach, the Russian tennis player.

- We have worked well until the end of the American tour, a month ago, after which we raziÜle. I requested some changes - we discovered Safina by Vojnovic physically very well prepared.

Interview with Željkom Krajanom

Željko Krajan of the 30-year Vraždinčan, which is the first coach in 2007, actress Dinara Safine world. With him, we met in Portoroz, which monitors its varovanko in the open championship of Slovenia. Krajan of the Rusinjo over when it was on the 17th WTA-site scale, under his leadership has occurred three times in the finals at major tournaments Quartet. He is aware that in such players as Dinare very patient and that his main job, to improve the tactical part of the game. It is often also a psychologist, because it is Safina, the world as the first player under constant pressure.

How to work with Dinaro Safino? We know that we can work with the best individuals rather difficult task.

If you would not have been a bit special, would not have been among the best. Often the svojeglavi and muhasti, but it is at that level of tennis quite normal
and with this I cope as a coach.

The Safin family has their mom a lot of words. Is true that the mother Dinara Safine recently much less present in the work of his daughter, which is for you, as a coach is likely to be good?

It is good for me, but this was not a condition that may not be near the mother, when I took over the work of the trainer. When I started working with Dinaro we have some time try to work together, but this is not funkcioniralo, it is more, the mother withdrew. Some of this is creating too much negative stuff, so we are after a lasu decided that it is better for all that the Dinaro work itself. It showed also the result, in this period to improve.

But Dinara is a once in the tournament very well, although the mother in Portorož.

Mom is in Portorož, because we have the tournament here 10 days already trained. She came to accept less of a father Dinara and is the main reason why the Rauza Portorož. This tournament is not just the largest in the world, it is all a bit easier.

I read that you are not changing their technique to play when you assume.

Technique does not make sense to change, since all life like a game and it would be too dangerous, that in its 23 years of changing technology. Why would you, if it is the first player the world. You can repair any detail, or to customize what the situation, otherwise it is more important taktičen part of the game. A good coach is able to adjust the player and, despite himself derives from a slightly different school of tennis, I am adapting to it and not change their techniques. It is possible to refine tactics game, only the technique of impact it is not changed.

What are the typical characteristics of a coach, when the top coaches such actresses as Dinara Safina? Must be a psychologist in the first place?

In any case I have to be very patient and understanding, because you have to be able to adjust the personal characteristics of the player by coach. During the coach and the player must establish a positive communication, to avoid friction, which may negatively affect the results of the players. It is important to find a way to both the player and the coach most benefit from one another.

I had some luck this BC because I was a 'sparing' partner, before I take over the city coach, so I Dinaro already knew somewhat. I knew what her answer and what not, so this is great help to our good relationship at the beginning of our common path.

What tasks do while traveling with Dinaro at various tournaments around the world? I guess you're not just a coach?

At the tournament, I Dinare practically everything. From his father, mother, brother, a psychologist ... Virtually all of what a man of ideas, but this is quite normal and our relationship is nothing special in the world of women's tennis. Maybe in this segment vary the Williams sisters, who are much more confident and also live in a different way outside the tennis courts. Otherwise, such a relationship between coaches and players a very common phenomenon.

What is the Williams sisters are different from Dinara Safine?

The main difference is that Williamsovi consider more 'male'. Their attitudes to the game and the sport itself is closer to thinking tenisačev than players like Dinara. Serena and Venus have a lot more self. Believe in their abilities, and also played strong tennis.

How much pressure you feel from the media, to Dinara has not won the tournament major Quartet, however, that the world number one tennis?

If the first player on the WTA, the scale of this pressure is always present. Otherwise our little mind, but the other shall not be expected, since it is still the best tennis player the world. It is essential that you Dinare itself does not create additional pressure and thus it is not charged. It is important to deal with this pressure and take advantage of in their favor. Speculate on the tennis and the most odmisliti pressure, since this is something normal and that monitored at every step of top tennis.

How is your life, you're the coach of the first actress the world?

For me is not changed significantly since train in a very similar way, ubadamo with similar problems. Life is running completely normal, but I am very happy to train such actresses as Dinara Safina. If I ever break it, I will this very moment I remembered. Moreover, this is a good reference for me, as well to see how much progress Dinare under my leadership.

Krajan: Women of the coaches are looking for a lot more sense

The Story of Dinara Safina and Zeljko Krajan has all the elements of classical Ljubića

PORTOROŽ - When you listened to them talk about one another, you might think it is a married couple. He is her digao from the ashes, came together to the top and now neither one of them can not imagine that they are not together. Their relationship based on mutual confidence which is important for Safina: "No man that I also could believe as I believe Željko," she says.

- Otherwise the train tennis player than players. With men it is a job - come, odradiš and almost a woman looking for a lot more connections, as soon as they come from and much greater consumption of time and nerves - to describe their professional relationship between 30-year Krajan.

Psychological problems

Varazdin says that it is a great feeling to be leading the first showgirl world and that the space for a lot of progress.

- I will be satisfied when Dinara get the maximum. There are still a lot to fix - says Krajan.

For protÚgÚs claims that the soldier and highlights the desire for victories, as a defect out, "head".

- It is not a born winner as the Williams sisters, who with 18 years won GS's, or created as a champion Sharapova, you are my whole life training to be. Dinara around was not a team of 20 people who worked on the psyche and therefore now has a problem - explains Krajan.

These problems are most in the largest mečevima.

- For example, before the Roland Garros finals they have created such pressure that it was impossible to reach it. Has lost his past three Grand Slam finals and I hope that they will not get to shooting.

Mistrustful tennis players

For now, he says, seen only in the work with Dinara, but does not hide the men's tennis is seen as a challenge.

- I never saw on the WTA Tour. Women's tennis coach spends a lot more than men and it is certain that I would like to work with some players. The problem is that they have no confidence in the trainers with the women's Tour, so I probably had to go from a junior - says Zeljko Krajan.

Safina back in November again in Portoroz?

Zeljko optimistic before final

Željko Krajan is excited over the conditions for training in Portorož. In November, with Dinaro Safino want to return to practice, is also a great opportunity to come back next year.

30-year former player in Varazdin polfinalni after winning their varovanke of Alberto Italijanko Brianti collapse impressions of MMC. In 2002 he was in polfinalu Umaga, meanwhile, is on the 88th zavihtel place in the ATP ranking, then ga stem injury. In 2007, it is recommended Ivan Ljubičić Safini, which he still owes Dinare dinner. Successfully cooperate since September 2007, her coach, but he became in February 2008.

Dinara has come to the finals without a lost series. Are you satisfied with the game? What do you expect from the finals against Sara Errani?

Do četrtfinala I was pleased with polfinalnim fight but I'm not satisfied. This was not the level of the game, which I expected. She played very average. Of course, I expect to win in the Finals. If you will be able to play like, then the victory will not be escaped. Erranijeva it on the sand this year has already overcome the 6:1 and 6:0. Must focus on my game and the outcome will not be missed.

Safina repeatedly emphasizes that you are big dog, big boss. Do not listen to anybody else, no father, no mother, no brothers, only you. This is probably very important for success.

Absolutely. The player must believe in the coach. This is all relative. When we started to cooperate, it was quite on the ground. Had no self-esteem, decreased the WTA ranking. Not finding the way from the crisis, it is accepted all my recommendations. If it had not won all these tournaments, this mode of work would not be worthwhile. Probably would not work together. The results are all changed, when they could not, would not have anything to work.

Little surprise you with a statement that is not the "material" to number one in the world. Now it has managed to come first.

I did not think that they do not have the ability to number one. Far from it. Now the number one and still think that way. It is not yet reached its maximum. From the small was not the case for a future number one, as they were to Šarapova and Sister Mary Williams.

Her techniques have not changed much.

When we started working, it had 22 years of age. Then it is impossible to change a lot, that would be too much risk. Maybe you can fix any detail. The coach needs to adapt to players. Maybe I have a few different ideas about the game of tennis, and everything in it can not be performed.

What should be the first coach actress world? Probably should be a good psychologist.

I really must have a strong understanding and patience. Understanding the actress got. In the women's tennis is quite normal that the coach, father, brother, psychologist, and more in one person. The Williams sisters are different, whereas the incredible self-confidence, all the other actress in need of a confidential person. At the beginning I was difficult to understand, but now I vživel in this role.

Are you a mind, that journalists always vrtajo the issues that has never won a Grand Slam tournament, although number one in the world?

Certainly the mind. Since this is not possible to escape, as the number one. This can be confirmed by the victory in the grand slamu. This will not change, the pressure will always be present. All of its first victory in the Grand Slam. Without pressure, it is impossible to play at that level.

IP U.S. will defend well many of the points. At the tournaments will come?

On Tuesday we will fly to Los Angeles and then will play in the Cincinnatiju and Toronto. Each season will be decided on the U.S. tour on hard grounds. No sense the burden of maintenance items should continue to move forward in the game. At the Olympic Games is not winning, even in the U.S. Opnu was not the best, therefore, is still some room for improvement. My only objective is to extract 100 percent of it.

In Wimbledonu you do not all work out as planned. It is the Williams sisters may be competitive in New York?

By my hand, even exceeded plans. On the grass is not feeling well. She played in polfinalu, which is a good basis for the continuation of the season. Even in the U.S. Opnu during the four or five favoritinjami to win, as the number one in the world. Only in četrtfinalu will be seen, the player is really capable of final victory.

The great thing is to Portorož that came Safina. Is there a possibility to return next year?

There is a possibility, since in the second half of play once the tournament in that category. If it wins, you will probably like to return. There are very good conditions, we are well trained. You may already be back in November, after the end of the season could be performed in Portorož good practice, if allowed to weather.

Next week s on 20th tournament in Umag, where were you in 2002 polfinalu. How would you compare the tournament in Portoroz in Umag?

This is totally different tournament, since you can play women, but men in Umag. More attention is focused this year on the tournament since she came number one. The organization is good in Umag, this is perfect. Director of the tournament, the bother, we have all the coaches and actress excellent conditions for work. We have everything we need. Dinara would love won the tournament in order to oddolžila director of the tournament and all those who are trying it in the past two weeks. Umag has been my favorite tournament, there I felt the best. And here is a good feeling.

What is happening with the Croatian women's tennis? You had a lot of taletnov (Jelena Kostanić, Karolina Šprem and Mirjana Lučić). Iva Majoli won at Roland Garrosu 1997. Now you do not go well. For men, the picture is completely different, in the Davis Cup you exclude the U.S..

Croatian women's tennis does not track a lot. Dinara not play with the Croatian players, so they do not know well. Iva Majoli, and some were among the 30 best in the world, and is not in quite the unfortunate discuss this at this time. Men's tennis is quite something else. Classification in the Davis Cup semi, with the possibility of a new address is really worth the result. Croatia with so few people can win again in such an important competition. This is great recognition for Croatia.

Make of it what you will.

"Professional tennis coach offers tips on how to play better tennis" (http://www.tennisthoughts.com/2009/07/26/dinara-safina-wins-slovenia-open-2009/)

Safina requested coaching a few times in the match and Zeljko Krajan, her coach, was telling her a few interesting tactical choices. The Slovenian TV was broadcasting his coaching on TV so we could her what he was saying.

He wanted Safina to get out of the backhand cross court rallies with Errani and play soon to Errani forehand (by playing down the line) from which she would most likely get a shorter higher ball which Safina could take inside the court and hit on the rise.

He also told Dinara to hit fast if Errani comes to the net and avoid playing short angles and trying to outplay Errani with some touch passing shots.

This was the part I liked.

The part that I didn’t like was the criticizing part where Zeljko repeated a few times to Dinara about her previous missed attempts of touch passing shots which didn’t work.

Something like:«How many times you have to miss or lose points like to this to get it?«

Criticizing a woman during a tennis match is NOT a good idea. Once the emotions take over with women it’s very very hard for them to get back into ideal performance state.

But for a man coach it’s hard to realize that women respond differently to criticism than men. For men a critique can be a challenge. For women, a critique is a painful emotion and they barely hear what the actual instruction may be if it follows.

He also advised her to be even more aggressive and attack the ball earlier which is very dangerous to suggest to a girl in the match because girls in my experience take these instruction literally. Safina did exactly that and started forcing the game so much that she was missing every second ball.

One ball went in and it was a winner and the second one was a miss. Safina plays the ball hard enough already and she might take it a bit earlier but I definitely wouldn’t tell her to be even more aggressive and hit harder because I might imagine that she would hit harder 5% and she might interpret my words by hitting harder 20% – which is way too much.

Another comment that shows how far Dinara is still far from champion thinking and what she actually needs to focus on was :«I don’t want to lose this match.« She told this to Krajan during her coaching time.

Zeljko told her not to panic as her panic is causing her to lose and not her game which is true but it’s still so surprising to hear that even the #1 player in the world focuses on completely wrong things during the match which cause her to be even more anxious.

Winning or losing is not within the player’s control and any time a player focuses on something that she cannot control it will cause more nerves and lower her performance.

A player can only control the effort and which tactics she chooses to play.

So Dinara would have to focus on the playing patterns which bring her more success and give her best. That’s it. Everything else it out of her control.

Criticizing a woman during a tennis match is NOT a good idea. Once the emotions take over with women it’s very very hard for them to get back into ideal performance state.

i think that fucker has more patience for his job than the 90% of males... and i can't believe he doesn't take booze or happy pills.
and maybe the bigger problem is Dinara herself, not the "too harsh critizing". but Z still just a tennis guy, he is not exorcist and has no superpowers and can't help on some things... sport-psychologist or whoever maybe could.

Another comment that shows how far Dinara is still far from champion thinking and what she actually needs to focus on was :źI don’t want to lose this match.ź She told this to Krajan during her coaching time.

did she really said that? no wonder she is a joke. *puke* it's a damn tennis match, she needs to focus the game, no need this gibberish. will she ever learn something, or just start crying every fuckin time? no wonder she hit thousand DF every time, no matter of training... why is she so stupid? she thrilling herself totally unnecessarily every fuckin time. WHY?
this is unpossible... she paniced against Sara effin' Errani... this is the end. 700,000% end.

Srebotnikova seeking more than just a coach

Dinara Safine coach Zeljko in an interview on our site said that while Dinarin coach, father, mother, brother, a psychologist from the coach ... What do you expect?

Very important is the character of the trainer and if the catch, are you in a very good way, as together they spend a lot of time. The coach is basically your psychologist, brother, father, whatever ... In the end should be all that can help players to the best results. Similarly, in the game dvojic. Choose the actress to the immediately catch. All the above mentioned things itself expect from new coach. On the role of the trainer look like Dinara. On the other hand, the actress, who have a completely different view and have a coach just to carry out training on the field. After the exercise is idet and do not see the next day. Everything is very dependent on each individual.

This was posted about a week ago, but the google translated version wasn't that coherent.

Zeljko Krajan, a Croatian coach who has had crucial importance in Dinara Safinaĺs surge to the top, says that working in womenĺs tennis is much more difficult then in menĺs.

ôWith men that is only a job. You come, you work and you go. With women it is much more emotional and with it come much more spending of nerves and timeö, explains Krajan who started to work with the Russian in the first half of last year when she was a mediocre player. He admits that his work is not done yet. The biggest problem remains in her head.

ôI will be satisfied when I make the most of Safinaĺs talent. There is a lot to be improved. She is not born a winner like the Williams sisters, who won Grand Slams when 18. She is not made a winner like Sharapova who was trained all her life to be a champion. Dinara was not surrounded with 20 people who worked on her mental strength and there are the roots of her problems now.ö

ôThe bill to be paid is very high. Safina was very easily beaten in all three Grand Slam final so far. I hope that those defeats will not break her. In last Roland Garros final she made so high pressure on herself, that it was impossible to reach to her.ö

Krajan is 100 percent in Safina corner, but he doesnĺt exclude a move to another tennis world. ôI would like to work in menĺs tennis. I never saw myself in WTA Tour before my assignment with Dinara. Problem is that boys donĺt trust coaches from woman tennis, so I would probably have to start with juniors.ö

Old interview with Z from Portoroz, but I'm bored so I've tried to make the translation a bit more understandable.

Because you were once a player, are you able to assess how much easier it is to succeed in women's tennis than men's?

I would not say that it is easier. I think, that it is difficult to compare because they are two sports. When I was a player, I also thought that it was much harder to break through than for women, but you should look at this, it is a completely different body, women tolerate much less and for them it is as demanding as it is for men. As for the competition, it is always exciting and the circuit is a lot wider today.

You said, that it was two completely different worlds. What do you see the biggest differences in?

For men, the tennis is faster, better, more aggressive, again because of the physical abilities. For women, however, sometimes it all comes together more interestingly because it involves a lot more emotions, more arguments.

What must a coach have in women's tennis have?

A lot of patience and understanding. This is the most important thing, more so than tennis knowledge. Coach must also be psychologist, brother, father, all. With men it is less work, especially with explaining why... The player demands from the coach much more nerves, life, time.

How does the coach of Dinara Safina feel in the stands, knowing that she can make produce more than 10 double faults and can win 6:0, 6:0 but also lose 0:6, 1:6?

I felt much easier when I found that she was unpredictable. Some things you simply have to accept. Of the twenty things that needed to be changed from the beginning of our co-operation, so far we have cracked 16/17 things - 3 or 4 she perhaps never will. She is not perfect, nobody is. She will have problems to the end of her career, there will always be things on which we have to work. Some new problem appears every day.

This time it's probably her service.

Yes it really is, but last year for example she served excellently. Her forehand for two months is okay but then for two months it is not. Maybe two or three tournaments a year she plays perfectly, all the others she struggles with everything possible. She has problems with the service now and forehand somewhat, in a few months it may be her backhand, and so on. This is how she operates.

She has larger reserves in the strokes or the "head"?

First, in the head. In tennis this is normal, but in Dinara this is extreme, I would say, that 90 per cent of everything starts in the head. On the tennis side, she has no limits, she can make everything, there is no stroke, move, that she is not able to do. If she were not super talented, she would not be number 1. The question is only, how much does her head allow her to play tennis and how much is fear breaking things down.

How is it to work in a family in which the mother is a coach, the brother a top-class player and the father the owner of a tennis center?

I have a good, decent, relationship with her parents. We don't meet a lot. The parents are here in Portorož, before that they were with us last year in Paris. They come sometimes, when we train in between two tournaments, and help in matters not related to tennis, in my work they do not mix. I do not have the feeling at all that the mother is a coach. This seems somewhat strange that, as with us in Croatia everything begins with their parents, everything depends upon them, with Dinara the managers have the main word. The relationship is therefore exactly like it should be. The coach and the manager are here and this is it, the parents did not come. Even the brother with his own experiences is afraid to interfere. In the choice of coach he wanted to suggest nothing to her, even though he has a wealth of experiences. He simply didn't want to interfere, so that he would not someday be blamed.

Numerous debates go on recently, whom is the real No. 1, Serena the winner of three Grand Slam tournaments or Dinara. How do you see this?

In fact, I laugh. Serena and Venus consciously pursue such pressure, their father trained them from when they were small, and this is very succesful. If Serena wished to be #1, then there needs to be a special scale for the Grand Slams, but there is not, there never has been and there will never be. If she thinks that she can play only four tournaments a year and will be the first player in the world, she is wrong and she has problems with mathematics. It's not only Grand Slams that they count, it is necessary to play all year, but Serena is incapable of this. Unfortunately, Dinara is left to get drawn in to this game of the Williams sisters.

Well, in the semifinal of Wimbledon, she lost 6:1, 6:0...

I don't care if Dinara loses by 0:6, 0:6 or 3:6, 3:6. Even if Venus played without a lot of life, she would not have won. The 1:6, 0:6 result is not nice to see, but on the other hand, it is insignificant after the second page, she didn't have any chances in this duel. Venus on this surface is a much better player than Dinara. And also Serena, which is why I am not clear how she could lose the final.

How do you see Dinara's unsuccessful attempt to win a Grand Slam. Is it all due to the burden?

It isn't the burden so much, but more that she requires a lot of time to mature. She must go through certain things often to get the experience, unlike Williams or Maria Šharapova. They are born winners. Dinara is a completely normal player, she isn't a programmed champion, she trains normally, she has her problems and perhaps this interferes with number 1. For victory in the Grand Slam she needs a lot more finals, although there is, on the other hand, the danger that the desire to win will be blown out if she fails several times.

Will you be very disappointed if she never wins a Grand Slam tournament?

No. Before we started to co-operate, she moved between 15th and 20th place in the world. For such a player to get to No. 1 is a huge success, likewise the final of Grand Slam tournaments and winning of first level tournaments. She was not "material" for No.1, that is why her success for me is exceptional.

Another translated interview from Portoroz

Dinara reached the final without losing a set. Are you satisfied with her play? What do you expect from the final against Sara Errani?

The quarterfinal I was satisfied with, the semifinal duel I was not satisfied with. This was not the level of play that I expected. She played very averagely. Of course, I expect her to win in the final. If she plays as she is able to, victory will not be able to escape her. On clay this year, she already defeated Errani 6:1, 6:0. She needs to focus on her own game and the result won't be lacking.

Safina repeatedly points out that you are the big authority, the big boss. She does not listen to anybody else, not her father, not her mother, not her brother, only you. This is probably very important for success.

Absolutely. The player must believe in the coach. This is all relative. When we started to cooperate, she was quite on the ground. She didn't have any self-confidence, she dropped in the WTA rankings. She didn't find a way out of this crisis, which is why she accepted all my recommendations. If she had not won all these tournaments, this mode of work would not be worthwhile. We probably would not work together. The results changed all, if they were not there nothing would work.

You surprised a little with the statement that she is not the "material" to be number one in the world. Now she has succeeded in coming first.

I did not think she had the ability to be number one. Far from it. Now she is number one and I still think she can make progress. She has not yet reached her maximum. From small they did not consider her a future number one, like they did with Maria Sharapova and the Williams sisters.

You didn't change her techniques much.

When we began working together, she was already 22 years. It is impossible to change much at that time, this would be too large a risk. We could maybe correct some details. The coach must adapt to the player. I maybe have different ideas about the game of tennis, but I cannot apply it all to her.

What must the coach of the #1 player in the world possess? Probably should be a good psychologist.

He must really have a lot of insight and patience. You must understand the player. In women's tennis, it is completely normal that the coach is the father, brother, psychologist and much more in one person. Only the Williams sisters are different, because they possess unbelievable self-confidence, all other players need one trusted person. At the beginning, it was difficult to understand but now I v×ivel* in this role.

Does it bother her that journalists bore with questions throughout that she has never won a Grand Slam tournament, even though she is number one in the world?

It bothers her certainly. It isn't possible to escape from this, because she is number one. This can be confirmed by winning a Grand Slam. This will not change, the pressure will always be present. All until her first victory in a Grand Slam. Without pressure, it is impossible to play at that level.

In the US, she will be defending many points. Which tournaments will she fit in?

On Tuesday we will fly to Los Angeles and then she will play in Cincinnati and Toronto. Each season will be decided on the U.S. tour on hard courts. It makes no sense to burden her with defending points, she must continue to make progress in the game. She didn't win the Olympics, also the US Open wasn't the best, there is still room for improvement. My only goal is to extract 100% from her.

In Wimbledon it didn't work out as planned. Can she be competitive with the Williams sisters in New York?

She exceeded plans, from my side. She doesn't feel good on grass. She played in the semifinal, which is a good base for the continuation of the season. Even in the US Open there are four or five favourites to win, as the number one in the world. It will be visible only in the quarterfinal which player is really capable of the final victory.

It is a great thing that Safina came to Portoroz. Is there a possibility that she returns next year?

There is a possibility, because in the second half of the year you must play a tournament in that category. If she wins, she will probably like to return. Conditions are very good here, we trained well. We may already return in November, after the end of the season to finish our training, if the weather allows it.

Next week is the 20th tournament in Umag, where you were in 2002 in the semifinal. How would you compare the tournaments in Portoroz and Umag?

These are totally different tournaments, because women play here, in Umag it's men. More attention is focused this year on the tournament since she came number one. The organization is good in Umag, here it is perfect. The director of the tournament strived hard so that the coaches and players have excellent conditions for work. We have everything we need. Dinara would love to win the tournament in order to replay the director of the tournament and all those who have tried hard in the past two weeks. Umag was my dearest tournament, I felt best there. I feel well here also.

What is happening with Croatian woman's tennis? You had a lot of talent (Jelena Kostanić, Karolina Őprem and Mirjana Lučić). Iva Majoli won at Roland Garros in 1997. You aren't doing well now. For men, the picture is completely different, in the Davis Cup you set aside the U.S.

I do not monitor Croatian woman's tennis much. Dinara doesn't play with Croatian players, that is why I do not know them well. Iva Majoli, and some were among the 30 best in the world, they aren't there at the moment and it is rather unfortunate to discuss this at this time. Men's tennis is quite something else. Classification in the Davis Cup semifinal, with the possibility of a new address is really worth the result. Croatia with so few people can win again in such an important competition. This is great recognition for Croatia.

(* If anyone knows what "v×ivel" is, please let me know. I could probably have a decent guess, but I'd like to know for sure :p)

Krajan: I was like in a trance

Zeljko krajan hero is the fifth day Umag tournament. Varazdin arrived yesterday to the biggest victory of his career against Ivan Ljubičić with 7:6 (2), 7:5 in a meeting full Turnaround. Krajan was the first victory of her career over Ljubičić, but also the first entry into the semifinals of an ATP tournament. Thus, the most successful week in his career (entry into the Quarterfinals and among the top 100 players over the world) has done - even more successful!

"I can not say that I was expecting a victory. I do not mind anything, not even light, which we usually do not match. I did not see anything other than the ground. I felt as if I'm in a trance. I think we played a great match. I Ljubicic he played great, only it is Mučio service " - Krajan happily told after meeting.

In fact, it seemed to us that a lot of utter quiet, but for example his girlfriend Jelena Cus in Vara×din, which is a very emotionally pro×ivljavala Äeljkov performance.

"I think I will pass and I always hope that Zeljko win, but this is really a great victory. And yet it is made in Croatia, and the audience was great. Yes, specifically prepared for the match, but he always a procedure, which is a secret - Jelena said delighted.
