No news on any teams at the moment bar the Australian team - Hewitt and Dellacqua :). Oh and Safin and Safina have committed for Russia (I'm pretty sure)

But it would be awesome to see a British team, I like watching Murray play and they could be in with a shot if Anne kept her form of the past 6 months up :)

What's wrong with inviting Gilles Simon and Alize Cornet??? They have both certainly earned their invitations this year! Both are Top 20. Both are young and new faces.

Novak Djokovic was released from his commitment contract to the HC because both Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic were committed elsewhere. So he wanted to play, at least.

The HC has been forever attempting to bring back Roger Federer, especially since the tournament is turning 21! They are still trying to convince Patty Schnyder to play.

I have been waiting for a Marat and Dinara combination ever since she burst onto the scene. I'm glad they waited until Dinara matured as a player instead of rushing her in for the sensation factor.

Japan could be interesting with Ai Sugiyama and Kei Nishikori. Without Sugiyama, they will be invited to play the Asian Hopman Cup instead. Not that she's a huge international star or anything, just that Ayumi Morita (or whoever they choose) won't be enough to justify a main draw inclusion.

Andy Murray will most likely commit to Doha seeing as how he is the defending champion there. So the chances of Great Britain participating are slim.

The American team could be very strong this year. The HC will no doubt try to convince James Blake to return. If Serena plays too, then watch out. Or maybe Venus will play with Mardy Fish instead this year. How cool would it be to have Bethanie Mattek? haha

I can't see India taking part without Sania Mirza, and right now, she's too risky of an investment with her injury.

If the Czechs come back, it won't be with Lucie Safarova. She has been in terrible form this year, especially with injuries. Having said that, Nicole Vaidisova hasn't performed that much better either, but she is at least Top 30. Berdych probably won't play without Safarova, so it looks like Radek Stepanek is the next option.

Perhaps Spain are due for a return appearance? Anabel Medina Garrigues and Tommy Robredo again? Or maybe David Ferrer? A bit of a long shot would be Rafa.

Argentina are the best South American nation, and Juan Martin Del Potro has been playing exceptionally well in 2008, so he might be a possibility. The best Argentine female has been Gisela Dulko so she's in the mix as well.

Sweden? Belgium? Canada? Romania? Italy? Austria? I can't think of too many other possible countries that have both a top male and top female players. It's a shame that countries like China, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Denmark and Hungary don't have any top 100-ranked male players. It would be awesome to watch players like Li Na, Zheng Jie, Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Alona Bondarenko, Caroline Wozniacki or Agnes Szavay compete.

Then there's the Asian HC! I expect the top 6 combinations from China, Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Japan, India, Korea or Philippines to be somewhere in there.

Dulko is boring and has played too many Hopman Cups, and you really think Australians are going to watch Jozami or Salerni?

I'd pay to watch paint dry first

And I hope India doesn't play again, Mirza is just as boring as Dulko and her partner is, well, out of his league.

I actually think a Chinese Taipei team would be good, the crowd seems to like them (after all, Asians are cute  ) ... and they seem to play well and really get into it. Lu from Chinese Taipei with top doubles player Chan would be a good combo, although a bit lacking in power.

Dulko has indeed played too many hopman cups for my liking, she is a good player... but the Argentinian teams would not interest me too much, so I agree with you guys..time for Dulko to move on... but hey, as long as they keep taking her. It was like Asa Carlsson back in the day, they took her everyear, she lost every year and all her matches were kind of boring.. but it was just somebody to fill the gap next to the top swedish male player at the time.

I personally am up for a Tanasugarn/Udomchoke combo... Perth went crazy for Tammy the year they made the finals, they loved Paradorn also.

GERMANY is the fourth country confirmed for January's Hopman Cup in Perth, with former world No.4 Nicolas Kiefer set to partner rising star Sabine Lisicki.

Kiefer, currently ranked 25 in the world, recently knocked over top-10 players James Blake and Nikolay Davydenko at the Canadian Masters Series.

He also beat Frenchman Gilles Simon and Mardy Fish en route to the final, which he lost to world No.1 Rafael Nadal.

Lisicki, 19, has surged up the rankings to 64 this year and showed her potential at the Australian Open, where she defeated then world No.16 Dinara Safina, who has since climbed to third in the rankings.

Germany joins France (Alize Cornet and Simon), Australia (Casey Dellacqua and Lleyton Hewitt) and Russia (Safina and Marat Safin) in the eight nation field.

The tournament takes place from January 3-9.

I have a strong feeling that Dulko will be back, simply because inviting Del Potro to play for Argentina will be too hard for McNamee to resist. Gisela is the only Argentinean woman to have a ranking high enough to justify being entered into an invitational tournament.

I don't really want to see Taiwan playing again, although they did do a good job last year. That's just my personal preference, I didn't really enjoy watching either player.

I really feel that Japan will be invited without having to play Asian HC. Nishikori gained some public interest at the USO and if McNamee can secure Sugiyama or even Morita, then that's a pretty decent team, especially if it's Ai.

I don't want to see Czech Republic competing again, at least not with Berdych/Safarova. They've come 2 years in a row and they haven't really impressed too much.

India have had their run too. Mirza is a star but not right now, and it's silly to invite them if they don't have a decent enough male player for singles. They can play Asian HC.

If the HC got Federer to play, the organisers and presenters would go insane. Schnyder/Federer would be an alright team. Or even a young Swiss girl with Federer. It wouldn't really matter, if McNamee somehow got Roger to agree to play, he'd grab a Swiss tourist visiting Perth to play if he had to.

I wouldn't mind seeing Chakvetadze play, or maybe even Pavlyuchenkova (Why not? She's got a fairly high ranking for her age and is finishing the season in fine form.). Petrova did win in 2007 with Tursunov, but Petrova/Andreev? Please, no. :scared: That team just would not work. Now that I've mentioned it, I'm starting to really like the idea of a Pavlyuchenkova/Andreev team. :hearts:

Lisicki :D:D:D Kiefer :vomit: Hsieh is okay, and so is Lu, I'm not a fan or follower of either though. Serena is always fun to watch, but Blake is  Casey is a sweetheart, but I'm not a massive Lleyton fan. Marat is a favourite, but Dinara is not.

So I don't really have an outright team that I can support. I think I'll be behind Australia in Group 1 and Russia in Group 2. I'll probably end up cheering on specific players in matches rather than a team. For example Germany vs USA, Lisicki for WS, Blake for MS, and either for MD.

Both Courts are in use for 2 ties, on the final two sessions. Both on Thu 8th of Jan. The Morning session is Australia & USA on Centre court and Germany & Slovak on court 1. The night session is Russia & France on Centre Court and Italy & Chinese Taipei. Basically if you by a SEATED ticket for either session you can switch between both. You will get a reserved ticket on Centre Court and it is first come on court 2. There is a C reserve ticket which basically gets you access only to the Dome. This can be a cheaper option, but you aren't reserved a ticket on centre court. You can still get into centre court however because of the seating you will probly end up in the back of B reserve. I would say get an A reserve ticket (closet 2 both courts) and switch between.

In all other sessions court 1 is used for practise only.

Hope that helps.

ABC shows the day sessions plus the night final. Foxtel will show the night sessions live (excluding final) and replay all other sessions. Foxtel do a fantastic job of it (same as the Australian open). Not that I have seen too much of there coverage over the last 6yrs because i have had season tickets since then, so i have always been there.

Thank you for answering.

So basically, I have a B reserve ticket. Does this mean I can go to Centre Court, sit in my seat, watch one match, and leave to go to Court 1, get a seat wherever I can (because there is no reserve seating), watch a match than come back to my seat on Center Court? Also, where is Court 1 exactly?

Thanks. :)

You will have a reserved seat in centre court so you can switch between as much as you want.

Court 1 is directly behind the a reserve stand. Basically A reserve stand is a temp. stand and b reserve is the permeant stand and the stand for court 1 is the permeant stand at the opposite of the dome (sorry if this makes no sense i am unsure how familar the dome you are)

But basically you cant possible get lost between the 2 courts and it is obvious which is which. You will also be able to get from 1 to the other in just a couple of min. So swapping wont be a problem at all!!!

Here is the email I received

ERTH. US Open winner and world number 2 Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup. She injured her hamstring in the year ending WTA Championships and has not been able to recover in time to prepare adequately for the Perth tournament. She still intends to play the Australian Open.

However, in a boost to the tournament, mercurial Russian star Marat Safin has shelved retirement plans and recommitted to the Hopman: “I’m pleased to confirm my participation in Hopman Cup. It will be special to play with my sister, and I hope we can challenge for the Trophy”.

Tournament Director Paul McNamee said, “Although we are disappointed about Serena not being able to make it, we are delighted Marat Safin will be here. What an outstanding combination he and his sister are”.

Two time Champion James Blake will now be partnered by Meghann Shaughnessy who last year played the first Hopman match for USA, where she defeated Sania Mirza of India. Meghann, winner of six singles and 15 doubles titles on the WTA Tour has had an injury plagued year but retains a special WTA singles ranking of 50.

USA will remain the top seeds for this year’s Hyundai Hopman Cup. Blake, a two time Hopman Champion has spent the last few years ensconced in the world’s top 10 with a career high ranking of 4. He finished the year as the world number 10. The Russian brother/sister combination of world number 3 Dinara Safina and dual Grand Slam Champion Marat Safin will fill the number 2 position and be seeded to meet the USA in the Final.

USA is the most successful nation in the 20-year history of the Hopman Cup having been victorious five times.

The French team of Gilles Simon and Alize Cornet (world ranking 16) could however be the form team after Simon’s sensational run at the ATP Masters in Shanghai where he reached the semi-finals and catapulted to a year end ranking of 7. They will open the tournament against Chinese Taipei who won the recent Asian Hopman Cup to take up the final spot in the field. France are the third seeds and Australia, with former world number 1 Lleyton Hewitt and Western Australia’s Casey Dellacqua, will retain the fourth position. There will be no change to the schedule.

The Hyundai Hopman Cup XXI Teams revised field and schedule is:

Real disappointment, but there is always 1. On a side note though it makes the tournament and that group balance out and become quite even. As you would have expect James & Serena to go through undefeated all the way. But with Meghann it is a major blow to USA team and there chances. It may become quite tight in that group. But in saying that, no1 can entertain you like rena.

Does anyone know hoe fit Meghann is??? Its been ages since I have heard of her playing??? She may really struggle with fittness playing both dbls and singles in a short period???

I agree it's very disappointing that Serena will miss it twice now and Venus also in the 2006-2007 HC.

I am thinking about starting a petition for Serena to come down to Perth and do promotional work, even if she's injured. She committed to a tournament and fair enough if she can't play but she made a huge blow for the HC organizers and ticket holders and she should still come down here and do promotional work and signings to gain the respect back.

You should be really careful when you use that word.

It's possible that USA team makes the same than Serbia's team last year when JJ lost all her singles matches and then Novak won his singles match as well as the doubles.

This could actually happen as Meghann's made a very good doubles career so far and James should win his singles matches as well. However, it will all depend on Meggers' health.

Let's see.

Do you think a professional tennis player would play an exhibition tournament if she's not fit enough? Would she take those risks? I honestly think she should've played some more matches before but apparently she's physically O.K. Otherwise she wouldn't have accepted, or even invited.

First of all: Did you have a difficult day? Because there's no need to get mad. ;)

What I meant is that obviously it depends on Meghann's health as she had a really tough year. However, she wouldn't have accepted playing Hopman Cup if she wasn't well enough. Probably the only questionable point is how she's going to feel on court as she's totally out of rythm. :)

And that is what I think too. Surely playing against Dellacqua, Lisicki and Cibulkova will be very hard for her. And if she's out of rhythm and out of match fitness, wouldn't that mean she could become injured again more easily? She should come back at lower tournaments against lower ranked players.

I'm sure Shaughnessy will play well but it's still a boring selection, McNamee just gets the most recognisable name possible not a talented youngster.

As for the Williams sisters, McNamee just signs up these players every year Williams' and Safin yet they don't turn up. All he cares about is getting the biggest name but it always bites him on the arse. He was hired to a football club here in Melbourne during this year and in his first few months in charge he tried to trade for the best player in the league even though the club is worst in the country and has no chance of being anything else for years so it wouldve been pointless, but I think he just loves himself and wants to impress too much.

I dont think that is very fair.

Of course he is going to try and get the best player available. If he went down the list and went, "this player may get injured" or "this player my not turn up", you will end up with a list of kids, who guess what..... may get injured too. If Paul didnt go an get the best he could ticket sales will slump, and either the tournament will star to disappear, or it will be lost to the east like everything else. Just think how many times the tournament has been almost lot to melbourne or sydney, yet he has managed to keep it in perth. if he "loved himself so much" he would have snapped up the opportunity to move it to the east coast where it certainly would have been able to pull in a much greater interest and much more sponsorship money. He has also managed to start the Asian Qualifying as away to expand the tournament. A huge risk and if it fails he will have to wear that.

On to the Melbourne situation. Melbourne's problem is people weren't turning up and people weren't interested in them. This meant the Media was lacking interest. By at least making Brown name come up people where interested in Melbourne for a while. If it happened people would have turned up to there games, and it could have possible helped save them financially. But because it is unlikely he shouldn't try???? We also need to remember that he lost his job at Melbourne because he was at wimbledon trying to sign players up to the hopman cup. That sounds extremely selfish. How dare he try and get players to play in Perth.

Try and remember who he is. He could be running this much larger and much more prestige than the hopman cup, yet every year he is.

Players get injured, he cant control that, no1 can. All he can do is get the best available to sell the tickets and create interest, so the sponsor keep coming back and tournament keeps on going.

I don't really understand what your problem is with what Paul is doing, can you please clarify this???

Reworking the Draw would have been to the tournaments detriment. If people had bought tickets in order to see a certain country, then to have that moved would be a little unfair for those people. Plus then you have broadcasters who have been informed of the schedule. Some broadcasts will only take the ties involing there own country, so they would have to rescedule. It isnt as simple as you might think

France take the tie 3-0 with a 64 76 win in the mix doubles. The entire tie was a real buch of missed opportunities for the Chinese Taipei pair. They had 5 set points in the second set tie breaker of that mixed doubles set, and many chances in both singles went begging. France (especially Cornet) are going to have to pick it up if they want a chance at the final. :D

I think Alize will pick up her game in singles as she adapts to the Australian conditions and overcomes her jetlag. However, she has two much stronger opponents to come in Flavia and Dinara. I think it is her doubles that needs more improvement. She needs to help Simon out more because in their next two matches the opposing female players are very strong and will help their partners to hold.

Couldn't agree more about the doubles comments. Both Flavia and Dinara know their way around a doubles court and (depending on which one turns up) Marat knows what too do and I can't comment on Simon Bolelli but I do see mixed doubles being the French pair's weakness.

Go to livesports and under tennis. Make sure you choose your time zone on the upper right corner otherwise the schedule won't work. Slovak Republic def. USA 3-0

Cibulkova def. Shaughnessy 6-2 6-2
Whoever saw this match must've noticed that Meghann is totally out of rythm. I'm sure she'll play way better against either Casey or Sabine as she just needs to play some matches, I mean she needs hours of play, that's all. However, Dominika played really well today. She's really fast and was very intelligent as she moved Shaughnessy all around the court. Well done girl, you beat a 29 y.o. woman who's making her comeback after destroying her own knee last year and played her last WTA tournament in May. :yeah:

Cibulkova/Hrbaty def. Shaughnessy/Blake 6-4 7-6(4)
Meghann and James started the first set really well. However, both of them made a lot of UEs during the whole match. I'm quite sure that the score would've been totally different if either Shaughnessy or Blake would've played a bit better.
