Daniela Hantuchova

Dani gets it for her good play in the last 2 events, and for all the articles she's written recently, and now has 2 aces for the AO :yeah:

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/photos/150x200/310577.jpg

Alicia is the clear favourite having won two titles in the lead-up, she always plays well here and her gameplan is very strong, it'll take something special to beat her, Sania has just 1 ace but she's been surprisingly strong on this surface and could make a nice run with a good draw, as for Maria, well she has to be considered as she's the only player with a full set of aces, if she can get her head together, she could win this title.

The Contenders

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/3/global/photos/150x200/130450.jpg

Jennifer has once again produced strong results on this surface, she usually falls short at the end of a tournament but has a very solid game, Daniela has upset several top players with more aces than her, so look for her to do the same here, and whilst Mauresmo has yet to win a match, she has 3 aces and knows what it takes to win a major.

Aces, Points to Defend, POTW and Preview posted :p

I'd like to be able to post results on time each day but one of the things that takes the most time is finding and resizing new pics every week, it really is time consuming and I'd be able to post results quicker if I didn't have to do this :p So could I ask you guys to PM me a pic of your player which will be used all the time, so make it your favourite picture ;) You can change with each surface if you like, but please send as it would be a big help to me, thanks :D

 Molik gets the kiss of death.

Let us see how Dav does when making predictions:

S1
Dav picks for title: -

Contenders: 1 F(USO), 1 SF(AO)

Dark Horses: 1 F(AO), 1 SF(FO)

OK, at the end of last season my aim was to win this tournament. It was the biggest priority of Amelie's Season 3.

After the start Amelie has made now all it can be is hopefully a decent run. I've made some new, original points that I think could do well if I could make it to the latter stages.

It should be a good tournament. I at least hope I can win a match. :tape:

Estonian player Kaia Kanepi debuted successful on the ATC tour stunning 6th seed Kim Clijsters in straight sets,6-3 6-4.

Kanepi just announced her start in the ATC yesterday, today she already goes for the upset.Going for her shots Kanepi beat the struggling sixth seed in convincing fashion in her debut.

"You know,I didn't know what to expect here, as Plexicushion is not my favourite suface and playing a seed is always tough, but as a newbie there was no pressure on me and I played my game throughout the match,I just really noticed what I did when I had 2 Match Points, but an ace saved me the win.My next opponent is Alina Jidkva,as I'm new I don't know much about my opponents,so I just hope to play another good match."

Serena defeats Mauresmo in Melbourne showdown

http://www.williamssisters.org/gallery/albums/serena_archive/ao034.jpg

Melbourne, AUS - The United States of America's Serena Williams played erratic and explosive tennis against France's Amelie Mauresmo, but nevertheless advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The younger Williams sister wilted in intense heat, and wore her heart on her sleeve with an exhausting 6-7 7-5 6-2 win over a tough opponent.

"Yeah, I played good tennis in the third set, but I was all over the place in the beginning of the match," said Williams. The American hit an amazing fifty-four winners in the first two sets, but those shots were offset by sixty unforced errors. "Wow, I'm really surprised to hear those statistics because I've been trying to work on my consistency. It's disappointing, but I'm happy to move on and advance".

In the final set, Serena cleaned up her game and finished with eight unforced errors and thirteen winners. Throughout the match, Williams tried to keep the points short, and came into the net for easy overheads and swinging volleys. "My net game is something that I've been working on. I knew that Amelie would slice her backhand, so I wanted to catch them in the air and put pressure on her. Sometimes, I wanted to finish the volley too soon, and I made errors".

Not only was the American debuting her tennis, she also has a keen eye for fashion. She debuted her Australian Open outfit in her opening round match, and wore the same design against Mauresmo. "Fashion is a part of me, my life. I love what I'm wearing right now. The orange is very summer, and very Melbourne. I'm hoping to wear this on Sunday, with the trophy as an accessory".

Molik Edges into Quarterfinals

http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200701/r123306_399027.jpg

Australian world number one Alicia Molik has survived a tough two set battle with Russia's Elena Dementieva to book herself a spot in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. A two-time defending runnerup at her home event, Molik looked solid and focused during her win.

"I felt really good out there. The first match of a Grand Slam is always really tough but I love playing here in Melbourne and am coming in with so much confidence... Elena is a top player, she gets a lot of balls back really deep and I'm just really happy I could play my game today and come out with the win."

Molik will next face USA's Serena Williams after the American scraped past French fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo 6-7(0) 7-5 6-2.

"Yeah look, I have an incredibly tough draw here and it continued into the quarters with Serena. She is a really tough player and I will certainly have to be on my game tomorrow... With that said, I am the form player on the tour at the moment and am playing the best tennis of my life, so she will certainly have to bring her A-game too... I think it will be a really interesting match."

Kirilenko Impressive En Route to Semifinals
Glamorous Russian into First Slam SF; Sizes Up the Competition (literally!)

http://kirilenko.lawntennisnews.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/r3117680402eaa72hk6.jpg

ATC Headcase Maria Kirilenko has surpassed the expectations of even her most optimistic mental physician by storming into the semifinals of the season's first grand slam event in Melbourne by claiming a 6-4 7-5 victory over the talented Sania Mirza today.

Kirilenko, known on tour as a clay court specialist despite only having one freaking ace on the surface, has at long freaking last put it together on her favored surface. Mirza, for her part, stayed with Kirilenko for most of the match by firing some strong forehands, but Kirilenko showed more mental strength and fight when the going got tough and managed to score the decisive break at 5-4 and 6-5 in each of the sets respectively.

The win over Mirza comes on the heels of soundly defeating tour skank Anastasia Myskina 6-4 6-4 for what seems the 100th time in Kirilenko's storied career. Myskina, who went under a sex change in late 2007 to change from Maria Sanchez Lorenzo to this "new" personality, has reportedly moved to New Orleans in the past month because, as she put it, "I'm the real big easy" :help:

Joining Kirilenko in the Semifinals are newcomer Akiko Morigami, as well as tour veterans Lindsay Davenport and Alicia Molik, who will be meeting in the other Semifinal. Kirilenko has taken time to offer her thoughts on this semifinal -

No contest here, Lindsay is a natural beauty who regularly wins the second most matches on tour by sheer looks. The first being me.

CATEGORY FOUR - Most Likely to Beat an Old Man in an Arm Wrestling Contest
ADVANTAGE - Molik

Molik's plan is definitely the best anyone has ever had, with 4 aces she will be unbeatable :o

:scared: I guess Misa will need to plan her retirement before grass season so she won't embarrass herself.:o

Btw Maria, your gameplan with 2/3 aces would also be really effective against most :yeah:

It's all about clever ace placement people :p

Hi Dav.

I think you are being a tad hasty. ;)

I absolutely cannot believe nobody figured out Molik's plan. Nobody, except Amelie that is.

Had we met, I would've beaten Molik in straight sets. Dav can attest to this.

Amelie is the GOAT.

Yeah you might've beaten Molik but you would've lost to 20 other people in the draw judging by your results lately :o

OK, well you just go hump your runner-up trophy. You will only ever be the bridesmaid sweetie.

And what is our H2H? I have no idea, I just bet I'm leading it.

And I think Serena was just a bad draw for me; yes, my results have been sucking but I made new points especially for Molik. Other people should've realised her strategy too. It is pretty easy to counter. :o

I don't really see how Dav names it the best strategy; it is easy to figure out and easy to beat. I guess it could be labelled the strategy that is the most effective. But not the best.

Lindsay 7-5 6-3

And Liam, you would have beaten Alicia, but you would not have dominated the way she has ;)

No way  Maybe you have figured it out, but it beats 90% of the rest of the field, you literally have to rely on CT to beat her, also you can't just make a gameplan to beat Molik, as you discovered ;)

All I know is this; I figured out her gameplan, made my plan accordingly and I would've won in straight sets.

That was a first attempt...clearly it isn't hard at all to beat her when you put your mind to it.

Finally, Molik Goes The Distance

http://www.tennis.com.au/pages/image.aspx?assetid=RDM39100.6132783565&blobType=portait

In her ninth grand slam, Australia's Alicia Molik has finally gone all the way to win her first Grand Slam. Contesting her third successive Australian Open final, Molik lifted the trophy for the first time following a classic final against Russia's Maria Kirilenko. Molik won 4-6 7-6(6) 7-5 in just under three and a half hours.

"This is incredible! I cannot believe it... I have been in the final twice here before and gone into Wimbledon as one of the favourites in both of the past two years and to finally win my first Slam is so exciting... Comiserations to Maria, she had an incredible tournament; I look forward to seeing her ranking rise into the top five this season."

Molik will now contest the claycourt season. Despite not particularily enjoying the surface, Molik is confident she can score some big wins over the next few weeks.

"You know, clay is not my favourite surface, but I have so much confidence at the moment that anything could happen. I am actually really looking forward to it."
