This should be interesting. They've never met before. I wish Alizé could pull it through but I think Elena will win this one.

I am hoping for Elena to win but I have my doubts. After such a high summer (and overall great year) coming to a rather horrible end in the USO SF I feel she is due a letdown, and Cornet is a player who is certainly capable of taking advantage. However, Elena has been mighty impressive with her consistency this season so she may continue that in Tokyo. Every time I have expected her to lose early she hasen't.

Either way, it's a very tough match and I hope Elena will be up to the task. :)

I hope Cornet can do it, but I expect Dementieva in 2 tough sets, though I wouldn't be surprised if this match went the distance.

2008:
Melbourne 2R - l. to #9 Hantuchova 62 75
Charleston SF - l. to #9 Williams 75 63
Rome F - l. to #4 Jankovic 62 62
Beijing 3R - l. to #4 Williams 36 63 64
Tokyo 2R - l. to #4 Dementieva 60 63
---
Rome 3R - def. #5 Kuznetsova 62 64
Rome SF - def. #8 Chakvetadze 36 64 63
W/L: 2-5

I just don't know if I believe in Alize enough to beat, essentially, a hardcourt specialist on a hardcourt. She is a marvel on clay, but she has enough weaknesses on hardcourt right now that I think Dementieva will have this mostly on her racket.

If Alize's BH DTL is working, since there are going to be plenty of BH CC rallies tonight, I could see something happening maybe. Alize is smart, she'll need to open the court, go for her shots, and hope for them to go in and not to get too tired.

This match is promising to be a very physical battle from the baseline. Dementieva should win, but despite her consistency this year, you never really know where she's going to be. I hope it'll be available for DL sometime, I've been wanting these two to play.

good analysis ,and nicely illustrated. :)
I think Alize keep improving, slowly but surely. Her results against the top players are more and more close.
She showed at beijing that she can play good and challenge big hitters player and especially serena williams.
She still young and keep learning how to play against the best.
you're right when you say that she is better on clay, shows some weaknesses on hardcourt but the girl has real motivation and fighting spirit. She always searching for improvement. She looks like Nadal in a way.
Even if she doesnt beat dementieva who shows great form this year, lately at the us open, Im amazed how alize is underrated there, many thinking she will lose in straight. :tape:
But many doesnt know how the girl works hard but without making any noise like other girls. She loves that type of match against the best.
But we'll see how this first encounter between them will turn, what I'm sure is that it will be MUCH more tight as many think here:o

Allez Alize:cool:

The biggest win in carreer for Alize or routine win for Elena? I'd say Elena in 2 (6-2 6-3 or sth. simmilar), Alize is propobly not ready yet to winning over top players, like Elena... However, if Elena will play really bad, then I see her chance...And after 2 great runs at Olympics & USO, a bad performance of Elena is really possible...

its rare dementieva win a match with a bagel even against poor players so against a top20 and in the first round!
no sorry that's just
alize never give up even if she is down 0-5 in second set.
Thats really obvious you dont know the girl.

If I remember well, many there predicted dementieva to win easyly against jancovic at the us open and we all know the result so better not jinx her:p
