View Full Version : Rank the top ______ players as the casual fan plus views them

As in, Venus is my favorite player, and defending two-teim defending Wimbledon champ, but I'm not so stupid/blind/deluded as to claim that tennis fans, when you include casual fans, think she's #1.

Is this partially a popularity contest? Sure. That's what you get when you consider the opinion of casual fans. Agnieszka Radwanska is, objectively, one of the best players in the world. Elite? no. Right on the cusp? yes. Casual fans have no idea who she is. You have to factor that in to answer the question intelligently.

Rank the top two, top five, top eight, whatever. Take your pick.

NOTE: This includes hard-core fans like us. But there are way more casual fans. The kind who only tune in during the slams, and maybe Miami, and the YEC. Name recognition counts. Bear in mind that a lot of people wathced Dementieva win the Olympics. That said, have a party. In other words, discuss.

this is hard. I can only do it for my own country, and I am basing it on what was shown at Wimbledon. The only time Danish TV shows women tennis (when ES shows, which matches are to be shown is decided elsewhere)

Serena
Venus
Sharapova
Wozniacki (but only because she is Danish)
Jankovic (mainly because she has beaten the Danish girl)
Ivanovic (also, sadly, mainly because hse has beaten the Danish girl)

There is no doubt that to the casual fans Serena followed by Venus are the two best women's tennis players in the world. This is also supported by actual polling data as they usually top most polls. I also know this by the people I associate with as they haven't the slightest clue about tennis but will tune in at a slam final if one of the Sisters are playing. Much to my surprise a friend of mine from overseas called me several times during the USO final to talk about the match.

Maria, Serena, and Venus have the highest profiles and are known by most casual fans. Then I would say Ana leads the group behind them but her profile has increased a lot over the last year

Over here in London/England I'd say the best known players to the casual fans are still the Williams sisters and Sharapova (most casual fans only watch Wimbledon). I think Mauresmo is still pretty well known. I don't think too many people knew that Davenport is still playing, she was popular a few years ago, but not necessarily famous. I think she was one of those names that are assiociated with tennis (along with Capriati/Seles/Graf etc.)

I think if Ivanovic and Jankovic were to win Wimbledon they would be HUGE over here, they have the looks and personality. It's just both have had most of their success abroad, and they both are fairly new to the top.

At the top of the list you have the William sisters. That name is like a global brand. Anyone who has the most limited knowledge of tennis has probably heard of them, and that they're good/dominant players. So they are 1 and 2.

Hova is probably the next most well known. How can she not be, having been paraded all over the place as the Jesus of Tennis and the IT girl. Plus beating a WS in a slam final to win her first slam... plus loosing fitting the media image of cuteness (even though when you look closer that illusion falls apart).

Just below her, I'd place the two serbs. The serbians have been the main story in tennis for a couple of years now I think. I think the BBC and some American channels have done the whole, sob story montage... "the were on the front line of the second world war and have now become tennis champions...", as well as their success of course.

The rest of the list depends of where you are in the world and how much tennis contact you have.

So:

1. Serena
2. Venus
3. Hova
4. Ivanovic
5. Jankovic

I made that list from a casual fans view, and I think hardcore fans would make a similar list... based on achievements anyway.

2.) Sharapova/Serena
3.) Venus

Well, I would think that if a person is tuning in to watch the YEC and especially Miami, they would have a pretty good understanding of who the top players are. As for just a casual sports fan in general, but not one who really watches tennis, this is the impression I get from people that I know:

1.) Serena: The absolute GOAT and is pretty much unbeatable when she tries
2.) Maria: That hot white chick who is also actually good at tennis (unlike Kournikova)
3.) Venus: The "other" Williams sister who is also really good (they might get the two confused)
**They might have heard of Henin, but probably don't know much about her, or even that she's retired**

As for a more knowledgable fan who tunes in to watch the slams:

1.) Serena
2.) Venus
3.) Maria
They probably know these three pretty well and understand their accomplishments/abilities. Also:
4.) Mauresmo: That good French chick that looks like a man. Might think that her game is more power than finesse and might not be aware of her current slump/decline
5.) Kuznetsova: The fit one with the huge legs and who likes to slide alot
6.) Ivanovic: The "other" hot girl who is giving Sharapova competition
7.) Davenport: The old lady who was good in the past and has now come back after having a baby
8.) Jankovic: The one who is always hurt and plays long matches

And I'll add these recently retired:
Henin: The really good one who could beat the Williamses but retired early
Hingis: The one who got busted using coke. Also, the one who would get bitchy with the Williams sisters.

I can talk about what I think happens in my country. Here the Williams sisters are by far the better known to regular people. Sharapova is also well known, but not as much. Ana is beginning to get some exposure. Henin was also well known, she had her own particular news section in the most important prime time news show when she announced her retirement.

Well, here in Danmark, people obviously know Venus & Serena (often they can't tell them apart, though), Maria (the sexy girl who won Wimbledon as a 17 year old), Ivanovic (the new pretty girl), and some know Jankovic (because she has beaten Caro a couple of times ). They also think that Caroline belongs to the very elite, and they think that everyone who beats Caro is the best player of the world. Pretty biased way of thinking, yeah. :p

Well Tati is going out with one of the best players, in one of the 3 best teams in the country's national sport. Not to mention the fact that her red knickers made like every national paper... OK, I just had some fun with this thread. I walked around my office and asked a small sample of 20 people who I've heard talk about sports or tennis at some point during my career here.

Here is the ranking (I'm in the US)...

1) Venus Williams - everyone mentioned her
2) Serena Williams - everyone mentioned her
3) Roger Federer - 14 people mentioned federer
4) Andy Roddick - 6 people mentioned him
5) Nadal - 4 people mentioned him
6) Sharapova - 2 people mentioned her
7) Blake - 1 person mentioned him

Mauresmo: That good French chick that looks like a man. Might think that her game is more power than finesse and might not be aware of her current slump/decline

That's exactly the impression I get not from casual fans but from people who know next to nothing about tennis. They look at her and think she's the strongest, most powerful player other than the Williams sisters, and that she hits tremendously hard. I have lost track at how many times I have explained to other people that she doesn't really play a baseline power game. And yes, they still think she's one of the world's very best players.

Other than that, congratulations to Volcana on his 721847329543257405th thread about the single topic he addresses on this board: how the Williams sisters are the biggest stars in the game.

Casual tennis fans are a myth. You have hardcore fans and general sport fans. The rest of the public monitors tennis much like Floridians track hurricanes. (err, meaning no one remembers the tropical storm that fizzles)

General US sports fans have been drilled on Williamonics. Outside of them, only Swami like (general) sports intelligentsias could provide a current woman's name other than Maria Sharapova.

The rest of the world might be more aware. I suspect that beyond the peculiarity of national preference, the dynamic is similar to the USA.

Venus Williams
Anna Kournikova
Maria Sharapova
Ana Ivanovic
Elena Dementieva
Zheng Jie (Wimbledon Semifinal from a country of over a billion)
Sania Mirza
Jelena Jankovic

And I think that's it. Of those nine, I think the fewest overall people could recognize Jankovic's name. Dementieva gets a huge boost by winning the Olympics; before then, she had a core contingent of die-hard fans, and not a lot else. I still think the Williams are the gold standard as far as recognition goes. Pretty much everyone in the United States knows them, and anyone who casually follows tennis as well. Sharapova might barely edge them in terms of people who literally don't follow tennis at all, as she's made a great deal of waves in some parts of the world literally without playing tennis. But Venus and Serena are still institutions. Kournikova too. Ivanovic is rising, but the rate of rising is slowing down. Jie and Mirza are there only because they've got huge ethnic contingents rooting for them, and they've done enough to stoke the flames.
