View Full Version : Girl kills herself over atom-smashing Big Bang fears

Sep 12th, 2008, 09:13 AM
A teenage girl in India has reportedly killed herself out of fear the world was about to end because of the atom-smashing "Big Bang" experiment" conducted in Europe.

The 16-year old girl, from the state of Madhya Pradesh, died after drinking pesticide, The Daily Mail said.

Her father, identified on local television as Biharilal, said his daughter, Chayya, had killed herself after watching doomsday predictions about the Large Hadron Collider on Indian news programmes.

"In the past two days, Chayya had asked me and other relatives about the world coming to an end on September 10," Biharilal said.

"We tried to divert her attention and told her she should not worry about such things, but to no avail."

As part of their experiments, scientists have now successfully fired protons in both directions around a 27-kilometre underground ring on the Swiss-French border.

They hope to smash the components of atoms together in attempts to learn about their structure.

But fears have been raised the experiment could create a black hole that would suck the Earth away, although the scientists involved insist the experiment is safe.

Fears about the experiment had spread rapidly through the media in deeply religious India, The Daily Mail said.

Thousands of people had rushed to temples to pray and fast while others savoured their favourite foods in anticipation of the world's end, the paper said.

Just because you have the luxury of a good education etc , doesn't mean everyone else has it or can afford it.A lot of uneducated people believe what they see on TV.Plus, she was a teenager and might have been going through depression et al.All this leads to an unfortunate incident.

It's not a matter of being dumb. It's a matter of being in a panic over something you can't control. If you honestly think that something you can't control is going to kill you then you take the control back and do it yourself.

But yeah mentally ill people who kill themselves super funny.

A joke? They really did the test.....

When you have a deep enough panic disorder you're not getting talked out of it. If you kill yourself over an irrational fear like this you're not going to get smacked out of it by your parents or friends.

I know they did it, but stories how that could be the end of the World or whatever was a joke ...

If she was my daughter, I would lock her inthe room, and be with her until the experiment is over ... there were many ways to rpevent it. Parents obviously were not interested enough.

Sorry to pop your sadistic-cynical bubble, but as someone else stated not everyone has the money or the privilege (?) to go through a western education system. This was probably a girl from a rural village who took what she heard on the tv literally and fell into desperation.

I seriously don't find anything comical about this story.

You think she would've waited it out...played the odds. Strange that she would kill herself over something she must not have understood very well. If she had spoken to family members about her fears they surely couldn't have been so, so huge that they went unnoticed by her family. Maybe there was another reason for her actions.

Girls in rural Indian villages have TVs?

I think anyone in India wealthy enough to have even heard about this probably had access to education.

Come on, this story is so preposterous. Some people just like to go around feigning sadness about these kinds of events because they think it makes them look good.

In any case, I didn't have anything to do with the girl's death, so don't try to guilt me into apologizing for thinking this entire thing is ridiculous.

Obviously they don't have tv's, and that's exactly why she heard this voice going around and panicked.
Just goes to show you the impact that the media can have on some people, and in my opinion it's just sad, not only for this girl but for the world in general.

Oh yes, that makes sense. She just drank pesticide so her family could feel sorry for her. We're not talking about retarded bimbos you can see on Sweet Sixteen who would do anything for attention, but apparently that's the type of crowd you are used and accustomed to.

Even if it is the media's fault that this was blown out of proportion, it doesn't mean we can't feel sorry for some poor girl who killed herself over what turned out to be nothing. Many in the media don't care if they cause a tragedy with a story as they get a new story from the tragedy.
And anyway, the LHC doesn't even go full power until the spring of '09. They have to shut it off over the winter so Geneva can use the power too. The media are going to forget about it long before it's actually doing the experiments that they like to lie about.
