GL in this big event to JJ!!!! I really want to see her get a few more titles before the year is over. Hopefully she'll go on a tear and take a couple of these events before the YEC's. For some reason, I feel like indoors is not a great surface for JJ, but hopefully she'll do a bit better this year.

I find it rather interesting that #1 seed JJ got #3, #5 and #7, while #2 seed Ana got #4, #6, and #8. I guess we're back to the standard JJ draws  Although in this case I'm sure it doesn't make much difference either way (though Ana is lucky she didn't draw Elena).

The draw is tough, but balanced. And Safina is on the other side.
Is it a very fast indoor court? If so, JJ will have to bring her best aggressive game if she wants to win this.

Really? You think she'd rather have Dinara? At this point I'd take Elena over Dinara any day of the week. I'd also take Svetlana over Agnieszka, especially since Svetlana is going to be coming straight from a Fed Cup tie on a completely different surface. I knew you'd say that - we get all the papers at the office.
Besides, it's an excellent example of the stupidity of fidellos conclusion - the guy who writes tennis reports for ''Politika'' is a bigger JJ hater than half of the GM! He can stand JJ only when she loses to Ana, otherwise he bashes her ruthlesssly.

Yeah, it's really funny actually, because he's so transparent - he usually calls Ana - Ana and JJ - Jankovic, whatever Jj does is never good enough - ''she's not focussed enough on her tennis career'', ''if she continues like this she won't last long'', ''this was perhaps her best chance at a GS title, for who knows when she'll have that good a draw next time'', blahblahblah. Also, when Ana overcame JJ in the ranking, he always referred to her as ''our best tennis player'', and now they're both ''first seeds'' and ''our two best tennis players'' :rolls:

Here is my preview of today's match:

Jankovic, the top seed at the Pan Pacific Open, comes off a Grand Slam final in New York and will retake top spot in the rankings with a strong showing here in Tokyo. The Serb is fit but did voice concerns about jet-lag after arriving in Tokyo from Florida. "It's not easy to adjust," she said. "It's about 13 hours time difference. I'm waking up so early. But the most important thing is that I'm healthy and injury-free, knock on wood." Pennetta proved too solid in the rallies for an out-of-form Peer and also won a useful 64% of her service points. The Italian does however trail the head-to-head series 0-3 against Jankovic, and was beaten all three times on her favourite surface (clay), winning just 1 set in the process. The 26-year-old doesn't really possess the kind of power which is required to unsettle Jankovic, while the Serb herself, goes well against Pennetta types, as she gives away very few cheap points in the rallies and this group of players lack the power to penetrate here (e.g. Jankovic is 7-1 vs. Bammer, 2-0 Wozniacki, 2-0 Radwanska, 2-0 Cornet, 2-0 Sugiyama). Jankovic also has the fitness and consistency to play long points, which isn't really what Pennetta needs right now.

Hey Wes,

Always check the tournament forum to see if someone posted a link for the stream. I don't think any station other than some Japanese will show any matches before QF/SF stage.

This is where there was a stream for a Japanese TV that showed Petrova v Rezai today (according to some poster), but I don't think they're showing all matches (and it's not working at the moment):

Flavia played really well. JJ was just on fire. She missed so rarely, considering how aggressive she was. She put a huge amount of pressure on Flavia's serve after maybe Flavia's 3rd service game of the match. It was basically a continuation of her play from the USO final, but against an overmatched player. It was shocking.

Both. JJ played monstrously well the first set and then just got progressively worse/more bored looking, and Svetlana just got better and better. I can't really be that upset that JJ lost, because that was the Svetlana that knows how to play tennis that showed up last night. And good for her, you're right, she's had a dismal year.

Yeah, true, but it does sort of seem like JJ lets Sveta in a little bit more than she should. Just seemed like another example of JJ not putting her foot to the floor. But Sveta played well and it's not anything to cry too much about.

Well, I am a bit angry with JJ. She just can't fool around with top players. Sveta is not Sofia Arvidsson. She burnt herself so many times and it seems she hasn't learnt the lesson yet.
On the other hand, she might use a break, and it's great Sveta's out of her moroseness.

Actually, in all honesty, I think she's just not used to keeping up that kind of aggressive play against top players yet. I'm a little pissy at her, too, but it's an adjustment in her game and it's not going to be instantaneous. She did it against Serena fairly well, but somehow that's different, somehow playing the Williams is just different for her. Otherwise, I'm trying to tell myself to keep the faith. If she can play like that for one set (like she did last night), she will eventually be able to do it for two. If she maintains her commitment to changing her approach.

(Also, only one person who was "supposed" to win their quarter actually did, maybe it was just a wacky day. :))

(Also, yay Sveta.)

That does make sense. I guess one shouldn't expect her to change her frame of mind completely just because she broke her GS SF curse. The thing that annoyed me the most is the fact that she lost to Sveta in almost the same manner as she did in the beginning of the year.

Isn't it a tad more likely JJ would play Srebotnik or Hantuchova than Tammy? Either way, I think she'll have a smooth ride (relatively speaking) until the semis against Vera or Na.
I always feel like a really bad person being happy when Li Na is in Jelena's quarter/half and loses before she has a chance to take Jelena out. :o

Ooh - I make that lunchtime here - so I might even be nice and put in a Pick extension ('cos I have NOT had the time to even look at them yet... getting bored of this working for a living lark now!)

I initially thought they wouldn't because of the rain delay, but the men's match has just finished so there's just Daniela's match to get through now.

Coverage should continue until 11pm local time.

What?! JJ's not next on stadium court. I thought she was on after Verdasco, didn't know anything about rain delay.

Jie cutie-pie won. They're showing end of her match right now. :hearts:

Bruno, I did everything to get that work for me, but it just doesn't. :(

Alex's livestream is excellent, only no JJ - what kind of delay are you talking about? She's not next on the court? It would suit me fine, since watching TV in the office instead of translating something called ''Military technology: Advances in camouflage, concealment and deception are revolutionising an age-old art of warfare'' is very tempting, but I don't know if JJ is willing to financially support me when they kick me out.

Play started later than planned because it rained. The Verdasco match finished a short while ago, so it's the Tanasugarn vs. Hantuchova match next and then Jelena's.

Stadium
1. ATP: Querrey vs. Levine
2. ATP: Verdasco vs. Reynolds
3. Tanasugarn vs. Hantuchova
4. Jankovic vs. Wozniak (NB 19.00hrs)
5. Zvonareva vs. Schiavone

The person broadcasting this on justin.tv just said that the weather in Beijing is awful - cold and raining. Well, it's not raining at the venue but by Tammy's outfit I'd say it's pretty cold. :scared:
