Three (three-set) losses in a row. 24-19 record for the season if we exclude Fed Cup. Pretty bad year for Anna, and she's still top 15. It's a great feat, really.

Great win Kaia. :) Her ballbashing was appealing in Paris, glad she got another good win after that.

Very close and nervous match. 2nd set was embarrassing for Kaia, she lost her serve 4 times, but great fightback in 3rd. End was thriller, Kaia wasted ( or Anna saved , who knows) 6 matchpoints , 7th was successful for Kanepi though. Seems like Kaia can fight in third again, lately she suffered horrible meltdowns in 3rd against Na Li on Olympics and against Mauresmo twice.

I never liked Anna's game at all but it's becoming a sad story for her fans.
But indeed despite playing pretty poorly this year, she still is in top 15. Not that bad. She has nothing to defend before YEC as well.

Congrats to Kaia. :yeah:

Kanepi is now 3-1 vs Chakvetadze. Considering Anna's current form this could hardly really be considered a surprise or an upset. It is obviously a match-up Kaia likes a lot more than Anna.

Oh Anna... I really wish she'd just take a long break... hard to understand what is going on with her just now, but it's not doing her any good to be out there and struggling week after week. I had hoped the break after her early USO loss would allow her some time to sort her brain and her game out, but it seems perhaps not. That said, I didn't watch the match, so perhaps she didn't play that badly... haha.

Anyway, well done to Kaia and her fans... hope she can do well, she's always a dangerous player when she gets her game into gear.

 Anna had a bad slump a couple of years but her best fans stuck with her and she came through it and reached new heights. Hopefully it's just a case of riding this one out and she'll get back to what she's capable of.

Anna's defending 475 points for the rest of the year. That includes 335 for the YEC which she'll definitely lose. If she were to lose all those points today it would still only drop her down to #19. Her year has been mediocre to poor but she's still picked up enough to keep her around Top 20.

very sad loss anna. the annoying thing is its your head thats losing all these matches, not your tennis. to lose 3 3-setters in a row only shows what mental state your in. the fact that you will finish the year top 20 is only testament to how good your actualy game is, because chak has been playing without any nerve or confidence for a year now. its sad to see her be undermimed by her mental inabilities rght now.

Poor Chaky is getting so much hate these days. I'm not really a fan, but why do people enjoy seeing her lose so much? I've felt bad for the girl ever since the home invasion happened. She hasn't been the same since.

I have no sympathy because its all part of the job, and it is a job she is certainly getting paid well for.

true about Vee&Ree  but that's nothing new :o

I just don't get why so many posters despise Chakvetadze so much. What did she do, other than slump (which is related to what happened to her and family) to get such a negative reaction from some posters?

Not the best results, but she's been consistent and solid enough (primarily due to being a tournament whore for much of the last two/three years) she can take advantage of fairly weak tournaments with a bye in the first round.

Since only Madrid out of that is coming off from now to the end of the year, I'd fathom she'd finish the year top 15, not even top 20. The other girls have been bad, but she's had enough good points that even though her results suck more than theirs, her highs are a bit better too.

What is Anna's schedule this fall? You or anyone know?

Not the I share any such sentiments but at least I can understand that many resent the fact that Anna was getting with relative ease through the first rounds of the number of tournaments she was playing this year due to her very high ranking while the quality was missing. At the same time a lot of girls in better form than Anna were toiling through the quallies and were facing strong opponents in the early rounds.

This rather than anything else is responsible for Anna not slipping dramatically in the rankings and not the supposed quality of her game -- which this year is simply missing -- as some of her supporters would like us to believe.

My opinion is that Anna earned herself the right for this luxurious situation with her performance last year. Such are the benefits of being highly ranked after all, and Anna was smart to take full advantage of them.

Chris also alluded to this in his own post.

shes 2-0 over aga this year, both were early in tournaments (1st and 3rd rounds), so shes had tough draws to, unless you think agas a nobody?

This is your usual sophistry. From one or two instances you want to generalize while totally ignoring anything that is inconvenient -- that's against the rules of valid reasoning. For me it's just plain dishonest. And you know very well that at least in the first case, fresh Chakvetadze was facing tired Radwańska who had to play 5 different matches within something like 3 days in two different countries.

Serenita

no you slagged off chak saying shes ranked high because shes had easy draws, i gave you an example of 2 tough draws against a player you think is the 'next best thing' and you made excuses, enough said realy.

Very unlikely. :) Disregarding the YEC, for the rest of the year Anna only has to defend 70 points from Luxembourg and 70 from Linz. As I said earlier in this thread, even if she lost all those points she'd be the equivalent of #19 in the rankings right now. I'm hoping she can at least pick up a few wins between now and the end of the year which would put her higher.
