If you look at vids of her in 1996-1998 its one way
1999-2003 it another 2004 some weird way.

I mean over the years she has changed her motion. Maybe Im the only one that has noticed. Her serve is beutiful but complicated. It has to much movement. When did she get her current service motion?

At one point, BJK gave her some tips on improving it to get a higher 1st serve % for Fed Cup, but it didn't work out like either hoped. That's all I know.

maybe after the stomach injury just to prevent ... I really don't know, but she has that weird movement with her wrist and her arm when she is serving ... :p

I notice that her entire game in 2000 was totally different than it is now. Her backhand was more like Serena's - she used to start much higher. Now, she starts at her hip. The serve looks similar, but definitely different than her 1999 days.

but less effective than what it used to be. I remember when that serve used to be a weapon, not a liabiity like it has become now outside of grass :(

You really think her serve is a liability?

I don't know. I think it's more mental than mechanical. I think her serve can be just as much a weapon anywhere else as it is on grass. I just think her mentality is different on the grass. Look at Wimbledon this year, when was the last time you saw Venus beat a top ten player on caliber w/Serena with her 2nd serve? Venus' 2nd serve of all things saved her behind at Wimbledon. Could she do that on hardcourt or clay, I don't know.

When was this?

2003, the first week of Fed Cup, I think. There was a weird happening the whole Fed Cup season back then; Capriati booted off the squad; Venus' serve getting fooled around with.

I think that was part of the reason BJK got bumped from coaching the team.

I thought her serve was a huge weapon at the US Open.

Her backhand and is still a huge weapon. But I will never forget that Backhand DTL against seles 2002 AO qtrs. so much power and accuracy.

Her serve troubles can be traced back to 2003 although even before then, it was very "iffy".

With the abdominal injury, it seemed like she almost became scared or hesitant on the serve. It was no longer consistently in the 120s like it is now.

Her motion has never been great..and her mechanics never very sound, but I'm happy that now, it's at least as powerful as it was in her heyday.

She had slight modifications to it in 2000, and then obviously had to change it due to the abdominal injury. Has lessa elevation off the ground these days, but still has that quick wrist-snap and reach on the ball.

Venus's serve has always been slightly clunky at times, the fluidity is never in the league of say Serena and Davenport, but i'm glad nowadays that she's varying her serve so much more. back in the day, she just used to have such predictable serving patterns.

It'll never be perfect, but it'll always be spectacular:drool:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaeJyLliyh8 ( Is similar to her current motion)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5noWN4z09I ( Is her Serena like motion)

Also when she wanted to add topspin she would have a davenport flair on her backhand with the risk movement etc. look
