Welcome to Strasbourg, France - our last stop before the season's second Grand Slam. This is the last opportunity for players to boost their rankings for the seedings - and with the top 16 being seeded in Paris, there will certainly be a fight between the mid-ranked players here this week. Serena ascended to #1 last week - can she cement her position here in Strasbourg? Expect last week's Rome champ Golovin to do well in front of her home crowd.

Defending Champion : Elena Dementieva

SAFINA HOPING TO CONTINUE FORM IN STRASBOURG

Fresh off her maiden OWTT Final appearance Dinara Safina is hoping to continue the form that took her within one victory of her first title at Rome last week. Safina, an original tour member started season one in reasonable touch before a late season form slump which attracted plenty of doubters to her game. Since then she has worked hard and we may be beginning to see the fruits of her labour.

As the tour moves to Strasbourg our intrepid Robshots reporter tracked down the Russian to hear her thoughts on the upcoming tournament, life on the OWTT and all things Safina.

Dinara Safina trains hard in the lead up to Strasbourg Photo- http://www.robshots.com.au

Q: First of all congratulations on making the final in Rome, what does this mean to you?

A: Thankyou very much, it means a great deal and tells me my game is somewhere close to where I want it to be, it has given me belief that I can win that first title I have been wanting so much.

Q: Up until last week you had many critics saying you will never win a title, do you think that will change now?

A: No, they will keep saying it, and I guess it's up to me to prove them wrong, after all I had only made one semi final before last week so I have a lot to prove if I want to be a top contender.

Q: How are you adapting to the rigours of the OWTT?

A: I feel I am slowly getting into the groove and that I can adjust to my ever changing surroundings much better now, this helps me concentrate on my game much more.

Q: Do you have any goals for this season?

A: Well the obvious one is to win a tournament but abov all I want to be consistant and finsih the year in the top ten.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time on the tour?

A: I have recently taken up skateboarding as well as my addiction to all games consoles and playing my guitar.

Q: Who do you see as the main chances in Strasbourg?

A: Hmmm so many! I have to say Tatiana as well as Serena and Elena ..... I have a feeling Alize may go well here but hopefully it's 2nd to me (laughs)

Q:Thanks for your time and good luck

A: No problems and thankyou

Dinara came so close here to taking out the #1 seed. Serena played such a good tie-break though in the decider. Safina has been playing great tennis these last few weeks, and will enter the French Open next week as a huge contender.

Davenport, for the second time this tournament comes out the victor by thanks of a CT going her way. Real tough luck for Kournikova, who like Safina, will go into the French Open as one of the main contenders. Davenport moves on to face #1 seed and compatriot Serena in the final.

(1) S.Williams def. (14) Davenport
7-5 3-6 6-1

Congratulations to Serena, who in her first week as the #1 player, wins her 5th career title, and her 2nd of the season. The CT in the first set was decisive though so she got a little lucky, but Davenport shouldn't be too disappointed having only reached the final courtesy of 2 CT victories earlier on for her. Serena will be a huge favourie for Paris, whilst Linds will be glad to be back to some decent form.

Serena confirms number one spot!

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2005/01/28/sports/28serena.jpg
In her first week as number 1, Serena won her second title of the year

Serena Williams finally achieved the main goal of her OWTT career, being the world number one in the world as she overtook Elena Dementieva, after Rome's tournament. Serena wanted to comeback in a strong way to confirm she deserves this spot and she did it greatly in Strasbourg, her 5th title in career.

In first round she beat Caroline Wozniacki, the Danish, 6-2 0-6 6-2. Serena said about her "She's a good player, but nothing to worry for the top players, I had a mental letdown in the second set and tanked it from 0-3. I don't see her climbing the rankings so much."

In second round she beat the ugly ball basher Ana Ivanovic 7-5 0-6 6-0, After the match, the best player of the world said, "It was all about that first set, she really was trying to hit the hardest she could as she has no all around game, I figured out how to win the first set and messed everything up, I'm glad I bagled her, she looked ridiculous."

In QF she beat her Alizé Cornet 6-0 0-6 7-6(5), after winning Serena said "Alizé has a game that suits well the clay, we were playing pretty much the same way today, we had ups and downs and finally and awesome third set, but I was mentally stronger at the end, the crowd didn't find a way to disturb me. Even though she's an ugly slut, she can play some good tennis."

In SF she overcame the Russian Dinara Safina 6-0 0-6 7-6(5), after this tight battle, the world number said "I'm glad I won, I would have been mad if I would have lost, I had several match points in the final set but wasted them every time. Dinara has some good potential, the ebst opponent I've played in this tournament."

In final she topped her compatriot Lindsay Davenport 7-5 3-6 6-1, an All-American final on clay! The younger American of the two said afterwards "Lindsay played really well, but at the end she was tired phisycally, clay asks a lot to our bodies. I'm glad for her, she had a good week, we are both going to French open with some good sensations."

About being wolrd number 1, Serena said "Elena's reign had to end, and let's face the thruth, nobody else than me had what it takes to be the world number one. I do think I'm the best icon for this tour and I'm the one who attracts the most people, I hope I can stay there for a good part of the season."

How did Patty's new points change the outcome of the tournament? :p
As usual, she goes down 1st round. :help: :p

Because she would have beaten Hantuchova, which had a knock-on effect on the rest of the tournament. Kournikova would have won it.
