View Full Version : When Myth becomes Reality: Qualifier MICE VS. ELEPHANT Ana

Nothing, i mean realy nothing from Ana's past not announce this bizzare x-files story, and also maybe in some other sports we have some similar strange cases... but never in tennis history.

Like i already notice, nothing in Ana early career have with this, actualy in that period seems that she will be one of WTA most brutal executioners against weak opponents - she turned PRO in August of 2003 and for example in next two Years (till August 2005) she played 100+ singles matches and only once lose against player which is worse ranked than she is (#36 Dinara Safina beat her in Berlin/05). She improve every season so after big improvments in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 she is finaly ready for last step to become elite WTA player with newest 2007 improvment, and that breakthrough realy happen last season which she played and finiched like TOP5 and big improvment still continue this season when she finaly reach #1 and first slam title. But subject of this thread is not to show her results and achivments BEFORE and SINCE 2007 - this is only about Ana Ivanovic h2h stats in WTA tournaments against players which reach Main Draw like Qualifiers when Ana is still upcoming youngstar and especialy after, when she becomes real WTA star (since 2007).

Before 2007 Ana Ivanovic NEVER LOSE MATCH AGAINST QUALIFIER which is not so big surprise b/c mostly of that time she played like officialy TOP20 and several years in the row to be unbeaten against qualifiers is actualy not such big achivment, but its important for this story to see what happen after with Ana.

ANA IVANOVIC vs QUALIFIERS (before 2007):
Won 7-5 6-7 7-6 vs (#29)GOLOVIN (ZURICH-2004)
Won 6-2 6-1 vs (#146)NEMECKOVA (CANBERRA-2005)
Won 5-7 6-3 6-4 vs (#126)DOMINIKOVIC (CANBERRA-2005)
Won 6-3 7-5 vs (#104)GRANVILLE (MIAMI-2005)
Won 6-2 7-6 vs (#66)GARBIN (TORONTO-2005)
Won 6-3 6-1 vs (#43)SREBOTNIK (ZURICH-2005)
Won 6-3 5-7 6-3 vs (#95)A.BONDARENKO (MIAMI-2006)
Won 6-3 6-2 vs (#55)FRAZIER (SAN DIEGO-2006)
Won 6-2 6-2 vs (#66)RADWANSKA (LINZ-2006)
Won 6-3 6-7 6-3 vs (#244)KERBER (HASSELT-2006)

So when player with such cruel stats vs qualifiers make neht step and after breakthrough start to torture even TOP10 players all the way, people logicaly expect that she will probably never drop even set against Qualifiers, but look whats happen:
http://www.sciencesurvivalblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/elephant_mouse.jpg

ANA IVANOVIC vs QUALIFIERS (since 2007):
Won 7-6 6-1 vs (#85)VINCI (GOLD COAST-2007)
Lose 7-5 6-4 vs (#84)SHVEDOVA (MIAMI-2007)
Won 6-2 6-0 vs (#122)OLARU (FRENCH OPEN-2007)
Won 6-4 6-2 vs (#91)HARKLEROAD (LOS ANGELES-2007)
Lose 6-3 6-1 vs (#169)YAN (TORONTO-2007)
Lose 6-2 1-6 6-3 vs (#46)K.BONDARENKO (STUTTGART-2007)
Lose 6-4 5-7 6-2 vs (#64)PIRONKOVA (ROME-2008)
Lose 6-3 4-6 6-4 vs (#188)COIN (US OPEN-2008)

She won just 3 of her 8 matches against qualifiers since 2007 and when she become finaly worlds TOP5 player during 2nd half of 2007 her stats becomes even worse so she is in 13 months losing strike (0-4 since August 2007) vs Qualifiers!!!

Same this Twilght Zone trends we will notice when we compare Ana Ivanovic BEFORE and SINCE 2007 h2h stats against players which is out of TOP100 and compare them with for example her h2h records against others elite WTA TOP10 Players. Before 2007 Ana never lose Main Draw match at some WTA tournament against some player out of TOP100 (and she played more than 20 MD matches against non-TOP100 before 2007), but since 2007 she already lose 3 matches against non-TOP100 opponents and also couple others very bad loses in same period like against #84 and #94 ranked player.

WTA Main Draws vs. TOP10 vs. non-TOP100 vs. Qualifiers
BEFORE 2007 5-14 (26.3%) 21-0 (100%) 10-0 (100%)
SINCE 2007 19-9 (67.9%) 7-3 (70.0%) 3-5 (37.5%)

Any comment? (but please dont even try to find some logical explanation about this)

EDIT:
Thanks to pointless bump of this thread during September of 2010 I'm in position to update this thread:
WON 6-1 6-4 vs (#57)KVITOVA (ZURICH-2008)
WON 6-7 7-5 6-1 vs (#82)VINCI (BRISBANE-2009)
WON 6-3 6-2 vs (#169)BRIANTI (AO-2009)
WON 6-2 7-6 vs (#104)PIN (DUBAI-2009)
WON 6-4 6-3 vs (#95)YAKIMOVA (INDIAN WELLS-2009)
WON 6-0 6-3 vs (#104)KORYTTSEVA (MIAMI-2009)
WON 2-6 6-1 6-1 vs (#64)OUDIN (CINCINNATI-2009)
WON 2-6 6-3 6-2 vs (#47)RYBARIKOVA (TORONTO-2009)
LOSE 3-6 7-5 6-3 vs (#46)SAFAROVA (TORONTO-2009)
WON 6-2 6-3 vs (#107)PERRY (AO-2010)
WON 6-4 6-3 (#106)PARMENTIER (MIAMI-2010)
WON 6-1 6-3 (#114)AMANMURADOVA (CINCINNATI-2010)

This is really very interesting phenom/paradox about Ana Ivanovic against qualifirs. Between March/2007 and August/2008 she lose 5 out of 7 matches against qualifiers :eek::eek: despite that is by far best period of her career so far when she reach WTA#1, 3GS finals (with one GS title), several others big titles and 16-7 W/L vs TOP10 opponents! Before that Mar07-Aug08 period Ana is WTA out of TOP10 upcoming youngster and has perfect 11-0 W/L record vs qualifiers, and after hers golden Mar07-Aug08 period, when she become player in-slump, hers W/L against Q-opponents is almost perfect 11-1! So Ana has at her peak 2-5 W/L vs qualifiers and 22-1 in rest of her career. If she comeback again in future into TOP10/TOP5 it will be very interesting to see will she starts again to extremely underperform in matches where facing qualifiers - will her mind be already "in next round", or she will be brutal and cruel against qualifiers like in rest of her career???

For me is actualy here more interesting question how on earth Ana managed to beat that #97 ranked mice player at slam in three  ... and answer is - she save 2MP's in 2nd set before wins 10-8 in 3rd :tape:

Ana, will be fine. But it is odd that as she gets better and better she has more and more big upsets. Next year she will probably win two Slams and in the other two lose to players ranked outside the top 200 in the 1st round.

another weird thing is that she won the 2nd set in the last 3 matches, which was probably a sign that she was turning the matches to her side, but she eventually lost them.

Thanks to Nadia Petrova (which just now beat Q-Rezai) Ana's Tokyo draw is Qualifiers-Free :woohoo:

:secret: Kanepi is a qualifierThis Ana problem which she have against Qualifiers since 2007 is unique case for elite players... so it's hard to belive that for example Dinara Safina (Kanepi is in her quarter) will choke that match. I check now, Dinara vs qualifiers since 2007 h2h is 12-2 (much better than Ivanovic 3-5). So Ana draw is realy now "qualifier-free" and she must use that golden opportunity

In Zurich Quarterfinal Ana will playing tommorow against CZE talented Petra Kvitova which is only qualifier which is still in main draw.

ANA IVANOVIC vs QUALIFIERS (since AUGUST 2007):
Lose 6-3 6-1 vs (#169)YAN (TORONTO-2007)
Lose 6-2 1-6 6-3 vs (#46)K.BONDARENKO (STUTTGART-2007)
Lose 6-4 5-7 6-2 vs (#64)PIRONKOVA (ROME-2008)
Lose 6-3 4-6 6-4 vs (#188)COIN (US OPEN-2008)

Why is Ana so nice and kind-hearted when playing against low-ranked players from qualies and why Qualifiers is so evil and without respect for such great champion and person which Ana is???

Will this 15 months long Ana's weirdest nightmare ended tommorow (against Kvitova)... what you thinking guys?

But four of the losses were to Safina (retirement), Sharapova (GOAT), Radwanska (now top ten), and Srebotnik. Schwartz (at AO, worst tournament, always struggles against Austrians, wasted set lead) and Arvidsson (taken #1 Jankovic, eventual GOAT, to three sets both times played this year) were the only two flukes. Certainly not Coin, Shvedova, and Zi.

Not too shabby IMO. :)

Unfortunatly the only reason that is is because brianti is playing right into ana´s forehand and her strong points. Brianti has no court awareness whatsoever and with that no good court coverage as well. She shouldn´t be near grandslamlevel at all. And before i looked up her ranking i thought that woman could no way be top 100. And thank god she isn´t, she´s no where near wta level and should stick to itf tournaments.

Can´t believe she beat debrito and king though. What the hell happened there. Or is she just absolutely sucking in this match?

Anyway, this is match was boring as hell. Ana has way more improvement to do if she wants to go past the 4th round. Credit to her effort in this match though.
